  • Free radicals including reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important chemicals in the research area of biology, pharmaceutical, medical, and environmental science as well as human health risk assessment as they are highly involved in diverse metabolism and toxicity mechanisms through chemical reactions with various components of living bodies. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for detecting and quantifying those radicals in biological environments. In this work we observed the ESR signal of 2,2,6,6-Tetra-methyl piperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) in aqueous solution at various concentrations to estimate the uncertainty factors arising from the experimental conditions and signal treatment methods. As the sample position highly influences the signal intensity, dual ESR tube geometry (consists of a detachable sample tube and a position fixed external tube) was adopted. This type of measurement geometry allowed to get the relative uncertainty of signal intensity lower than 1% when triple measurements are averaged. Linear dependence of signal intensity on the TEMPO concentration, which is required for the quantification of unknown sample, could be obtained over a concentration range of ~103 by optimizing the signal treatment method depending on the concentration range.

  • Ferromagnetic resonance experiments have been used to investigate the magnetic properties of amorphous $Co_{89.5}Zr_{10.5}$ thin films deposited by DC magnetron sputtering method. In the thickness range from $350\;{\AA}$ to $3,200\;{\AA}$, measurements were carried out in a static magnetic field perpendicular and parallel to the film plane and in a conventional 9.44 GHz spectrometer at room temperature. The ferromagnetic resonance spectra by the field perpendicular to the film plane showed standing spin wave. The spacing and the relative intensities between the various spin wave resonance peaks are analysed considering surface magnetic anisotropy. The surface magnetic anisotropy constant ($K_{so},\;K_{sd}$) of amorphous $Co_{89.5}Zr_{10.5}$ thin films are $0.02\;erg/\textrm{cm}^2$ and $0.55\;erg/\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively regardless of the film thickness except for $3,200\;{\AA}$ film. In case of $3,200\;{\AA}$ these values are $0.46\;erg/\textrm{cm}^2$ and $0.55\;erg/\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively.

  • Low-noise amplifiers in the radio-frequency (RF) band based on the direct current (DC) superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) can be used for quantum-limited measurements in precision physics experiments. For the prediction of peak-gain frequency of these amplifiers, we need a reliable design formula for the resonance frequency of the microstrip circuit. We improved the formula for the resonance frequency, determined by parameters of the DC SQUID and the input coil, and compared the design values with experimental values. The proposed formula showed much accurate results than the conventional formula. Minor deviation of the experimental results from the theory can be corrected by using the measured geometrical parameters of the input coil line.

  • The aim of this investigation was to evaluate successfully functioning implants stability in the partially edentulous mandibular molar sites by resonance frequency measurements. Resonance frequency measurement is more objective and clinically non-invasive method than any other methods had been used. In this study, $Osstell^{TM}$ (Integration Diagnostics, Sweden) was used. 15 patients ( 7 males, 8 females ) were received each 2 implants in their mandibular unilaterally partial edentulous molar sites. Total 30 implants were installed, 28 implants were $Br{\aa}nemark^{(R)}$ self-tapping fixtures(MK II, Nobel Biocare, Sweden) and 2 were $3i^{(R)}$(USA) self-tapping fixtures. Minimum of functional loading durations was 12 months and there were no significant marginal bone resorptions and peri-implant problems. From this test, the following results were drawn: 1. Mean ISQ values of implants in the first and second mandibular molar area were $73.66{\pm}4.45$, $71.93{\pm}3.41$, respectively. There was no significant difference between two groups(p>0.05). Also mean ISQ value of total sum was 72.8. 2. Mean ISQ values of implants in males and females group were $71.64{\pm}4.06$, $73.81{\pm}3.76$, respectively. And there was no significant difference between two group(p>0.05). 3. Correlation between implant lengths and ISQ values was weak(r=0.128).

  • Objective: To assess the position and movements of the hyoid bone during deglutition in patients with open bite. Methods: Thirty-six subjects were divided into 2 groups according to the presence of anterior open bite. The open bite group (OBG) and control group each comprised 18 patients with a mean overbite of $-4.9{\pm}1.9$ mm and $1.9{\pm}0.7$ mm. The position of the hyoid bone during the 4 stages of deglutition was evaluated by measuring vertical and horizontal movement of the bone. Results: Interactions of group and stage showed no significant effect on the measurements (p > 0.05). However, when group and stage were evaluated individually, they showed significant effects on the measurements (p < 0.001). In OBG, the hyoid bone was more inferiorly and posteriorly positioned, and this position continued during the deglutition stages. Conclusions: The hyoid bone reaches the maximum anterior position at the oral stage and maximum superior position at the pharyngeal stage during deglutition. Open bite does not change the displacement pattern of the bone during deglutition. The hyoid bone is positioned more inferiorly and posteriorly in patients with open bite because of released tension on the suprahyoid muscles.

