In this study, three pilot-scale wetland systems were built for treating stormwater runoff from asphalt road. Each of the system consists of a settling tank and a vertical flow wetland packed with 25%, 50%, and 75% woodchip as treatment media. According to the analysis of the distributions of particle size, it was found that solids ranging in size $0.52-30{\mu}m$ were predominant in the stormwater runoff. After 24-hours settling, those coarser than $20{\mu}m$ were significantly detained. Further retention, especially for the finer-sized fraction, occurred in the wetland through internal recirculation during the dry day periods. As a primary media of the wetland, woodchip showed a high filtration and attachment capacity for the particulates in pre-settled stormwater, whereas overall amount of solids in the wetland effluent increased due to the detachment of woody elements from the media. This was observed mainly during the initial 75 days of operation, and the size and detachment rate were found to be strongly related with the woodchip packing ratio. The mechanism involving woody particle detachment was modeled as a first-order form. In addition, water quality factors and operational parameters affecting the detachment were analyzed and discussed.
A new technique for the preparation of porous polyurethane vascular prostheses was investigated. Synthetic vascular grafts with porous wall have been widely proposed, claiming that strength, suture retention, kink resistance, and other handling properties are improved over those with nonporous solid wall. Related to these facts, the control of pores and compliance match have been very important and interesting issues. Two kinds of polymer sheets were compared. One was the porous PU-sheet made at room temerature by the solvent/non-solvent exchange. And the other was the porous PU-sheet fabricated by thermal phase transition and solvent/non-solvent exchange in the thermal controlled bath. According to the result of the above experiments, polyurethane solution was injected into a mold designed for U-type graft. After freezing at low temperature, solvent was dissolved out with alcohol at < $0^{\circ}C$ and water at room temperature to form porous vessels. The average pore size and pore occupation were easily changed by changing polyurethane concentration and freezing rate. This technique can give a proper pore size for tissue ingrowth, and suitable compliances for matching with arteries and veins. In addition, the fabrication of more complicated shaped vessels such as the U-type vascular grafts is easily controlled by using a mold. This method might give a desired compliact graft for artificial implantaion with the commercially available medical polymers.
Changes in pH, titratable acidity, some organic acids and brix of the strawberry stored at the different levels of $CO_2$, in air were measured. The changing trends in pH and the acidity of the strawberries were not clear among the storage treatments, and pH of the strawberries in all the treatments was increased(r=0.9615) by contrast to decrease in the acidity(r=-0.8483). Ascorbic acid content of the strawberries at control lot was higher than the contents of the CA stored for the initial 2 weeks after storage. This trend was reversed after that period and the strawberries in air with 30% $CO_2$, showed the highest retention rate, 28% of the initial content after 5 weeks. Among the analyzed organic acids, malic acid was gradually decreased in all the treatments during storage and the decreasing rates of the strawberries in air with 30% $CO_2$, was somewhat stupider than those in the others. Pyruvic acid was reduced in the control lot during storage but drastically increased in the strawberries stored at the CA storage conditions between the 2nd and the 3rd week after storage, and then it was decreased.
Background: To minimize the use of antibiotics and to obtain a more sustainable fish culture and aquaculture industry, development of alternative natural source of immunostimulant to replace antibiotic in aquafeed is highly needed. Objective: Dietary inclusion effect of yacon (YC), ginger (GG), and blueberry (BB) on growth, body composition, and disease resistance of black rockfish against Vibrio anguillarum was compared to ethoxyquin (EQ). Methods: Four hundred eighty juvenile (an initial weight of 4.2 g) fish were randomly distributed into 12 of 50 L flowthrough tanks (forty fish per tank). Four experimental diets were prepared; the control (Con) diet with 0.01% EQ inclusion, and YC, GG, and BB diets at 1% each additive inclusion. Each additive was included into the experimental diets at the expense of wheat flour. Each diet was assigned to triplicate tanks of fish and hand-fed to satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. At the end of 8-week feeding trial, 20 fish from each tank fish were artificially infected by intraperitoneal injection with 0.1 mL of culture suspension of pathogenic V. anguillarum containing 3.3 × 106 cfu/mL respectively. Fish were monitored for the following 8 days after V. anguillarum infection and dead fish were removed every 6 h for the first 4 days and 12 h for the rest of the study. Results: Weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and feed efficiency ratio (FER) of fish fed the YC diet was higher than those of fish fed all other diets. However, feed consumption, protein efficiency ratio, and protein retention was not affected by dietary additive. Moisture, crude protein, and crude lipid content of the whole body of fish were affected by dietary additive. Analysis of the Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that survival of fish fed the YC, BB, and GG diets was higher than the Con diet. Conclusion: Oral administration of YC can improve not only weight gain, SGR, and FER of black rockfish, but lower mortality of rockfish at occurrence of V. anguillarum.
