  • This is a fundamental study to develop a sensor to detect weeds in paddy field using machine vision adopted spectralphotometric technique in order to use the sensor to spread herbicide selectively. A set of spectral reflectance data was collected from dry and wet soil and leaves of rice and 6 kinds of weed to select desirable wavelengths to classify soil, rice and weeds. Stepwise variable selection method of discriminant analysis was applied to the data set and wavelengths of 680 and 802 m were selected to distinguish plants (including rice and weeds) from dry and wet soil, respectively. And wavelengths of 580 and 680 nm were selected to classify rice and weeds by the same method. Validity of the wavelengths to distinguish the plants from soil was tested by cross-validation test with built discriminant function to prove that all of soil and plants were classified correctly without any failure. Validity of the wavelengths for classification of rice and weeds was tested by the same method and the test resulted that 98% of rice and 83% of weeds were classified correctly. Feasibility of CCD color camera to detect weeds in paddy field was tested with the spectral reflectance data by the same statistical method as above. Central wavelengths of RGB frame of color camera were tried as tile effective wavelengths to distingush plants from soil and weeds from plants. The trial resulted that 100% and 94% of plants in dry soil and wet soil, respectively, were classified correctly by the central wavelength or R frame only, and 95% of rice and 85% of weeds were classified correctly by the central wavelengths of RGB frames. As a result, it was concluded that CCD color camera has good potential to be used to detect weeds in paddy field.

  • In order to select herbicides which may feasible to water-seeded rice culture, pot trial was initiated to determine phytotoxicity of rice plants to pyrazolate, bensulfuron methyl, chlormethoxynil, and benthiocarb under water-seeded condition. Pyraolate at 300 and 600 g ai/10a did not show crop injury and growth inhibition of rice plants. Bensulfuron methyl at 5.1 g ai/10a and benthiocarb at 210 g ai/10a were relatively safe to water-seeded rice plants when treated at 5 days after seeding. Chlormethoxynil at 210 g ai/10a showed crop injury and growth inhibition of rice plants and thus may not feasible to water-seeded rice culture.

  • Differences in competitive characteristics for mineral nutrition were compared with rice and weeds according to rice planting types like the traditional hand transplanting, machine transplanting of young(10days old) and mature(30days old) seedling, flood direct seeding of germinated seeds and dry direct seeding of dry seeds. There was a slight competition for such nutrients as N, P, K, Ca, and Mg by E. crus-galli and E. kuroguwai in transplanting cultivations. However, nutrient uptake by rice in direct-seedings was severely inhibited throughout the whole growth period by the two weeds including annual weeds such as S. Juncoides and C. difformis. The competition for nutrients at different cultivation types was mainly governed by the dominant weeds.

  • This study was carried out to make the most of them as the fundamental data for reasonable weed control when population of weeds was observed in the alternated fields of lowland and upland. The annual and the perennial paddy weeds in the continuous paddy rice field remarkably decreased when compared to that in the alternated field of paddy rice and soybean. The longer was the duration of upland field condition, the less was the population of lowland weeds and the more was the population of upland weeds. Biennial weeds in the contiuous paddy rice field were less than that in the rotated field of paddy rice and soybean, and this tendency was clear in Alopecurus aequalis Sobol. In the continuous cropping of paddy rice, population of biennial weeds in the culverted field was higher than that in the unculverted one, but in the continuous cropping of soybean this tendency was vice versa.

  • This study was conducted to find the effective management of main weeds including herbicide-resistant Echinochloa oryzicola, Scirpus juncoides and Monochoria vaginalis in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface. The dominant dominances in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface were increased for three years between 2009-2011. In weed distribution in 2011, the occurrence density of S. juncoides decreased greatly, but it of E. oryzicola increased especially as compared with it of 2009. Benzobicyclon, mesotrione and pyrimisulfan were effective to sulfonylurea(SU)-resistant S. juncoides and M. vaginalis at 5 and 12 days after seeding, however, the efficacy of bromobutide to sulfonylurea-resistant M. vaginalis was decreased slightly at 12 days after seeding. And carfentrazon and pyrazolate were ineffective to S. juncoides. In direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface which ACCase and ALS inhibitor-resistant E. oryzicola was not occurred, benzobicyclon+penoxsulam+pyrazosulfuron-ethyl ET, bromobutide+imazosulfuron+metamifop GR, and flucetosulfuron+mesotrione+pretilachlor GR showed the control effect over 94% to main weeds included sulfonylurea-resistant S. juncoides and M. vaginalis. The E. oryzicola dominating in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface were not any affected to the survival by treatment with recommended doses of cyhalofop-butyl and penoxsulam tested. The ACCase and ALS inhibitor-resistant E. oryzicola was effectively controlled by mefenacet and fentrazamide up to the 2nd leaf stage. In direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface domiating coincidentally by herbicide-resistant E. oryzicola, S. juncoides and M. vaginalis, "one-shot herbicide" included with mefenacet, fentrazamide, penoxsulam and metamifop could't be used because of low control effect or rice injury. The sequential treatment of benzobicyclon+thiobencarb SE and bensulfuron+mefenacet+thiobencarb GR controlled effectively the herbicide-resistant E. oryzicola, S. juncoides and M. vaginalis in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface. The days required by the 3rd leaf stage of herbicide-resistant E. oryzicola, S. juncoides and M. vaginalis in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface seeded in May 20 shortened by 4 days as compared with it of June 10.

