  • This paper presents the optimal design method of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring for reduced positional uncertainty, and its application to the obstacle detection with improved resolution. Basically, it is assumed that a set of ultrasonic sensors are installed to form a circle at regular intervals with their beams overlapped. First, exploiting the overlapped beam pattern, the positional uncertainty inherent to an ultrasonic sensor is shown to be significantly reduced. Second, for an ideal ultrasonic sensor ring of zero radius, the effective beam width is defined to represent the positional uncertainty, and the optimal number of ultrasonic sensors required for minimal effective beam width is obtained. Third, for an actual ultrasonic sensor ring of nonzero radius, the design index is defined to represent the degree of positional uncertainty, and an optimal design of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring consisting of commercial ultrasonic sensors with low directivity is given. Fourth, given measured distances from ultrasonic sensors, the geometric method is described to compute the obstacle position with reference to the center of a mobile robot. Finally, through experiments using our overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring prototype, the validity and performance of the proposed method is demonstrated.

  • This study investigated via computational analysis the application utility of series-cascaded ring resonators based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) slot optical waveguides in integrated optical biochemical sensors. The radii of the two rings in the series-cascaded ring resonators were 59.4 ㎛ and 77.6 ㎛ respectively, and the coupling distance was 0.5 ㎛. The series-cascaded ring resonators were computationally analyzed using FIMMProp and PICWave numerical software. The free spectral range (FSR), full width at half maximum (FWHM), sensitivity, and quality-factor (Q-factor) of the series-cascaded ring resonators were 12.2 nm, 0.134 nm, 4100 nm/RIU, and 11580, respectively, and the measurement range was calculated to be slightly smaller than 3×10-3 RIU. Although the measurement range was smaller than that of the single ring resonator, upon considering other characteristic parameters, the series-cascaded ring resonators are found to be more effective as integrated sensors than single ring resonators.

  • The trench termination scheme is introduced for high voltage devices. The curvature of the depletion region at field limiting ring is critical factor to determine the breakdown voltage. The smooth curvature of the depletion junction alleviate the electric field crowding effect around this region. In the trench field limiting ring, the radius of the depletion region is smaller than conventional field limiting ring, but the distance between every trench is spaced small enough to punchthrough before initiation of local breakdown. The trench field limiting ring on silicon can ne formed by RIE followed by oxidation on side wall surface of the trench, and polysilicon filling. The combined termination of this trench floating field ring and field plate have been designed and analyzed. The breakdown simulation by 2-dimensional TCAD shows that the cylindrical junction breakdown voltage for substrate doping might be 99 percent of the ideal breakdwon voltage for substrate doping concentration of $3\times10^{14}cm^{-3}$ with about $100{\mu}m$ of lateral termination width.

  • Carlaviruses were isolated from naturally infected medicinal plants, and identified by means of test plants and electron microscopy. Mottle symptoms were shown on leaves of Panax ginseng, Aralia cordata, Xanthium strumarium, Taraxacum officinale, Aconitum carmichaeli, and Bupleurum longiradiatum var. breviradiatum. Ring spot on leaves of Abutilon avicennae and ring mosaic or vein clearing on leaves of Sambucus sieboldiana were also shown. These viruses had rather narrow host ranges by mechanical inoculation. The virus particles were scattered or aggregated in cytoplasm of infected host plant leaves. The carlaviruses for which the name panax virus S (PaVS), aralia virus S (ArVS), xanthium mottle virus (XaVS), taraxacum virus S (TaVS), aconite mottle virus (AcMV), bupleurum virus S (BuVS) and abutilon ring spot virus (AbRSV) were proposed, had flexuous particles with width 13 nm and length $620{\sim}720nm$. A reported elder ring mosaic virus was isolated from leaves of Sambucus sieboldiana with ring mosaic or vein-clear symptoms.

  • In this paper, we proposed a miniaturized Balun-BPF structure using semi-lumped line The conventional Ring Balun-BPF relatively has a big size structure because they consist of two ring resonators, wide line width ring-resonators for low loss and $\lambda/4$transmission line inverters. The ring resonators are miniaturized to 1/4 size by semi-lumped line and we added triangle patches in the ring resonator for compact Balun-BPF structure. The fabricated Balun-BPF is miniaturized to 1/4 size and contains symmetrical output characteristics of balance ports.

