  • The rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) established from the shattered grains by combine harvesting at the previous year showed great variations of yield and yield components from site to site at the abandoned rice crop field. The cultural condition was very similar to direct seeding under no-tillage system but no cultural practices such as application of fertilizer, weed control, irrigation and drainage had been carried out. The highest yield of 188kg/10a was observed at one of the quadrats randomly located on the field, which showed the possibility of exploitation of no-tillage system. The interrelationship between crop growth and coverage of weed species was measured by calculating the correlation coefficients. The investigations of how to establish sufficient number of seedlings per unit area, plant succession on the abandoned crop field, crop mixture with legume crops, and breeding appropriate plant type of rice for the enhancement of competitive ability would be required for the success of no-tillage system.

  • Fallow paddy areas have been increased due to the import of cheap agricultural product, and the unbalance between farming cost and rice price since 1990. In domestic, rice production control that decrease paddy field area has been introduced for the control of rice demand and supply and stabilization of rice price since 2003. Because of the desire of paddy field's owner to create benefit by using paddy for other object, fallow paddy would be continuously increased. In the other aspect, many people in the world is suffering from hunger because of the shortage of food. In case of Korea, continuous drought and flood damages will be potential concern of stable food supply. From this viewpoint, the increasing fallow paddy area needs to be protected from the devastation by weed breeding for the re-cultivation. In this study, fallow paddy managed with the shallow pools and shallows was selected fur monitoring and analyzing of water quality and plant body change. As the results, the managed fallow paddy found to be effective in the purification of water quality and the control of plant growth.

  • This study was conducted to investigate changes in weed occurrence and dominance as affected by seeding dates in water seeded rice paddy under field following two years of no-tillage condition. The pre-emergence weeds in no-tillage paddy were controlled by glyphosate application at 7 days before seeding. The rice seeds were seeded on April 20, May 10 and May 30, respectively with 40kg/ha of seeding rate. The weed species in the paddy occurred included three species (Echinochloa cursgalli, Aneilma keisak, Ottelia alismoides) of annual weed, one species (Alopecurus aequalis) of biennial weed and five species (Eleocharis kuroguwai, Leersia japonica, Sagittaria pygmaea, Sagittaria trifolia, Potamogeton distinctus) of perennial weed respectively. Aneilma keisak was found to be dorminant on April 20 and May 10 but Eleocharis kuroguwai on May 30 based on number of weeds. The number and dry weight of weeds occurred were higher on May 10 as compared to in other seeding dates, while proportion of perennial weeds increased as the seeding date was delayed. In particular, weed dorminance varied marketly with seeding date. The Simpson's indices were 0.736 on April 20, 0.261 on May 10 and 0.281 on May 30, respectively.

  • Photosynthetic activity of two rice varieties "Suweon 318, Nagdongbyeo" and two species of grass weeds, two species of sedge weeds, and four species of broadleaf weeds was measured at 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 Klux light intensity. Relative photosynthetic activity of weed species was high in the decreasing order in Cyperus serotinus, Echinochloa grusgalli var caudata, Bidens tripartita, Monochoria vaginalis, and Ludwigia prostrata, while respiration rate was high in Bidens tripartite, Monochoria vaginalis and Cyperus serotinus. Light saturation point of Monochoria vaginalis and Sagittaria pygrnaea may be considered as at 30 klux and photosynthetic rate of other weed species increased with increasing light intensity. Photosynthetic activity of weed species was generally two times higher than rice at the light intensity of 50 klux and increased more than rice as light intensity increased. Photosynthetic activity per leaf dry weight and specific leaf area was higher in broadleaf weeds than in grass and sedge weed species.

  • This study was conducted to find the levels of reduction in rice yield and to determine economic threshold levels as affected by densities of Scirpus planiculmis and Lindernia dubia in wet seeding rice cultivation. In wet seeding rice cultivation, yield of rice in densities of S. planiculmis (192 per $m^2$) and L. dubia (384 per $m^2$) was reduced by 43 and 22%, respectively. Relationship between rice yield and densities of weeds were predicted with these equations of Y=531.3kg/(1+0.003931x), $r^2$=0.964 for S. planiculmis and Y=547.0kg/(1+0.000792x), $r^2$=0.922 for L. dubia. According to Cousens' method, economic threshold densities of S. planiculmis and L. dubia were calculated by 7.2 and 34.9 per $m^2$, respectively. This result indicated that yield of rice in wet seeding rice cultivation could be reduced by over economic threshold densities of S. planiculmis and L. dubia.