  • Weed is one of the problems in the crop land as well as in uncultivated land, raising the farm management costs. Therefore, the weed control is essential for effective agricultural management. The cost for weed control in Korea occupies on the average 27.6% of the total labor cost required. Agricultural policies since 1960 were transferring from yield increase due to land productivities to increase of income due to labor productivities. Therefore, the weed control by hand is also changed to weed control by chemicals. The weed control by chemicals has also brought about some side-effects and needs better, improved weed control methods. The present weed control situation and related problems were studied to present new approaches for agricultural development in the future. There were 458 species of weeds in 82 families which were growing in the crop land. The weeds to control, however, are 12 in paddy field and 9 in upland. So far weeds in paddy field are well under control, while weeds in upland are poorly controlled due to change in chemical efficiency and chemical damage in the upland. The administration, research and extension work for the efficient use of agricultural chemicals have been done by various institutions, such as Office of Rural Development, Office of Forestry, and chemical companies. The courses for agricultural chemicals were offered in the agricultural colleges. However, the efficiency of chemicals could not be maximized due to the poor relationships among related institutes. The newly established Agricultural Chemical Research Center at the Office of Rural Development and the Korean Weed Science Association are expected to contribute toward improving weed control in Korea. The Korean agriculture in the future will eventually be mechanized and the varieties resistant to high nitrogen application and to high plant density will be required for high yields. The rice will be transplanted earlier and the whole growing period will be extended. The application of organic matter will be increased for increasing soil fertility, and the use of agricultural chemicals will be continued. Under such a condition, the studies on the weed occurrence and its integrated control measures will be needed. Also weed controls in the newly exclaimed land, crop varieties, horticultural varieties, forage crops, and forests are also needed to study. Basic and practical researches for the weed control to improve the labor productivity will be also needed. In order to meet the all requirements for efficient weed control, weed control systems including all the academics, research and extension workers, administratives, farmers and companies should be established. Also securing researchers and education of personnels are pre-required and research funds for the chemical studies should be provided efficiently and timely.

  • Experiment was conducted to establish the weed control system on the paddy fields by investigating species, period and amount of weeds in Gangwon province. Four locations were selected for these experiments : West plain area, Chunchon(74m above the sea level), mid-mountainous area, Hongchon(300 m), high alpine area, Hoengsong(450m), and east sea area, Myungju(14m). Weed emergence was investigated 6 times from 10 days after transplanting to 60 days with 10 days interval. From the experiments stated above, the results were summarized as follows ; The identity of weed species was small in grass family, but broad-leaf family was numerous. Also the dominant weed species was generally the perenial weeds. The weed emergence was initiated from 10 days after translanting. The amounts of weed counted the most in Chunchon. A large number of weeds were emerged between 30-60 days after transplanting in Chunchon and between 40-60 days after transplanting in Hongchon and Hoengsong. Among agronomic characteristics affected by weed emergence during rice development, plant height was decreased by 2~4cm, panicle number by 1.3~2.9, spikelet by 3.7~7.5, ripening rates 3.3~6.5%, and milled yield by 12~17%, respectively.

  • This paper provides the current status of weed science and prospects for the development of weed science based on the research trends presented at the 26th Asian Pacific Weed Science Conference in 2017. Approximately 458 researchers from 25 countries, including Korea, participated in the conference and presented 325 papers in 20 research areas. Major research topics were herbicide resistance, herbicide use, herbicide development, weed ecology, allelopathy, weed management, and exotic weeds. Particularly, there were many presentations and interesting to researchers about the development and use of new herbicides, such as florpyauxifen-benzyl ester, triafamone, fenquinotrione, and tolpyralate. Development of new herbicide formulations and spray methods were suggested as a solution for the population decline in rural area and low labor quality especially in Asia and Pacific regions. In future weedy rice and exotic weeds will be a serious problem in this area so we need to cooperate to make good technical and practical solutions.

  • In order to determine selective mode of action of naproanilide between rice and paddy weeds, absorption and translocation of $^{14}C$-naproanilide in rice, Echinochloa crus galli, Cyperus serotinus, and Sagittaria pygmaea were studied, Rice plant and Echinochloa crus-galli absorbed less amount of $^{14}C$-naproanilide than Sagittaria pygmaeo and Cyperus serotinus. Less amount of $^{14}C$-naproanilide was translocated into shoots and translocation rate was slower in rice and Ecl:inochloa crzis-galli than that of Sagittaria pygmaea and Cyperars serotinus. Also, 30-40% of $^{14}C$-naproanilide was distributed at tubers of Sagittaria pygmaea and Cyperus serotinus, which explained that higher amount of $^{14}C$-naproanilide was absorbed from tubers. $^{14}C$-naproanilide was gradually decreased in all plant species and finally more radioactivity was determined in Sagittaria pygmaea and Cyperus serotinus than in Echinochloa cars-galli and rice plant after $^{14}C$-naproanilide treated plants were transferred to Kasugai solution.
