  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum intervals of shelves and seed-tray layout in container for raising rice seedlings at automatic facility. The seedling characteristics were evaluated with 10-day to 20-day old seedling grown under the different intervals of nursery shelves and seed-tray arrangement in the containers. The plant height was increased as the shelf intervals in nursery containers from 17 cm to 23 cm. The difference in plant height was larger in seedlings seeded at May 10 than those at June 10 and in 20-day old seedlings as compared with 10-day old seedlings. The growth characteristics of seedlings was significantly varied with the layout intervals of nursery tray on the containers. The seedling height was shorter as the extension of layout intervals of the tray on the shelf of nursery containers, but the seedling quality was increased in the seedling which grown on the trays arranged at 3 to 5 cm intervals. The light intensity was remarkably different from the position of nursery tray in the container. The illumination intensity was the highest on the uppermost tray. However the seedling height was shorter as the raising of tray position from the lowest shelf to the highest it in nursery container. The best results based on the seedling characteristics was obtained from the seedlings which grown in the tray arranged at 3 cm interval on the ten-shelf container with 20 cm intervals.

  • To establish a cultivation system of Sedum sarmentosum using a rice nursery tray ($30{\times}60{\times}3\;cm$) in non-heating plastic film house, cuttings of two local strains (Wanju and Keumsan) were prepared and planted at different planting densities (40, 60 and 80 cuttings per tray) on September 7th, and subsequent growth and yield at pre- and post-winter season were investigated. When pre-wintering growth were measured at 60 days after planting, high planting density (80 cuttings/tray) decreased leaf length and lateral shoot number per plant compared to 40 cuttings/tray. When post-wintering growth were measured on April 20th, no significant growth differences as affected by planting density were observed in Keumsan strain, while decreased stem diameter, node number and leaf number were observed in Wanju strain planted at 80 cuttings/tray compared to 40 cuttings/tray. Fresh and dry weights were not significantly different as affected by planting density, but those were significantly increased in Wanju strain compared to Keumsan strain. When regrowth characteristics followed by the first harvest were measured on June 5th, significantly increased stem number was observed at 80 cuttings/tray compared to 40 cuttings/ tray. Fresh and dry weight were significantly increased in Keumsan strain planted at 80 cuttings/tray compared to 40 cuttings/tray, and dry weight were increased in Wanju strain compared to Keumsan strain. Wanju strain showed higher shoot yield, thicker stem, shorter node and larger leaf, and non-succulent stem under high planting density compared to Keumsan strain. Accordingly, the optimum density was 40 cuttings per tray, and Wanju strain was adequate for the cultivation system using a rice nursery tray.

  • This study was carried out to develop a seedling raising method without nursery soils in automatic raising facility of rice seedlings for machine transplanting. Pre-germinated seeds were sowed on the seed trays with three different seats such as paper seat, corrugated board, and polyethylene film instead of nursery soils. The growth characteristics of the seedlings for 20 days after sowing were compared with that of a conventional standard raising method with nursery soils. There was no difference in plant height of 10-day old seedlings among the different nursery methods, but the plant height of seedlings grown for 15 days after sowing in the trays with fivefold newspaper and nursery soils was significantly taller than those on other nursery conditions. Dry weight of seedlings grown in the tray with fivefold newspaper bottom was heavier than those in nursery trays with a corrugated board and a piece of polyethylene film. The seedlings grown in a nursery tray with fivefold newspaper showed better seedling quality and root-mat formation compared with the other nursery trays. This result suggests that the healthy seedlings for machine transplanting can be raised in the paper-sheet tray without nursery soils. The labour hours and cost required for the soil-free method using paper was reduced by about 49.3% and 26.6%, respectively, compared with the semi-adult seedling on nursery soils.

