  • Image enhancement is a challenging problem in the field of image processing, especially low-light color images enhancement. This paper proposed a robust and comprehensive enhancement method based several points. First, the idea of bright channel is introduced to estimate the illumination map which is used to attain the enhancing result with Retinex model, and the color constancy is keep as well. Second, in order eliminate the illumination offsets wrongly estimated, morphological closing operation is used to modify the initial estimating illumination. Furthermore, in order to avoid fabricating edges, enlarged noises and over-smoothed visual features appearing in enhancing result, a multi-scale closing operation is used. At last, in order to avoiding the haloes and artifacts presented in enhancing result caused by gradient information lost in previous step, guided filtering is introduced to deal with previous result with guided image is initial bright channel. The proposed method can get good illumination map, and attain very effective enhancing results, including dark area is enhanced with more visual features, color natural and constancy, avoiding artifacts and over-enhanced, and eliminating Incorrect light offsets.

  • In this paper, an efficient contrast enhancement algorithm using histogram stretching is proposed. Histogram equalization (HE) and histogram stretching (HS) are effective techniques for contrast enhancement. However, HE and HS result often in excessive contrast enhancement. Proposed technique not only produces better results than those of conventional contrast enhancement techniques, but is also adaptively adjusted to image contents.

  • Histogram equalization method is a popular contrast enhancement technique. However, there are some drawbacks, namely, over-enhancement, under-enhancement, structure information loss, and noise amplification. In this paper, we propose an edge-enhancing histogram equalization algorithm while suppressing over-enhancement simultaneously. Firstly, over-enhancement is suppressed by clipping a transfer function, then, edge enhancement is achieved by using guided image filter. Experiments are carried out to evaluate the performance of the various HE algorithms. As a result, both qualitative and quantitative assessment showed that the proposed algorithm successfully suppressed over-enhancement while enhancing edges.

  • Image enhancement is an emerging method for analyzing the images clearer for interpretation and analysis in the spatial domain. The goal of image enhancement is to serve an input image so that the resultant image is more suited to the particular application. In this paper, a novel method is proposed based on Mamdani fuzzy inference system (FIS) using multiple fuzzy membership functions. It is observed that the shape of membership function while converting the input image into the fuzzy domain is the essential important selection. Then, a set of fuzzy If-Then rule base in fuzzy domain gives the best result in image contrast enhancement. Based on a different combination of membership function shapes, a best predictive solution can be determined which can be suitable for different types of the input image as per application requirements. Our result analysis shows that the quality attributes such as PSNR, Index of Fuzziness (IOF) parameters give different performances with a selection of numbers and different sized membership function in the fuzzy domain. To get more insight, an optimization algorithm is proposed to identify the best combination of the fuzzy membership function for best image contrast enhancement.

  • This paper proposed a symmetric feedback current enhancement circuit with 1.5V power supply to design a 3$^{rd}$ order butterworth low pass filter. The proposed filter designed on 0.8.mu.m CMOS n-well double poly/double metal process simulated in HSPICE composed of the 3dB frequency enhancement circuit and the unity-gain frequency enhancement circuit. The simulation result on the design filter shows the badnwith of 25MHz, phase of 92.6 .deg. and power consumption of 0.3mW..

  • In spite of advances in image resolution and film contrast, check screen/film mammography remains one of diagnostic imaging modality where the image interpretation is very difficult. For the enhancement of film mammography, in this paper, dyadic wavelet transform is introduced. An unsharp masking technique is proposed and performed in wavelet domain. In addition, simple nonlinear enhancement and a denosing stage that preserves edges using wavelet shrinkage are computed into this technique. In this paper. we propose a new method for the gain setting of nonlinear enhancement and show result and comparison.

  • The paper handles a skin tone enhancement within digitalized images, which is based on human favorite skin color. To archive a human-favorite skin tone area, lots of observers are participated in visual experiments. The statistical result of the visual experiment was reflected in a proposed skin tone enhancement algorithm and gives more reasonable human-friendly skin color reproduction on a display device. This research was accomplished to implement in our DTV related application.

  • This paper presents an image contrast enhancement technique for improving low contrast images. We applied fuzzy logic to develop an image contrast enhancement technique in the viewpoint of considering that the low pictorial information of a low contrast image is due to the vaguness or fuzziness of the multivalued levels of brightness rather than randomness. The fuzzy image contrast enhancement technique consists of three main stages, namely, image fuzzification, modification of membership values, and image defuzzification. In the stage of image fuzzification, we need to select a crossover point. To select the crossover point automatically the K-means algorithm is used. The problem of crossover point selection can be considered as the two-category, object and background, classification problem. The proposed method is applied to an experimental image with 256 gray levels and the result of the proposed method is compared with that of the histogram equalization technique. We used the index of fuzziness as a measure of image quality. The result shows that the proposed method is better than the histogram equalization technique.

  • Enhancement of footwear impressions in urine on the surface of tiles by using p-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde (DMAC), which react with urea, and ninhydrin, 1,8-diazafluoren-9-one (DFO), 1,2-indanedione/zinc (1,2-IND/Zn), which react with amino acid, was studied. As a result of comparing the application methods of reagents, the ninhydrin and the 1,2-IND/Zn were suitable for application with spray method, which is spray directly on footwear impression, DFO and DMAC were suitable for application with dry contact method, which is applying heat with press to DMAC impregnated paper on footwear impression. In addition, DMAC applied with dry contact method showed best contrast and enhancement result in both white and black colored tiles by comparing of the sensitivity by different dilution ratio of urine and the aging time of footwear impressions in urine. And the result of applied with DMAC (with dry contact method) on the floor tiles collected at various places in a building's men's and women's bathrooms, it can be successfully enhanced that footwear impressions in urine. So it is believed that the method can be used to recover footwear impressions in urine from real crime scenes.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to analyze the patterns of intervertebral disc enhancement seen in infectious spondylitis, differentiate between two groups[tuberculous vs pyogenic spondylitis]. Methods : Between January 1994 and December 2002, 83patients underwent operative procedure with confirmed to histopathologic evaluation. Magnetic resonance[MR] images were obtained in all patients and were analyzed retrospectively. 57patients had tuberculosis and 26patients were infected by pyogens. The patterns of gadolinium enhancement of disc were classified into 4 types[post's classification] : Type I, non-enhancing; Type II, enhancement of the peripheral rim; Type III, Type II with central area and partial endplate; Type IV, general enhancement. Results : The enhancement patterns observed were as follows : Common pattern of tuberculous spondylitis was Type II, and pyogenic spondylitis was Type III. [p < 0.01] This difference may result from pathophysiologic varieties of organisms. Conclusion : Careful preoperative MR analysis of the patterns of disc enhancement occuring in infectious spondylitis can be useful for differentiating between the tuberculous and pyogenic spondylitis.
