  • In this study, the effects of solution components were investigated in the recovery of vanadium as ammonium metavanadate from vanadium-ore-salt roasting-water leaching solution. The vanadium-containing solution is strongly alkaline (pH 13), so the pH must be lowered to 9 or less to increase the ammonium metavanadate precipitation efficiency. However, in the process of adjusting the solution pH using sulfuric acid, aluminum ions are co-precipitated, which must be removed first. In this study, aluminum was precipitated in the form of an aluminum-silicate compound using sodium silicate, and the conditions for minimizing vanadium loss in this process were investigated. After aluminum removal, the silicate was precipitated and removed by adjusting the solution pH to 9 or less using sulfuric acid. In this process, the concentration and addition rate of sulfuric acid have a significant influence on the loss of vanadium, and vanadium loss was minimized as much as possible by slowly adding dilute sulfuric acid. Ammonium metavanadate was precipitated using three equivalents of ammonium chloride at room temperature from the aluminum-free, aqueous solution of vanadium following the pH adjustment process. The recovery yield of vanadium in the form of ammonium metavanadate exceeded 81%. After washing the product, vanadium pentoxide with 98.6% purity was obtained following heat treatment at 550 ℃ for 2 hours.

  • A basic study was conducted to effectively recover nitric acid from a waste solder stripper by diffusion dialysis using anion exchange membranes. The effects of flow rate, flux ratio, nitrate concentration, and metallic ion types and concentration on the recovery percentage of nitric acid were investigated. The recovery percentage of nitric acid was decreased with the increase of flow velocity. But the recovery percentage of nitric acid was increased as the increase of flux ratio(W/F) and showing a recovery percentage of nitric acid of about 99% at a flux ratio of 1.5 or more. As the increase of nitric acid concentration in feed solution, the recovery percentage of nitric acid was increased up to 3.0M, but in case of greater than 3.0M, the recovery percentage gradually was decreased. Leakage percentage of metallic ions through the membrane were in the order of Pb, Na and Cu but Fe and Sn did not leakaged. As a result of diffusion dialysis using real waste solder stripper at a flow rate of $0.9L/hr-m^2$, W/F = 1.3, a recovery percentage of nitric acid of approximately 94% was gained.

  • Marine mineral resources are classified into submarine and seawater mineral resources. In seawater, huge amounts of useful minerals, such as uranium, lithium, magnesium, aluminum, zinc, iron, silver, copper, vanadium, nickel, titanium and cobalt are present. If the rare metals recovery technology from seawater is developed, the commercialization of the precess will be possible. For the 21st century, countries rich in resoures tend to weaponize the resources, according to the depletion of reserves and quality degradation of metal resources in the land. Therefore, Korea that relies on imports for most of the metal resources, should focus on the research and development of the rare metals recovery technology from seawater by using the geographical characteristics of the country that is on three sea-sides.

  • Recently, the amount of electronic scrap is rapidly increasing due to the rapid growth of the electronics industry. Among the components of electronic scrap, the printed circuit board(PCB) is an important recycling target which includes common metals, precious metals, and rare metals such as gold, silver, copper, tin, nickel and so on. In Korea, however, PCB recycling technologies are mainly commercialized by some major companies, and other process quantities are not accurately counted. According to present situation, several urban mining companies, research institutes, and universities are conducting research on recovery of valuable metals from PCBs and/or reusing them as raw materials that is different from existing commercialization process developed by major companies. In this study, we analyzed not only current status of collection/disposal process and recycling of waste PCBs in Korea but also the trend of recycling technologies in order to help resource circulation from waste PCBs become more active.

  • Recently, it is increasing a amount of installed solar-cell rapidly, and end-of-life photovoltaic(ELP) modules are generated in according to the reduction of cell efficiency largely. Recycling of ELP modules are begun at an advanced nation already, but there are bring about environmental contamination and resource recovery problems owing to not treated ELP modules because of economic cost completely. First of all, there were researched basic study for treatment conditions of used solar cell inspection, dismantling of aluminum frame, crushing / grinding & separation of tempered glass, removal of back sheet & EVA film, leaching & precipitation recovery of valuable metals and treatment of waste water. Therefore, we establish optimum conditions through carried out of designed apparatus, installation of equipment, test operation & trouble shooting in scale of 1ton/day pilot plant test. Following to economic review, it does have the economic efficiency until to the case of tempered glass recovery, but does not have the economic value in case of total processes until to recover the valuable metals. However, there are guaranteed economic value if we are gained a large amount of the expenses through EPR supported system. It was confirmed the commercialized possibility of ELP modules recycling if there were established on the collecting ELP modules, reusing criteria, economical technology, enactment of directives and enforcement of EPR supported system efficiently.

  • This study is carried out experiments on various factors for improving the grade of low grade scheelite by Knelson concentrator prior to the main beneficiation process. Even though there are several gravity separators such as Jig, Spirals and etc. for rougher concentrate, the KC3 Knelson Concentrator was adopted to get better separation efficiency and beneficiating effects for pre-concentration of the low grade scheelite ore. The feed samples was prepared to minus 1mm in size by crushing and grinding. The important factors in the KC3 Knelson Concentrator test were examined in terms of the variations such as number of treatment, feed rate, rotation speed of bowl(G force), water flow rate, pre-removal of magnetic minerals, feed size and feed grade. According to the result of experiment, it shows that the important technical variations are limited in terms of number of treatment, feed rate, feed size and feed grade. The final result shows that the KC3 Knelson Concentrator obtains the scheelite pre-concentrate of about $3%WO_3$ grade and 90% recovery, respectively, from the feed containing about $0.8-1.0%WO_3$ grade.

  • This study investigated formaldehyde (HCHO) removal by preparing porous supports using domestic low-grade silica coated with Co-ZSM5 and Cu-ZSM5 as the catalysts. First, the sample of the raw material for the support contained 90% silica with quartz crystal phase, which was confirmed as low-grade silica. According to Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses, the catalysts, Co-ZSM5 and Cu-ZSM5, were successfully coated on the surface of the porous silica supports. During the removal test of HCHO using the prepared Co-ZSM5 and Cu-ZSM5 coated beads, depending on the reaction temperature, the Co-ZSM5 coated beads exhibited higher removal efficiencies (>97%) than the Cu-ZSM5 beads at 200 ℃. The higher efficiency of the Co-ZSM5 coating may be attributed to its superior surface activity properties (BET surface area and pore volume) that lead to the favorable HCHO decomposition. Therefore, Co-ZSM5 was determined to be the suitable catalyst for removing HCHO as a coating on a porous support fabricated using domestic low-grade silica.