Systematic toxicological analysis (STA) means the process for general unknown screening of drugs and toxic compounds in biological fluids. In order to establish STA, in previous study we investigated pattern of drugs & poisons in autopsy cases during 2007~2009 in Korea, and finally selected 62 drugs as target drugs for STA. In this study, rapid and simple drug identification and quantitative analytical program by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) was developed. The in-house program, "DrugMan", consisted of modified chemstation data analysis menu and newly developed macro modules. Total 55 drugs among 62 target drugs were applied to this program, they were 14 antidepressants, 8 anti-histamines, 5 sedatives/hypnotics, 5 narcotic analgesics, 3 antipsychotic drugs, and etc. For calibration curves, fifty five drugs were divided into four groups of range considering their therapeutic or toxic concentrations in blood specimen, i.e. 0.05~1 mg/l, 0.1~1 mg/l, 0.1~5 mg/l or 0.5~10 mg/l. Standards spiked bloods were extracted by solid-phase extraction (SPE) with trimipramine-D3 as internal standard. Parameters such as retention times, 3 mass fragment ions, and calibration curves for each drug were registered to DrugMan. A series of identification, semi quantitation of target drugs and reporting the results were performed automatically. Calibration curves for most drugs were linear with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.98. Sensitivity rate of DrugMan was 0.90 (90%) for 55 drugs at the level of 0.5 mg/l. For standard spiked bloods at the level of 0.5 mg/l for 29 drugs, semi quantitative concentrations were ranged 0.36~0.64 mg/l by DrugMan. If more drugs are registered to database in DrugMan in further study, it will be useful tools for STA in forensic toxicology.
Hollow carbon spheres (HCS) and carbon spheres (CS) were prepared by a hydrothermal reaction and they were introduced as a substrate for the deposition of $MnO_2$ nanoparticles. The $MnO_2$ nanoparticles were deposited on the carbon surface by a chemical redox deposition method. After deposition, the $MnO_2$ nanoparticles were uniformally distributed on the carbon surface in a slit-shape, and sparse $MnO_2$ slits appeared on the HCS surface. The $MnO_2-HCS$ showed an initial specific capacitance of $164.1F\;g^{-1}$ at scan rate of $20mv\;s^{-1}$, and after 1,000 cycles, the specific capacitance was maintained to $141.3F\;g^{-1}$. The capacity retention of $MnO_2-HCS$ and $MnO_2-CS$ were calculated to 86% and 78% in the cycle performance test up to 1,000 cycles, respectively. $MnO_2-HCS$ showed a good cycle stability due to the mesoporous hollow structure which can cause a faster diffusion of the electrolyte and can easily adsorb and desorb $Na^+$ ions on the surface of the electrode.
Purified acorn starch was obtained from alkali precipitation method. Acorn amylose and acorn amylopectin were fractionated from purified acorn starch by butanol improvement method. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to measure molecular weight distribution of acorn starch, acorn amylose, acorn amylopectin and corn starch, corn amylose, corn amylopectin. GPC measurement diagrams were obtained by each retention time. And then, we used DMSO and DMF as solvent, pullulan as standard material. We calculated the Number-average molar mass (Mn), Weight-average molar mass (Mw) and polydispersity from molecular weight distribution of each sample. As a result of estimating molecular weight using GPC, Mw of amylose has small value than Mw of amylopectin. From this fact, the molecular structural aspects of amylose and amylopectin were predicted and it was in good agrement with the tendency of polydispersity by GPC. The polydispersity of starch had big value than amylose and amylopectin, from this result, it might be known that the range of molecular weight appeared broad by heterogeneous properties of two components. The viscosity of purified acorn starch, amylose, amylopectin seperated from acorn starch, was decreased by increasing the shear rate and raising the temperature exponentially. Acorn starch solutions exhibited pseudoplastic power law fluid behavior.
