  • The improvement of stiffness by the increase of thickness of deck plate or the reinforcement of longitudinal rib is one method among the effective methods to control fatigue damages occurring in orthotropic steel deck. It is likely that the increase of stiffness is effective to restrain local deformation caused by axial load in the steel deck. Therefore, in this study, the parameter studies for the reinforced structural details such as the bulk-head plate and vertical rib which is established to reduce the resultant stresses in the connection parts of the longitudinal rib and floor beam were performed with FE analysis. From the results, it was known that the reinforced structural detail with the bulk-head plate in the longitudinal ribs reduced overall the principal stresses at the connection parts, but the stress concentration increased in the weld toe parts which are occurring fatigue cracks. Also, it was estimated that the reinforced structural detail with the vortical rib in the longitudinal ribs because of the reduction of stress concentration in the weld toe parts is more effective details than the bulk-head plate.

  • Charts for the bending moments in the closed rib orthotropic deck plate are derived, based on the method originally introduced by Pelikan and Esslinger. New charts are done for EN 1991-2 traffic load distribution schemes. The governing Huber plate equation is solved utilizing Fourier series for various bridge deck plate boundary conditions. Bending moments are given as a function of deck plate rigidities and span length between cross beams. Old diagrams according to DIN 1072, the new ones according to EN 1991-2 and FE analyses results are compared. For typical bridge orthotropic deck plates, it can be concluded that the new EN 1991-2 traffic loads produce larger mid-span bending moments when two lane schemes are used, then those of DIN 1072. For support moments, DIN 1072 gives larger values for any number of lanes, especially under span lengths of 5m. The relevant differences are up to 25%.

  • The surface roughness and heat transfer enhancement devices are known to increase the performance of a flat plate soar collector. This study includes the experiments on the effect of the several heat transfer enhancement devices inserted in duct to simulate the flat-plate solar collector. Experiment was basically at a constant heat flux on the upper duct wall. Inserted heat transfer enhancement devices are Chamfered rib $10^{\circ}$, Chamfered rib $20^{\circ}$, Rib & Groove and Rib & Dimple. Reynolds number is in the range of 2,300 to 22,000 which corresponds to turbulent regime. With the heat transfer enhancement devices, heat transfer would increase by the secondary flow and the increase of the heat transfer area. Pressure drop also increases with the insertion of the enhancement devices. Rib & Dimple model is the best in heat transfer enhancement, however, Chamfered rib $10^{\circ}$ model is the lowest in the pressure drop. Considering the heat transfer enhancement simultaneously with low pressure drop increase, performance factor was the best for the Chamfered rib $10^{\circ}$.

  • This study consists of static and fatigue tests to evaluate the behavior on the field splice joint of longitudinal rib in orthotropic steel deck specimens. Specifically, static and influence surface tests are performed for the stress distribution at the scallop area and high-strength bolt connection of longitudinal rib to examine the existence of handhole cover plate and the effect of eccentric loads. The ultimate strength of the field splice joint of longitudinal rib is obtained. In fatigue tests, cracks are observed at the scallop in the lower level test and the catastrophic failure of longitudinal rib is occurred following the failure of handhole cover plate in the higher level test. This study gives a basis for the better understanding of the field splice joint of longitudinal rib.

  • The ㄱ type perfobond rib shear connector is a ㄱ type flat steel plate with a number of holes punched through. This connector can be effectively used in girder with high shear. The ㄱ type perfobond rib shear connector exhibit very stiff behaviour under service load conditions and also had the characteristic of retaining a significant amount of load after the attainment of ultimate capacity. A regression analysis, which is based on a model that takes into account the contributions of concrete dowels formed by the rib holes, the transverse reinforcement, the strength of concrete in front of the rib, and the ㄱ type plate as well as a nonlinear finite element analysis, is used in the derivation. An empirical equation for the design of ㄱ type perfobond rib shear connector is proposed.

  • Static and fatigue tests were performed to evaluate fatigue strength in scallop at field bolted joints of longitudinal rib and deck plate in orthotropic steel decks. Numerical parametric studies using finite elemtn analysis were also conducted to show the influence of parameters such as length and radius of scallop, and thickness of deckplate on the stress concentration at the scallop. In the low stress level, fatigue tests yielded cracks at the scallop while in the high stress level, catastrophic failure of longitudinal rib occurred following the failure of handhole cover plate. Fatigue strength was compared with JSSC specification and the predicted S-N curves using Shigley and Juvinall methods, and a satisfactory result was obtatined.