  • In comparison of physicochemical properties between expanded rice hulls (ERH) and a commercial nursery soil (Bunong), the pH and content of organic matters were higher in ERH than those of Bunong soil. However, the content of available phosphate, $\textrm{NH}_4\textrm{-N}$ and $\textrm{NO}_3\textrm{-N}$ were lower in ERH as compared with Bunong soil. The growth characteristics of seedlings were evaluated for 15-day old seedlings grown in five different nursery soils including ERH. The plant height was the tallest (22.8cm) in Bunong soil and shortest (12.8cm) in ERH. There was no difference in number of leaves among five types of nursery soils. The best results based on the seedling quality and root intensity was obtained from the seedlings grown in the nursery soil which ERH was used for bedding and Bunong soil for covering in the seed tray. The weight of a seed tray with Bunong soils was 27% heavier than that of 'ERH + Bunong soil'.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of nursery soils and seeding density on seedling growth characteristics in automatic facility for raising of rice seedlings. The seedling characteristics were evaluated for the 10-day and 15-day old seedlings grown in six different nursery soils including farm-made soils. Two levels of seeding amount, 250 g and 300 g/tray ($60{\times}30{\times}2.5$ cm), were applied to compare the seedling characteristics according to seeding density on different nursery soils. There were wide difference in soil components among the nursery soils tested. In acidity of nursery soils, 'Bunoog 2' was the highest, pH 5.1, and 'Samkyung' was the lowest, pH 8.6. The content of available phosphate was the highest value, 843 ppm, in 'Bunong 1' and the lowest (74 ppm) in farm-made soils. The total nitrogen content of 'Bunong 1, 2, 3' and 'Weonjo' soils was higher than there of 'Samkyung' and farm-made soils. There was no difference in plant height among three types of 'Bunong' soils (Bunong 1, 2, 3), but the seedling height grown in farm-made soils was shorter than there in other nursery soils. The plant heigh was slightly taller as the increase of seeding amount from 250 g to 300 g/tray, and the difference in plant height was larger in 15-day old seedlings as compared with 10-day old seedlings. Dry weight of seedlings grown for 15 days in three 'Bunong' soils was heavier than those in other nursery soils. Based on the growing characteristics of seedlings grown in different nursery soils, the heat result was obtained from a nursery soil, 'Bunoog 2', among six marketing nursery soils tested.

