Sediment basin that is typical facility installed for development business to prevent soil erosion has low removal efficiency and therefore, it causes complaints from the residents and has a bad effect on ecosystem. Thus there is a limit to control soil erosion using the existing design methods of sediment basin, so the purposes of this study is providing suitable design factors for sediment basin with regarding soil characteristic of development areas and analysing sedimentation characteristic by inflow concentration changes. The results, for analyzing the sedimentation characteristic by soil concentrations within approximately 2,000 ~ 20,000 mg/L of initial SS concentration, indicated similar sedimentation trends for same soil in the supernatant regardless of initial concentrations. However, for different soil characteristic (percent finer), there are different results in sedimentation rate and concentrations of the supernatant. Thus it is recommended that sediment basin to prevent soil erosion during construction should be designed based on retention time derived from soil sedimentation experiments regardless of inlet concentration. In addition, installing the soil erosion prevention facility at the back to satisfy effluent water quality should be considered to minimize soil erosion effectively.
Several large scale reclamation projects are being underway along the coastal line in Korea. Therefore the large quantity of economical backfill material is necessary to cope with the shortage of dredged soil. In this study, the amount of volume reduction of dredged soil from detention basin was evaluated based on the laboratory tests. The percentage of soil particles in dredged organic soil is about 12.5∼21.9% by weight. The content of heavy metal and environmental effect for dredged soil itself and solidified dredged soil were analysed and the results are far below than those of environmental requirement.
The main purpose of the flocculation process is to make flocs bigger to be removed easily in the following processes. The flow pattern and mixing intensity have a great influence on flocculation. In this study, the flow pattern was examined by a hydraulic tracer-test, where 3 water treatment plants having $800,000m^3/d$, $44,000m^3/d$ and $40,000m^3/d$ were employed. Also, the settling test was conducted to find out the relationship between the mixing intensity and the settling ability of flocs. The hydraulic tracer-test was conducted for the various flocculation processes that have different structures of flocculation basins. In the result, the retention time distribution (RTD) curves for the flocculation processes were quite different. In case of the inappropriate structure of the flocculation basin, the flow is not even so that the floc does not grow enough. To find out the relationship between mixing intensity and settleability of flocs, G-values were calculated and the settling test was conducted for two flocculation basins which have the same conditions except the G-value. For the flocculation basin with uneven G-value, the floc settleability was revealed poor. On the other hand, the flocculation basin with even G-value, the settleability was better than the previous one. From these experimental results, it is confirmed that the flow pattern is closely related to the structure of the flocculation basin and the settleability is affected by mixing intensity. Therefore the flow pattern and the strength of the mixing intensity should be examined sufficiently to design and operate flocculation basin.
Field experiment was performed from August 1996 to June 2000. The pilot plant was installed in Konkuk University and the effluent from septic tank of school building was used as an influent to the treatment basin. The treatment basin was composed of sand and reed. Average removal rate of BOD, SS was about 75.9%, 73.4%, respectively. T-P removal rate was about 47.3%, and T-N removal rate was 19.6%. The reason for poor T-N removal might be due to high influent concentration and short retention times. As operation period increased, BOD removal rates were increased, and SS and T-P removal rates did not change significantly, but T-N removal rates were decreased.
The present study was designed to evaluate primary production organic matter in basin of lake around by execution of total maximum daily loading. BOD influent loading of Uiam lake was 2,819 kg/day, which was less then 28.3 percent, total effuluent loading as 3,619 kg/day, in comparision with BOD, total nitrogen influent loading was 4,681 kg/day, which was less then 10.0 percent, total effuluent loading as 5,150 kg/day. But in case of total phosphors influent loading was 73.3 kg/day, which was more then 34.2 percent, total run off loading as 48.3 kg/day. The result of survey reduction plan of primary production organic matter in basin of lake around which objectives of abstract is as follows. First plan was reduction of primary production organic matter by moving the outlet of municipal wastewater treatment center from present place to lake downstream. Secondary plan was improvement by diffusion type of outlet municipal wastewater treatment center. The third plan was reduction of environmental impact by passing and storing of municipal wastewater. Finally plan was decline water surface level which was present hydrouric retention time was reduction from 7.6 day to 6.0 day per meter.
Flooding situation of Sutak basin was simulated and simulation seemed to be consistent with the real flooding situation in terms of high water levels and timings of flooding. The flood simulation model was used to evaluate alternatives to mitigate flooding problems in Sutak basin. From the evaluation of flood mitigation plans, it was found that combined operation of Sutak and Inchang pumping stations through partial diversion of inflow of Sutak pumping station to Inchang pumping station was the most effective one among the suggested mitigation plans. About 500 meter diversion channel will be needed to send 30% of Sutak pumping station inflow to Inchang pumping station. This will reduce overload of Sutak pumping station and the storage capacity of Inchang pumping station will be more efficiently utilized.
