  • This paper attempts to demonstrate how the linguistic and mythological features of the shamanic language make it incantatory, or ′enchanting′. Passages used in shamanic rites manifest linguistic characteristics that point to their own norms and conventions, as well as some mythological features that contribute to the undecipherablity of the shamanic language. Focusing on the estranged linguistic and mythological features, I propose that shamanic languages can be best interpreted in terms of the linguistic hierarchization, a notion that has been developed since Roman Jakobson′s poetics. The present study adopts Eisele′s framework that reinterprets Jakobsonian hierarchization into a slightly revised notion on the basis of the "degree of combinatorial freedom" and the "degree of semantic immediacy", looking into a set of paradigm examples in search of some parallel structures characterizing the shamanic language. The enchanting effect of this peculiar form of language, it is argued, is due mostly to the frequent use of lexical parallelism, which works in the reverse direction of the normal process of interpretation.

  • The cytoplasmic domain of syndecan-4, a type I transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan, was overexpressed as a fused form with the ubiquitin molecule in Escherichia coli, and the fusion protein was purified using immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC). The cytoplasmic domain was released from its fusion partner by using yeast ubiquitin hydrolase (YUH), and subsequently purified by reverse phase chromatography. The integrity of the resulting peptide fragment was checked by MALDI-TOF and NMR spectroscopy. The yield of the peptide was 3.0-1.5 mg per liter in LB or minimal medium, respectively. The recombinant expression and purification of this domain will enable us its structural and functional studies using multidimensional NMR spectroscopy.

  • Both ground and space telescopes are being built larger and larger. Accordingly, the secondary mirrors become larger which are convex mostly on the surface form. Testing convex mirrors becomes more difficult and delicate than testing concave mirrors in optics, because additional optical components are needed to make the reflected rays converge. Hindle type tests are frequently used for measuring the surface deforms of convex mirrors, which employs a meniscus lens to reverse the diverted rays from the mirrors. In case of testing large convex mirrors by using Hindle type tests, attention would be needed as larger meniscus lens is required. A method of modified Hindle test has been studied and the characteristics are analyzed. In this paper, current method of testing convex mirrors is presented, and a new method is discussed.

  • A new soft recovery pulse width modulation quasi resonant converter composed only passive devices snubber network is proposed. This passive devices snubber network is revised form of folding snubber network that suppressed the reverse recovery current of main rectify diode in PWM converter. It also makes the MOSFET switching devices operate in soft state. The efficient of the proposed converter is almost same level to that of the converter of active snubber type. The overall circuit is simple and easy to realized. Therefore, it is suitable to apply to middle range output power source.

  • A novel non-isolated bidirectional soft-switching SEPIC/ZETA converter with reduced ripple currents is proposed and characterized in this study. Two auxiliary switches and an inductor are added to the original bidirectional SEPIC/ZETA components to form a new direct power delivery path between input and output. The proposed converter can be operated in the forward SEPIC and reverse ZETA modes with reduced ripple currents and increased voltage gains attributed to the optimized selection of duty ratios. All switches in the proposed converter can be operated at zero-current-switching turn-on and/or turn-off through soft current commutation. Therefore, the switching and conduction losses of the proposed converter are considerably reduced compared with those of conventional bidirectional SEPIC/ZETA converters. The operation principles and characteristics of the proposed converter are analyzed in detail and verified by the simulation and experimental results.

  • For low-power high-frequency LED driver applications in small form factor mobile products, a high-efficiency boundary conduction mode tapped-inductor boost converter is proposed. In the proposed converter, the switch and the diode achieve soft-switching, the diode reverse-recovery is alleviated, and the switching frequency is very insensitive to output voltage variations. The circuit is quantitatively characterized, and the design guidelines are presented. Experimental results from an LED backlight driver prototype for a 14 inch notebook computer are also presented.

  • For the purpose of combining the purification processes for several biologically active proteins form human urine, an efficient integrated fractionation procedure has been investigated. The procedure was started by concentration with ultrafiltration and pH precipitation followed by a selectable combination of chromatography on gel filtration, adsorption, ion exchanger, affinity, and reverse phase column. By this process, the purified urokinase, epidermal growth factor and albumin migrated as a single band on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and were fully active. The recoveries of these purified proteins were 48%, 17%, and 46%, respectively.

  • The synthesis and characterization of diastereomeric dodecanucleotides, d[GATCp(S)TCGAGATC], containing recognition sequence of the XhoI restriction endonuclease with a phosphorothioate internucleotidic linkage the cleavage site are described. Rp and Sp form of diastereomerically pure dinucleoside phosphorothioates d[Cp(S)T] were presynthesized and used for the addition to the growing oligonucleotide chain as a block. The stereochemistry of dinucleoside phosphorothioate was assigned by 31P NMR spectroscopy, enzyme digestion, and reverse-phase HPLC. XhoI restriction endonuclease cut only Rp diastereomer d[GATCp(S))TCGAGATC]. The rate of hydrolysis is slower than that of the unmodified dodecamer d[GATCTCGAGATC]. The phosphorothioate nucleotide is using for determination of the stereochemical course of the XhoI catalyzed reaction.

  • DWP40458 is a novel human thrombopoietin mutein with two additional N-linked glycosylation site. The thermal stability of DWP40458 in both solution and lyophilized form was studied in the temperature range of 4-50$^{\circ}C$, compared with recombinant human TPO (rhTPO). When the aggregation or degradation pattern of DWP40458 and rhTPO solution was characterized by using SDS-PAGE, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and reverse phase HPLC, it was found that thermostability of DWP40458 was significantly different to rhTPO in the temperature at 25, 40, 40, 50$^{\circ}C$.