Hydrocyclone is widely used in industry, for its simple design, high capacity, low maintenance and low operational cost. The objective of this study is to develop hydrocyclone coagulation and filtration system. The system is made of hydrocyclone ballasted coagulation with polyaluminium chloride silicate (PACS) and upflow filter to treat micro particles in urban storm runoff. Roadside sediment particles (< $200{\mu}m$) was mixed with tap water to make various turbid suspensions to simulate urban storm runoff. The filter cartridge was filled with polyethylene media system and ran 1hr per everyday and total operation time were 8.19hrs and backwashing everyday after end of operation. The operation condition of flowrate was $8.2{\sim}11.9m^3/day$ (mean $10.1m^3/day$) and surface overflow rate (SOR) based on filter surface area was $45.5{\sim}65.9m^3/m^2/day$ (mean $55.7m^3/m^2/day$). The range of PACS dosage concentration was 14.0~31.5 mg/L. As the results of operation, the range of removal efficiency of turbidity, SS were 81.0~95.8% (mean 89.5%) 81.8~99.0% (mean 91.4%), respectively. An increase of filtration basin retention time brought on increased of removal efficiency of turbidity and SS, and increase of SOR brought on decreased of removal efficiency. During the first flush in urban area, storm runoff have an high concentration of SS (200~600 mg/L) and the filtration bed becomes clogged and decreased of removal efficiency. Backwashing begins when the drainage pipe valve at the filtration tank bottom is completely open (backwashing stage 1). Backwashing stage 2 was using air bubbles and water jet washing the media for 5 mins and open the drainage valve. After backwashing stage 1, 2, 61.83~64.04%, 18.53~27.51% of SS loading was discharged from filtration tank, respectively. Discharged SS loading from effluent was 7.12~14.79% and the range of residual SS loading in fliter was 2.26~5.00%. The backwashing effects for turbidity, SS were 89.5%, 91.4%, respectively. The hydrocyclone coagulation and filtration with backwashing system, which came out to solve the problems of the costly exchange filter media, and low efficiency of removing micro particles of filter type nonpoint treatment devices, is considered as an alternative system.

This study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of anaerobic pretreatment for the leachate solubilized from thermal hydrolysis of sewage sludge cake. Overall process for the treatment of sludge cake consists of thermal hydrolysis, crystallization of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate (MAP) for the leachate and anaerobic digestion of supernatant from MAP crystallization. The experimental evidence showed that the optimum ratio of Mg : P for the struvite crystallization of leachate solubilized from thermal hydrolysis of sludge cake was 1.5 to 1.0 as weight basis at the pH of 9.5. With this operational condition, the removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen and phosphorous achieved 50% and 97%, respectively. The mesophilic batch test showed that the ultimate biodegradability of the supernatant from MAP crystallization reached 63% at S/I ratio of 0.5. The readily biodegradable fraction of 90% ($S_1$) of the MAP supernatant BVS (Biodegradable Volatile Solids, $S_0$) degraded with $k_1$ of $0.207day^{-1}$ for the initial 17 days where as the rest slowly biodegradable fraction ($S_2$) of 10% of BVS degraded with $k_2$ of $0.02day^{-1}$ for the rest of the operational period. Semi-Continuously Fed and Mixed Reactor (SCFMR) was chosen as one of the best candidates to treat the MAP supernatant because of its total solids content over 6%. Maximum average biogas production rates reached 0.45 v/v-d and TVS removal efficiency of 37~41% was achieved at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20 days and its corresponding organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.43 g VS/L-d.
