This study investigated the effects of the alkaline detergent and acid rinse used for cleaning milking machines on the eight commercially available teatcup liner materials. The sample liners prepared for use in the clean-in-place process were analyzed by ultraviolet spectrophotometer, ion chromatography and liquid chromatography. Among the eight liner materials, the ultraviolet spectra of 3 sample liners were shown to have a similar peak shape after cleaning, but the ultraviolet spectra peak shape of 5 sample liners was noticeably changed. No products were detected by ion chromatography in any of the liner materials used in this study. When the liner materials were only treated with alkaline detergent, some additional peaks were observed using liquid chromatography which indicate the creation of molecular substance and elution from liner materials, however, these peaks disappeared when the liner materials were cleaned with the acid rinse. Therefore, we propose that an acid rinse should be applied, after cleaning the milking machine with the alkaline detergent.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of three modalities commonly used for reduction of oral malodor and to review the contributing factors for halitosis. For this study, 45 subjects of good general health in their third decades were selected, and they were divided into three groups by each modality, that is, tongue scraping, $ZnCl_2$ mouth rinse, and periodontal treatment. Subjective sense of halitosis, diets, Oral hygiene index based on tooth brushing and tongue brushing habit, resting salivary flow rate, gingival index, degree of tongue coating were recored in the Halito-Chart designed by the author. Oral malodor converted from volatile sulfur compound was measured by the Halimeter$^{(R)}$(Interscan Co., USA), and the correlation between the oral factors and pre-treatment halimeter score were analysed. Data obtained were analysed by the SPSS windows program and the results of this study were as follows : 1. There were no significant correlation between oral factors such as oral hygiene index, salivary flow rate, gingival index, degree of tongue coating and pre-treatment halimeter score. 2. Difference between pre- and post-treatment halimeter score by the three modalities were significant, but correlation between pre- and post-treatment score within group was most significant in the periodontal treatment group followed by the tongue scraping group and lowest in the $ZnCl_2$ mouth rinse group. 3. Reduction of halimeter score was significant only in subjects with relatively more tongue coating in the tongue scraping group, but in the $ZnCl_2$ mouth rinse group and in the periodontal treatment group, the modality applied to each group had same significant effects without regard to the degree of oral hygiene index or gingival index. 4. Men had more tongue coating than women, and reduction of halimeter score was significant in men, but not in women.
PURPOSE. This study evaluated the adhesion of 10-MDP containing self-etch and self-adhesive resin cements to dentin with and without the use of etch-and-rinse technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Human third molars (N=180) were randomly divided into 6 groups (n=30 per group). Conventional (Panavia F2.0, Kuraray-PAN) and self-adhesive resin cements (Clearfil SA, Kuraray-CSA) were bonded to dentin surfaces either after application of 3-step etch-and-rinse (35% $H_3PO_4$ + ED Primer) or two-step self-etch adhesive resin (Clearfil SE Bond). Specimens were subjected to shear bond strength test using the universal testing machine (0.5 mm/min). The failure types were analyzed using a stereomicroscope and quality of hybrid layer was observed under a scanning electron microscope. The data (MPa) were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. Overall, PAN adhesive cement showed significantly higher mean bond strength ($12.5{\pm}2.3-14.1{\pm}2.4$ MPa) than CSA cement ($9.3{\pm}1.4-13.9{\pm}1.9$ MPa) (P<.001). Adhesive failures were more frequent in CSA cement groups when used in conjunction with two-step self-adhesive (68%) or no adhesive at all (66%). Hybrid layer quality was inferior in CSA compared to PAN cement in all conditions. CONCLUSION. In clinical situations where bonding to dentin substrate is crucial, both conventional and self-adhesive resin cements based on 10-MDP can benefit from etch-and-rinse technique to achieve better quality of adhesion in the early clinical period.
PURPOSE. This study was undertaken to investigate whether use of an adhesive penetration enhancer, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), improves bond stability of fiber posts to root dentin using two two-step etch-and-rinse resin cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty human maxillary central incisor roots were randomly divided into 4 groups after endodontic treatment and post space preparation, based on the fiber post/cement used with and without DMSO pretreatment. Acid-etched root dentin was treated with 5% DMSO aqueous solution for 60 seconds or with distilled water (control) prior to the application of Excite DSC/Variolink II or One-Step Plus/Duolink for post cementation. After micro-slicing the bonded root dentin, push-out bond strength (P-OBS) test was performed immediately or after 1-year of water storage in each group. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Student's t-test (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. A significant effect of time, DMSO treatment, and treatment${\times}$time interaction were observed (P<.001). DMSO did not affect immediate bonding of the two cements. Aging significantly reduced P-OBS in control groups (P<.001), while in DMSO-treated groups, no difference in P-OBS was observed after aging (P>.05). CONCLUSION. DMSO-wet bonding might be a beneficial method in preserving the stability of resin-dentin bond strength over time when fiber post is cemented with the tested etch-and-rinse adhesive cements.