  • Ring-width chronologies of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) from two experimental forest plots in Kaunas, Lithuania were developed to study tree growth-climate relationship in different geohydrological conditions using response function analysis. The tree ring-width chronologies of Scots pine ranged from 1883~1987 A.D. and 1864~1989 A.D., and Norway spruce 1838~1987 A.D. and 2870~1989 A.D., respectively. The response function analysis has vividly demonstrated that the growth of Scots pine is favoured by warm summer and Norway spruce by cool and moist summer. Spring temperature has shown direct relationship with tree growth of both the species. There also exists notable intraspecies analogies in growth responses except some minor differences.

  • Electrostatic capacitance measurement method in a fine hose was proposed, in which two ring-type electrodes were disposed on the hose in the direction of fluid flow instead of the conventional face-to-face electrodes. With the proposed electrode structure, we realized a Ringer's solution exhaustion detector for an IV(invasive vein) injection set. On a 4 mm-diameter hose of IV set, we disposed two ring-type electrodes of 10 mm width at a distance of 5 mm each other and obtained 0.72 pF and 2.51 pF for air and 10 % dextrose Ringer's solution in the hose, respectively. The capacitance between the two electrodes varied with the hose-wraparound coverage of electrode as well as the width of electrode and the distance between the electrodes. For hose-wraparound electrode coverage of 75 %, the capacitance varied from 0.62 pF to 1.98 pF with the Ringer's solution level between the two electrodes. A charge amplifier converted the capacitance. variation into electric signal and a comparator was used to detect whether Ringer's solution was exhausted or not. The result was delivered to a host using a RF transmitter with 320 MHz carrier frequency.

  • The effects of external continuous wave optical injection on spectral comb of a 10 GHz harmonically mode-locked semiconductor fiber ring laser have been studied. Greater than 40 dB spectral deeps in the spectral comb and greater than 30 dB reduction of supermode beating noise are achieved by injecting coherent light with ~ 100 KHz spectral width. To examine the possibility of using a low-cost seed source, we replace the seed source by a DFB laser with ~ 10 MHz spectral width. It shows similar spectral deeps, however supermode beating noise enhancement, rather than reduction, is observed.

  • In this paper, the finite element method is applied to investigate the effect of the lateral boundary in homogenous soil on the seismic response of a superstructure. Some influencing factors are presented and discussed, and several parameters are identified to be important for conducting soil-structure interaction experiments on shaking tables. Numerical results show that the cross-section width L, thickness H, wave propagation velocity and lateral boundaries of soil layer have certain influences on the computational accuracy. The dimensionless parameter L/H is the most significant one among the influencing factors. In other words, a greater depth of soil layer near the foundation should be considered in shaking table tests as the thickness of the soil layer increases, which can be regarded as a linear relationship approximately. It is also found that the wave propagation velocity in soil layer affects the numerical accuracy and it is suggested to consider a greater depth of the soil layer as the wave propagation velocity increases. A numerical study on a soil-structure experimental model with a rubber ring surrounding the soil on a shaking table is also conducted. It is found the rubber ring has great effect on the soil-structure interaction experiments on shaking table. The experimental precision can be improved by reasonably choosing the elastic parameter and width of the rubber ring.

  • Tensile load tests were conducted on High-Shear Ring Anchors (HRAs) after shear load had been applied to the HRAs, which had been developed to reduce the number of the anchors. Test variables include the embedment length of the rod and the width of the specimens and a total of 12 specimens were tested. Test results show that the HRAs pulled out due to bond failure or steel failure occurred in case that the HRAs were installed to the members with 300mm or greater width and the embedment length of 160mm (the actual embedment of rod is 140mm) or deeper. Except 4 HRAs showing steel failure of rod, the minimum and average of test-to-prediction by ACI 318-14 ratios are 1.18 and 1.79, respectively. The tensile strength of HRAs, after shear load was applied to the HRAs, can be safely evaluated by the minimum among the concrete breakout strength and bond strength with the actual embedment length of the rod.