  • This experiment was conducted at National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station in 1995 to identify effects of early flooding in dry seeded rice on rice growth and weed occurrence. The early flooding of emergence date and the 2-leaf stage were not differed significantly on seedling stand, seedling growth of rice and plant characteristics associated with lodging compared to flooding of the 4-leaf stage. However, weed occurrence resulted in 39-61% suppression. Most predominant weed regardless of flooding times was Echinochloa crus-galli, followed by Aneilema japonicum. The Aneilema japonicum, in general, was higher occurrence with earlier flooding, while dry land weeds such as Digitaria sanguinalis, Stellaria alsine etc. reduced. Grain yield of early flooding at emergence date and the 2-leaf stage was higher by 2-5% than that of the 4-leaf stage due to better grain filling ratio and heavier 1,000 grain weight.

  • In order to determine the possibility of reducing rice injury caused by CNP and butachlor application, the effects of IAA seed presoaking on CNP and butachlor action against early growth of rice seedlings were investigated under flooded direct-seeding and dry-seeded conditions. CNP and butachlor injury to rice was reduced by soaking rice seeds at 0.1, 1.0 and 10ppm of IAA solution for 36 hours before seeding under flooded condition and thus shoot length and dry weight of rice seedlings increased compared with those of IAA untreated seedlings. IAA seed pretreatment also overcame the inhibitory effect of CNP and butachlor under dry-seeded condition. Effect on reducing rice injury by IAA pretreatment was more remarkable when CNP applied under dry seeded condition and butachlor under flooded condition.

  • Three hundred rice(Oryza sativa L.) cultivars were screened for tolerance to butachlor [N-(buthoxymethyl)-2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl) acetamide], thiobencarb(S-[(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]diethylcarbamothioate), and simetryn [N,N-diethyl-6-(methylthio)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine]. The responses of the rice cultivars to herbicides differed depending upon the herbicides and their concentrations. New Sabarmati(BAS), Gora, PTB 18 were tolerant to butachlor, and Azucena, IR44707-31-1-3-2, ARC 7293 to thiobencarb, while Gora, ARC 7293, and Dudmona were tolerant to both herbicides. Response of rice to simetryn differed from its response to butachlor and thiobencarb. Inhibition of shoot growth and fresh weight increased as the temperature and herbicide concentration increased. There was a higher correlation among rice cultivars response to butachlor and thiobencarb in the greenhouse when laboratory studies were conducted at higher temperatures.

  • Nutrient culture study was initiated to examine the selectivity of dithiopyr(S, S-dimethyl 2-difluoromethyl)-4-(2-methylpropyl)-6-(trifluoro methyl)-3, 5-pyridine dicarbothiate) in rice(Oryza sativa L.) and barnyardgrass(Echinochloa crusgalli Beauv.). Absorption and translocation of $^{14}C$-dithiopyr in rice and barnyardgrass were also investigated to determine their selective mechanism. Rice was very tolerant, but barnyardgrass was susceptible to dithiopyr. The absorption of dithiopyr was greater in barnyardgrass than in rice and most of them remained in the roots of both species. Dithiopyr was absorbed by roots and basal shoots of both species. Translocation of dithiopyr was very low but was higher in barnyardgrass than in rice. Therefore, this study suggest that the selectivity of dithiopyr between rice and barnyardgrass may be mainly attributed to the absorption and translocation of dithiopyr in plants.

  • Factors affecting phytotoxicity of dithiopyr in rice such as transplanting depth, seedling age, soil texure were examined and mechanism of phytotoxicity in rice was also determined by absorption study of $^{14}C$-dithiopyr in rice seedlings under above conditions. Rice injury was occurred in shallow transplanting depth, young rice seedlings and sandy soil conditions. Higher amount of dithiopyr was absorbed in rice at shallow transplanting depth and sandy soil conditions which may related to phytotoxicity of dithiopyr.