  • We report a new method for highly controllable local patterning of a hydrogel on microfabricated cantilevers and fabrication of all hydrogel microcantilevers. We constructed a dynamic mask based photolithography setup using a commercial beam projector, a 3-axis microstage and other optical components. Dynamic masks generated from the beam projector controlled the shape, size, and position of hydrogel patterns while the 3-axis microstage mainly controlled the thickness of hydrogel patterns and hydrogel microcantilevers. Using the constructed setup, polyethyleneglycol diacrylate (PEGDA) was patterned on microfabricated cantilevers in a highly controlled manner. Currently, the smallest PEGDA patternable is a 5-${\mu}m$-diameter circle with a thickness of ~$10{\mu}m$. To confirm thicknesses of patterned PEGDAs on silicon microcantilevers, resonance frequencies of microcantilevers were measured before and after each PEGDA patterning. Thicknesses extracted from resonance measurements showed good agreement with measurements using an optical microscope. In addition, PEGDA microcantilevers with various dimensions and thicknesses were fabricated on glass and silicon substrates. Surfaces of fabricated all hydrogel microcantilevers were flat enough to facilitate other post processing and to be used for various sensing applications.

  • Purpose: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data must be analyzed by an analyzer after data processing. Hence, the analyzed data of DTI might depend on the analyzer, making it a major limitation. This paper reviewed previous DTI studies reporting the repeatability and reproducibility of data from the corticospinal tract (CST), one of the most actively researched neural tracts on this topic. Materials and Methods: Relevant studies published between January 1990 and December 2018 were identified by searching PubMed, Google Scholar, and MEDLINE electronic databases using the following keywords: DTI, diffusion tensor tractography, reliability, repeatability, reproducibility, and CST. As a result, 15 studies were selected. Results: Measurements of the CSTs using region of interest methods on 2-dimensional DTI images generally showed excellent repeatability and reproducibility of more than 0.8 but high variability (0.29 to 1.00) between studies. In contrast, measurements of the CST using the 3-dimensional DTT method not only revealed excellent repeatability and reproducibility of more than 0.9 but also low variability (repeatability, 0.88 to 1.00; reproducibility, 0.82 to 0.99) between studies. Conclusion: Both 2-dimensional DTI and 3-dimensional DTT methods appeared to be reliable for measuring the CST but the 3-dimensional DTT method appeared to be more reliable.

  • Tracers are one of the critical factors for improving the performance of velocimetry. Silver and gold nanoparticles as tracers with localized surface-plasmon resonance are analyzed for their scattering properties. The scattering cross sections, angular distribution of the scattering, and equivalent scattering cross sections from 53° and 1.5° half-angle cones at 532 nm are calculated, with particle sizes in the nanoscale range. The 53° and 1.5° half-angle cones used as examples correspond respectively to the collection cones for microscope objectives in microscopic measurements and camera lenses in macroscopic measurements. We find that there is a transitional size near 35 nm when comparing the equivalent scattering cross sections between silver and gold nanoparticles in water at 532 nm. The equivalent scattering cross section of silver nanoparticles is greater or smaller than that of gold nanoparticles when the particle radius is greater or smaller than 35 nm respectively. When the radius of the plasmonic nanoparticles is smaller than about 44 nm, their equivalent scattering cross sections are at least ten times that of TiO2 nanoparticles. Plasmonic nanoparticles are promising for velocimetry applications.

  • Purpose: Little is known regarding the accuracy of clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocols with acceptable scan times in sinus graft assessment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations between MRI and cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) measurements of maxillary sinus grafts using 2 different clinical MRI imaging protocols. Materials and Methods: A total of 15 patients who underwent unilateral sinus lift surgery with biphasic calcium phosphate were included in this study. CBCT, T1-weighted MRI, and T2-weighted MRI scans were taken 6 months after sinus lift surgery. Linear measurements of the maximum height and buccolingual width in coronal images, as well as the maximum anteroposterior depth in sagittal images, were performed by 2 trained observers using CBCT and MRI Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine files. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) was also performed to confirm the presence of bone tissue in the grafted area. Correlations between MRI and CBCT measurements were assessed with the Pearson test. Results: Significant correlations between CBCT and MRI were found for sinus graft height (T1-weighted, r=0.711 and P<0.05; T2-weighted, r=0.713 and P<0.05), buccolingual width (T1-weighted, r=0.892 and P<0.05; T2-weighted, r=0.956 and P<0.05), and anteroposterior depth (T1-weighted, r=0.731 and P<0.05; T2-weighted, r=0.873 and P<0.05). The presence of bone tissue in the grafted areas was confirmed via micro-CT. Conclusion: Both MRI pulse sequences tested can be used for sinus graft measurements, as strong correlations with CBCT were found. However, correlations between T2-weighted MRI and CBCT were slightly higher than those between T1-weighted MRI and CBCT.