A macro spreadsheet model, WEANES (Wet Pond Annual Efficiency Simulation Model), has been developed to predict the long-term or annual removal efficiencies of wet retention/detention basins. The model uses historical, site-specific, multi-year, rainfall data, usually available from a nearby National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) climatological station to estimate basin efficiencies which are calculated based on annual mass loads. Other required input parameters are: 1) watershed parameters; drainage area, pervious curve number, directly connected impervious area, and ti me of concentration, 2) pond parameters; control and overflow elevations, pond side slopes, surface areas at control elevation and pond bottom; 3) outlet structure parameters; 4) pollutant event mean concentrations; and 5) pond loss rate which is defined as the net loss due to evaporation, infiltration and water reuse. The model offers default options for parameters such as pollutant event mean concentrations and pond loss rate. The model can serve as a design, planning, and permitting tool for consulting engineers, planners and government regulators.
Fine suspended solids and soluble heavy metals generated from mine drainage could destroy environment as the aesthetic landscapes, and depreciate water quality. Therefore, this research is focused on process development applied the actual field for controlling fine suspended solids and heavy metals, and so that bench-scale tests were performed for field application based on advanced researches. The field of mine drainage in this research was in H mine located Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do. The inclination plates were mounted 2 kinds of arrangement (octagon and radial types) in circle type settling basin. The inclination plates could be helped to settle of suspended solids; decreased 34% of suspended solids and 50% of turbidity in effluent. Radial type of inclination plates showed the results that is more efficient to settle of suspended solids (average to 3.45 mg/L) compared to octagon type. In the experiments to decrease retention time of mine drainage in settling basin from 6 hrs to 1.5 hrs, suspended solid concentration was exceeded to 30 mg/L as the standard for suspended solid at 10 days after the operation under tha retention time of 3hrs and 1.5hrs. In the tests for filtration, granular activated carbons were indicated the better effective to filtering and absorption of fine suspended solid and soluble heavy metals than anthracite.
A natural wetland in the Nakdong River basin which effectively removes non-point source pollutants was investigated for 2 years to understand wetland topography, vegetation types, and water quality characteristics. The water depth of the natural wetland was in the range of 0.5~1.9 m which is suitable for the growth of non-emergent hydrophytes. The wetland has a high length to width ratio (3.3:1) and a relatively large wetland to watershed area ratio (0.057). A broad-crested weir at the outlet increases the retention time of the wetland whose hydrology is mainly dependent on storm events. The concentrations of dissolved oxygen in the growing season and the winter season showed anoxic and oxic conditions, respectively. Diurnal variations of DO and pH in the growing season were also observed due to weather change and submerged plants. COD and TP concentrations were low in the winter season due to low inflow rate and increased retention time. Increased TP concentrations in the spring season were caused by degradation of dead wetland plants. Nitrogen in the wetland was mostly in organic nitrogen form (>75%). During the growing season, ammonium concentration was high but nitrate nitrogen concentration was low, possibly due to anoxic and low pH conditions which are adverse conditions for ammonificaiton and nitrification. The results of this study can be used as preliminary data for design, operation, monitoring and management of a constructed wetland which is designed to treat diffuse pollutants in the Nakdong river watershed.
Objectives: The purpose of this experiment is to understand the phosphorus removal ratio effects of iron plates per unit of surface area through the iron electrolysis system, which consists of an anoxic basin, aerobic basin, and iron precipitation apparatus. Methods: Iron electrolysis, which uses an iron precipitation reactor in anoxic and oxic basins, consisted of iron plates with total areas of 400 $cm^2$, 300 $cm^2$ and 200 $cm^2$ respectively. The FNR process was operated with a hydraulic retention time and a sludge retention time of 12 hours and three days, respectively. Wastewater used in the experiments was prepared by dissolving $KH_2PO_4$ in influent water. Results: The iron plates 400 $cm^2$ (16.6 $mA/cm^2$), 300 $cm^2$ (13.3 $mA/cm^2$) and 200 $cm^2$ (7.3 $mA/cm^2$) in surface area in the phosphorus reactor had respective phosphorus of 2.4 mg/l, 2.7 mg/l and 3.2 mg/l in the effluent and phosphorus removal respective efficiencies of 90.3%, 89.1% and 87.1%. The effluent in the reactor, where the iron plate was not used, had relatively very low phosphorus removal efficiency showing phosphorus concentration of 15.3 mg/l and a phosphorus removal efficiency about 38.3%. Phosphorus removal per ferrous was 0.472 mgP/mgFe in the iron electrolysis system where the surface area of iron was low. Phosphorus pollution load per active surface area and the phosphorus removal efficiency had an interrelation of RE = -0.27LS + 89.0 (r = 0.85). Conclusion: With larger iron plate surface area, the elution of iron concentration and phosphorus removal efficiency was higher. The removal efficiency of phosphorus has decreased by increasing the initial phosphate concentration in the iron electrodes. This shows a tendency of decreasing phosphorus removal efficiency because of decreasing of iron deposition as the phosphorus pollution load per active surface area increases.