  • With the adoption of welded joints rather than bolted joints, we investigate the fatigue strength and the fatigue crack initiation of U-type trough rib and welded specimen with misalignment in a steel deck plate. The stress concentration factor of welded specimens with a misalignment is also verified by a finite element method. The main conclusions obtained from this study are as follows Experimental results of full-scaled U-type trough rib models have indicated that fatigue life depends on misalignments of welded joints in steel deck plate ; The more misalignments are, the less the fatigue life is. It has also shown that fatigue crack propagates from the welded root to the bead surface. We have also obtained the same results from both the fatigue test of welded specimens with a misalignment and the stress analysis of a finite element method.

  • The present study is conducted to investigate the effect of rib arrangements on an impingement/effusion cooling system with initial crossflow. To simulate the impingement/effusion cooling system, two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of tile hole diameter. Initial crossflow passes between the injection and effusion plates, and the square ribs (3mm) are installed on the effusion plate. Both the injection and effusion hole diameters are 10mmand Reynolds number based on the hole diameter and hole-to-hole pitch are fixed to 10,000 and 6 times of the hole diameter, respectively. To investigate the effects of rib arrangements, various rib arrangements, such as 90$^{\circ}$transverse and 45$^{\circ}$angled rib arrangements, are used. Also, the effects of flow rate ratio of crossflow to impinging jets are investigated. With the initial crossflow, locally low transfer regions are formed because the wall jets are swept away, and level of heat transfer rate get decreased with increasing flow rate of crossflow. When the ribs are installed on the effusion plate, the local distributions of heat/mass transfer coefficients around the effusion holes are changed. The local heat/mass transfer around the stagnation regions and the effusion holes are affected by the rib positions, angle of attack and rib spacing. For low blowing ratio, the ribs have adverse effects on heat/mass transfer, but for higher blowing ratios, higher and more uniform heat transfer coefficient distributions are obtained than the case without ribs because the ribs prevent the wall jets from being swept away by the crossflow and increase local turbulence of the flow near the surface. Average heat transfer coefficients with rib turbulators are approximately 10% higher than that without ribs, and the higher values are obtained with small pitch of ribs. However, the attack angle of the rib has little influence on the average heat/mass transfer.

  • In steel deck bridges suffering directly on wheel load according to the number of serviced years, the occurrence of fatigue cracks increases in structural details, which includes the cross section parts of the longitudinal rib and transversal rib, and so on. Through the control method for these fatigue cracks the increased thickness of the steel deck plate or the application of retrofit detail to the inside of the longitudinal rib was observed to be effective. This study suggests structural details for the retrofitted and non-retrofitted longitudinal rib. The target details in this study are the connection parts of the lo ngitudinal and transversal rib, and the slit parts of transverse rib where fatigue cracks were frequently reported in previous studies. In the analyses, detailed structural analyses were performed as parameters, which include the shape, change of size and attached position. From the results the stress reduction in the target details was observed to be larger in the retroffited details. Also, the improvement of fatigue strength is more effective in the retrofitted details with the vertical rib than the bulkhead plate.

  • Transverse rib web of orthotropic steel decks is highly susceptible to stress concentration due to out-of-plane and oil canning deformation caused by longitudinal rib distortion. In particular, stress concentrations are observed in the crossing point of longitudinal rib-transverse rib-deck plate, and cutout parts of transverse rib. The main objective of this study is to improve structure performance and to reduce the stress concentration of aforementioned susceptible parts. It is known that the installation of diaphragm alleviates stress concentrations between crossing point ant cutout. The influence of transverse rib placement and cutout width on stress concentrations was thoroughly investigated through numerical analyses. The numerical result showed that diaphragms produce the structural details for improved structure performance, when the transverse rib was placed in the same location with diaphragms. In any case, it is certain that the installation of diaphragms has more advantageous than the case without diaphragms in terms of structure performance of orthotropic steel decks. In this study, the distance ratio($y_i/y_{total}$) is defined as the ratio of the distance($y_{total}$) between the deck plate and longitudinal rib bottom to the distance($y_i$) between the deck plate and crossing point of longitudinal rib-transverse rib in cutout part. It has been found that the optimal distance ratio was 0.85 from the numerical simulation.