It was observed that adsorption characteristics of sulfonated fabric ion-exchanger for separating nickel ion from electroplating rinse water. Swelling ratio was increased by increasing degree of sulfonation and polarity of solvent. Ion-exchange capacity was also increased by increasing degree of sulfonation and showed 3.38 meq/g at 16% sulfonated ion-exchanger. There was little effects of pH. Adsorption equilibrium was attained within 10 min, and adsorption rate was 7.5 mg/min. Adsorption capacity was not changed after 7 cycles of regeneration process. Regeneration adsorption capacity was slightly decreased to 2.01 meq/g. It confirmed that durability of sulfonated fabric ion-exchanger was suitable for adsorption process. Adsorption equilibrium time was linearly increased by increasing L/D and adsorption capacity showed the ion exchange capacity within the range of 2.71 ∼ 3.01 meq/g in continuous process. Design of adsorption column could be possible for L/D<2. Under constant L/D condition, there is no little pH effect when rinse water is acidic solution, and operation condition of adsorption process was optimized under pH 5.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible differences in elementary schools jointed to fluoride mouth rinse plans in health centers. Methods : Students from the third to sixth grades filled out the questionnaires. Data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS 12.0. Results : The rate of a personal toothbrush holding and toothbrushing after lunch were higher in those who rinsed their mouths with fluoride than those who did not.(p<0.05). Toothbrushing by the rolling method was more prevailing in the students who rinsed their mouths with fluoride(57.0%) and having regular dental checkup(p<0.05) than in those who did not(39.8%). Conclusions : The students who had rinsed their mouths with fluoride showed the good oral health behavior. Continuing good quality of oral health care education must be provided to the students by professional dental hygienists.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the salivary concentration of Potassium and Magnesium cations and their variation before and after sucrose and glucose rinse, and to investigate the relationship between the levels of each compound. Saliva samples were obtained from 40 subjects before and up to 60 min after intake of a 10% sucrose and glucose solution at 1-month intervals. Potassium and Magnesium in human saliva were determined via anion-exchange chromatography with an anion-suppressed conductivity detector using 12 mM sulfuric acid. The concentrations of Potassium and Magnesium before sucrose rinse were 274.3±77.9 mg/ℓ and 4.5±2.5 mg/ℓ, also, the concentrations of Potassium and Magnesium before glucose rinse were 279.2±62.1 mg/ and 4.8±2.0 mg/ℓ, respectively. Potassium and Magnesium concentrations were significantly decreased (p<0.05) after sucrose rinse. The content of potassium and magnesium in saliva before and after rinsing sucrose and glucose is difficult to standardize or classify, as previous research. The reason for the variation between individuals is large, and easily changed by chemical or physiological stimulation. However, this study was experiment for the purpose of accumulating basic data for saliva.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of catalase used following bleaching for the elimination of hydrogen peroxide residues from human teeth on the microleakage at the tooth-resin composite interface. In this study, class V cavities were prepared on the buccal or lingual surfaces of seventy extracted human molar teeth, and crown of sixty teeth were immersed in 30% hydrogen peroxide at $37^{\circ}C$ for 5 days except for negative control group. Then the teeth were rinsed with water and distributed randomly into seven groups of 10 each and were conditioned as following Negative control group: No bleaching Positive control group : bleaching and no application of catalase (C-40) Experimental group 1 : one cycle of catalase application for 3 min. and water rinse for 2 min. after bleaching Experimental group 2 : two cycles of catalase application for 3 min. and water rinse for 2 min. after bleaching Experimental group 3 : three cycles of catalase application for 3 min. and water rinse for 2 min. after bleaching Experimental group 4 : four cycles of catalase application for 3 min. and water rinse for 2 min. after bleaching Experimental group 5 : five cycles of catalase application for 3 min. and water rinse for 2 min. after bleaching The cavities of each groups were restored with composite resin. The teeth were thermocycled, stained with 2% methylene blue, and sectioned buccolingually. Degree of dye penetration at tooth-restoration interfaces were examined by stereomicroscope(${\times}30$) at occlusal and gingival margin The results were as follows : 1. On the occlusal margin, there was no significant difference in the microleakage between the negative coltrol group and experimental groups (p>0.05). But on the gingival margin, experimental groups showed higher microleakage than the negative coltrol group (p<0.05). 2. On the occlusal margin, positive coltrol group showed higher microleakage than experimental groups (p<0.05) and among the experimental groups, group 1 showed higher microleakage than group 3, 4, 5 (p<0.05). 3. On the gingival margin, there was no significant difference between the positive coltrol group and experimental groups, and between experimental groups (p>0.05). The result indicated that catalase used in bleached cavity for the elimination of hydrogen peroxide residues from human teeth maybe reduced microleakage at the tooth-resin composite interface.