  • The newly developed fertilizer is the slow-releasing fertilizer which can be used as a basal fertilizer without no additional fertilization at tillering stage. It has 30-4-6% of $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ and was coated with mixture of LDPE (Low density polyethylene), EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate), BDP (Bio degraded polymer), TALC and nonionic surfactant for the controlled release up to 50 days after application. Coating materials were designed to be decomposed naturally. This fertilizer can be applied directly to the seedling tray mechanically just before transplanting, resulting in significant labor saving effect. The developed slow-release fertilizer, which can replace both basal fertilization and top dressing at tillering stage by single application directly to seedling tray, showed the highest release at 14~21 days after transplanting. Considering the plant growth at different growth stages and yield, the optimal application rate of developed slow-release fertilizer was 300 g per rice nursery tray and the yield of rice at this application rate was 5.25 MT/ha. Rice quality in terms of head rice grain ratio, amylose content, whiteness, and taste value decreased as fertilization rate increased from 200 g to 500 g per nursery tray. Fertilization rate based on quantity of fertilizer ingredients (N, P, K) was reduced by 49.3% compared to the standard application rate and there was 49.2% reduction in labor input for fertilization.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the effects of diatomearth(pH 3 and CEC 20me/100g) on the adjustment of nursery soil pH and on the growth of rice seedling in the tray. The results are as follows ; 1. The soil pH and damping-off of rice seedling were decreased with increase in diatomearth application. 2. Ten to fifteen percent of diatomearth was required to adjuse the optimum soil pH range of 4.5-5.5. 3. Changes in nursery soil pH adjusted by diatomearth were less than those by sulfuric acid during the incubation period. 4. Diatomearth application increased dry weight and height of rice seedling.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the availability of covering material used for raising seedlings in the rice nursery bed. The pre-germinated seeds of a rice cultivar 'Chilbo' were sown into seedling tray ($60{\times}30{\times}2.5cm$) on 20th April and 3rd May 2010. Polypropylene spunbonded fabric (PSF) and lagging were used for covering materials in rice nursery bed. The growth characteristics of seedlings were evaluated at 8, 15 and 25 days after sowing (DAS) in the nursery beds covered with PSF and lagging, respectively. The plant height of 8-day old seedlings grown in lagging nursery bed was longer by 2cm than those in PSF nursery bed when the seeds were sown on 20th April, but seedling quality grown in lagging nursery bed was poor compared with that in PSF nursery bed. The growth characteristics of 15-day old seedlings were similar to that of 8-day old seedlings. The plant height of 8, 15 and 25-day old seedlings grown in lagging nursery was longer than those in PSF nursery when the seeds were sown on 3rd May. The seedling quality grown in PSF nursery was better than that in lagging nursery. The seedlings grown in PSF nursery have more leaves and better seedling quality compared with that of lagging nursery. The seedling quality was remarkably decreased with the increase of nursery period in lagging bed but seedlings quality were recovered at 5 days after hardening treatment by removing the lagging.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of rice double cropping in Korea by assessing the growth and yield performance of rice cultivars transplanted at the extremely-early date. When the transplanted rice seedling was exposed to low temperature below 0℃, the survival rate decreased drastically. However, short exposure to below 0℃ one or two times did not damage transplanted rice seedling so severely. Thus, the earliest transplanting in spring would be possible when minimum temperature rises above 0℃. Compared with the conventional seedling nursery tray (CSNT), seedling rearing with the potted nursery tray was more effective for increasing leaf age and seedling dry weight during nursery period. In the first rice cropping, rice cultivation with seedlings reared in PSNT showed shorter growth duration and cumulative temperature from transplanting to heading than that with seedlings reared in CSNT. The earliest heading date on July 4 in Jinbuolbyeo was earlier by two to three days than that of Dunaebyeo. If rice has not exposed to cold damage, the earliest heading date of Jinbujolbyeo can advance to June 30 or July 1. In this case, rice harvest would be possible on August 5, enabling the rice transplanting of the second rice cropping before August 10. At transplanting time with low temperature damage rice yield were less than 400 kg/10a while rice yield exceeded 400 kg/10a at transplanting time without low temperature damage.

  • The duration of raising seedling of infant rice seedling(IRS) in machine transplanting is 8 to 10 days. This experiment was conducted to investigate the minimum duration of IRS's raising seedling and its method by the combination of several treatments such as plant growth regulator, root-break-seat and temperature. The rice seeds of Hwaseongbyeo was soaked in the solution of metalaxyl for 24 hours at room temperature. Metalaxyl (25% wettable powder), a fungicide, was used in 1, 000 times dilution as a promting substance on the root-mat formation of IRS. The application of fungicide in the nursery soil for the controlling of damping-off and physiologyical seedling rot was omitted due to the metalaxyl seed-soaking treatment. Seeding rate was 220g per seed tray (30$\times$60$\times$3cm). To promote the root-mat formation of IRS, the sheets of polyethylene vinyl and absorptive paper were placed bottom the seed tray. The root-mat formation of IRS was promoted at higher temperature and longer duration of raising seedling. The metalaxyl-treated seeds markedly increased the root length and rooting activity of IRS as compared with the control, thus the root-mat formation was excellent. The absorptive paper with polyethylene vinyl as root-break-seat showed a better root-mat formation compared with control, polyethylene vinyl, alone. The minimum duration of raising seedling of IRS was 5 days after sowing based on the root-mat formation and seedling height under the condition of metalaxyl seed treatment, absorptive paper with polyethylene vinyl as a root-break-seat and the raising seedling temperature 30/2$0^{\circ}C$ (day /night).
