The development of paper machines, increasing machine speeds with new, mostly low basis weight and/or high ash content paper grades, as well as the fact that several trends regarding process items have increased the sensitivity of papermaking. At the same time, papermakers are looking for flexibility in the production line. We can say that with all PMs the biggest benefits with the lowest capital spending can be achieved by focusing on improved wet end management. In order to manage wet end chemistry on a paper machine, our goal is to control sub-process through which we can influence the operation of the entire wet end with maximum effect. Key measurements and controls are-white water consistency control which is the most effective way to control retention - charge demand measurement and control which takes care of concentration of the anionic material entering to PM -ash measurements and controls which are deeply related to retention and paper quality This paper presents and concentrates to two of these key controls ; retention and charge. The purpose of charge control is to give the process control the tools to react to changes caused by amount of dissolved and colloida material incoming to wet end system. It is called coagulation or fixing control. Retention control is then taking care of retention aid flow to the process by responding any changes seen in white water consistency. It is called flocculation control. Each of these solutions separately , and even more effectively all together, stabilize the wet end operations and so greatly improve the produced paper quality and machine runnability. Practical results will be presented and they are referring to the latest mill cases. We have developed the first wet end measuring system in the late 1980s and control solutions based on this modern measuring technology were completely updated in 1990s. This paper introduces the principle, operation , and results of our unique wet end analyzers (retention and charge ) which are at the level of automation solutions as a part of paper machine quality control Especially our newest member of the platform , on-line charge analyzer has reached and set new standards to the on-line charge monitoring.

Coexisting voiding and bowel dysfunction in children are common in the clinic. The idea that overactive bladder (OAB) and constipation arise from one single pathophysiology has been reinforced in many studies. In Korea, a nationwide multicenter study conducted in 2009 showed that overall prevalence of OAB in children, 5-13 years of age, was 16.59% and this number has increased more recently. The initial step to manage coexisting fecal retention and OAB in children is to characterize their bowel and bladder habits and to treat constipation if present. Although diagnosing constipation in children is difficult, careful history-taking using the Bristol Stool Form Scale, and a scoring system of plain abdominal radiography, can help to estimate fecal retention more easily and promptly. Non-pharmacological approaches to manage functional constipation include increasing fluids, fiber intake, and physical activity. Several osmotic laxatives are also effective in improving OAB symptoms and fecal retention. Additionally, correction and education in relation to toilet training is the most important measure in treating OAB with fecal retention.

The benefits of high performance retention systems have been long recognized by the paper maker. The inter-relation between chemical retention and drainage and their effect on paper production efficiency and paper quality is significant. The subject of this paper is a summary of recent studies comparing three microparticle programs made under highly controlled pilot and commercial paper machine conditions. The results presented in this paper suggest that, in addition to improvements in machine operation, the retention, drainage and formation program can have a marked influence on the paper quality. Improvement of the topographical characteristics of the base paper was observed when the microparticle was a colloidal borosilicate inorganic oxide.
The retention of solutes in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography depends on their hydrophobicity. Although the retention behaviors of alkyl benzenes have been reported so far, quite a few authors have mentioned the retention behavior of alkyl benzenes with plural hydrophobicity parameters. In this sense, we were interested in the retention behaviors of alkyl benzenes having benzene moiety and increasing alkyl chain. In this study, we therefore investigated the retention behavior of alkyl benzenes in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography in order to obtain information concerning the effects of the aromatic moiety and the carbon chain on the retention mechanism by comparing their capacity factor (k') in relation to the carbon chain length. The eluent acetonitrile ($CH_3CN$) showed high selectivity on alkyl benzenes, showing the high difference of capacity factor (${\Delta}log\;k'$) between toluene and octyl benzene. Indeed, the ${\Delta}log\;k'$ of 80% $CH_3CN$ represented 1.42- and 4.25-times longer than 90% MeOH and 60% THF, respectively. The hydrophobicity parameters, van der Waals volume, bond constant, partition constant, $\pi$-energy effect and enthalpy were evaluated with the capacity factor (k') of alkyl benzenes eluted on 80% CH3CN, 90% MeOH and 60% THF, respectively. The best eluent for predicting retention behavior of alkyl benzenes was 90% MeOH ($R^2$ 0.999). The three parameters, van der Waals volume, bond constant and partition constant were well coincident to log k' by increasing alkyl benzenes. However, $\pi$-energy effect and enthalpy were severely disagreeable. Taken together, van der Waals volume, bond constant and partition constant were a reliable parameters to predict the retention behaviors of alkyl benzenes on reversed-phase column.
The hydrological cycle system in the city is generally characterized by quick runoff, bad infiltration, low evaporation rate, and so on. It is caused by sealing greens up with pavements. Also, there are lots of contradictory environmental problems, such as inundation, the lack of underground water and dryness in the city, caused by the urban drainage system which is mostly focused on the quick draining off rainfall. In addition, the technique joining rain and sewage, which has more dangers of inundation, occupies 66% between two Korean drainage systems which consist of joining and dividing system. There has been some need to convert the present drainage system into the environmentally friendly hydrological cycle system. This is a theoretical study to examine some foreign cases and suggested applicable methods in our country, focusing on the environmentalyl friendly system of rainfall drainage. The precipitation treatment system can be made up of some possible phases choosing from premanagement, utilization, infiltration, retention, and inducement phases. Therefore, this study mostly focused on infiltration, retention, and inducement phases. It is necessary to suggest the multifunctional utilization of outdoor spaces, especially applying in new constructing and re-constructing residential estates.
Over the past 20 years there has been a revolution involving the use of nano or macro size particles as drainage and retention systems during the manufacture of paper. More recently a group of patented technologies called Synthetic Mineral Microparticles (SMM) has been invented and developed. This system has potential to further promote the drainage of water and retention of fine particles during papermaking. Prior research, as well as our on preliminary research showed that the SMM system has advantages in both of drainage and retention compared with montmorillonite (bentonite), which one of the most popular materials presently used in this kind of application. In spite of the demonstrated advantages of this SMM system, the properties and activity of SMM particles in the aqueous state have not been elucidated yet. Streaming current titrations with highly charged polyelectrolytes were used to measure the charge properties of SMM and to understand the interactions among SMM particles, fibers, fiber fines, and cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM) as a retention aid. It was found that pH profoundly affects the charge properties of SMM, due to the influence of Al-ions and the Si-containing particle surface. SEM pictures, characterizing the morphology, geometry and size distribution of SMM, showed an broad distribution of primary particle size. Dilution of SMM mixturee appeared to wash out particles smaller than 100 nm from the surface of larger particles, which themselves appeared to be composed of fused primary particles. DSC thermoporometry was used to measure the size distribution of nanopores within SMM particles.
The effectiveness of hot thermal retention system which was being used in 3 general hospitals, A,B, and C in Seoul was evaluated in terms of time-temperature relationship. The results of the study were summrized as follows: 1) The serving temperature of steamed rice using insulated bowls were significantly higher than those of using no thermal support. 2) The serving temperatures of soup using insulated bowls were significantly higher than those of using no thermal support. 3) The serving temperatures of meat of fish dishes using insulated bowls as well as warmer cabinet were significantly higher than other groups such as using warmer cabinet only, using insulated bowls only, and using no thermal support. 4) However surveyed serving temperatures of meals using hot thermal retention system were not whthin the range of temperature criteria.
