  • Admittance or impedance spectroscopy is one of the powerful tools to study dielectric relaxation and loss processes in organic and inorganic materials. In this study, the frequency dependent properties of an indium tin oxide/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum($Alq_3$)/aluminum structure have been studied. The conductance of the $Alq_3$ film increases with the DC applied voltage up to 4V and decreases above 4V in the low frequency region. This indicates that the resistance of the device decreases with the applied bias due to the carrier injection enhancement, thereafter the injected carriers form the space charge and the additional injection of carriers is prevented. The Cole-Cole plot of the admittance takes a one-semicircle shape, which means that the device can be modeled as a parallel resistor-capacitor network. The resistance and capacitance were estimated as 8.62k${\Omega}$ and 2.7nF, respectively, at 3V in the low frequency region. The dielectric constant ( ${\epsilon}'$ ) of the $Alq_3$ film is independent of the frequency in the low frequency region below 100kHz, while the frequency dependency was observed at above 100kHz. The dielectric loss factor ( ${\epsilon}"$ ) of the $Alq_3$ film shows the dielectric dispersion below 100kHz and dielectric absorption in higher frequency domain. The dispersion is thought to be related to the hopping process of the carriers. The ${\epsilon}"$ is proportional to the reciprocal of the frequency. The dielectric relaxation time was extracted to about 0.318${\mu}s$ from the dielectric absorption spectrum.

  • To examine the magnetic shielding effect for carbon-based materials at extremely low frequencies (60 Hz), two types of carbon black (Super-P and Denka Black) and a natural graphite (HC-198) were mixed into organic binder at 10 wt.% to produce a coating solution, and a powder coating with varying thickness was applied on an aluminum disk measuring 88 mm in radius. A device was developed to measure the sheielding effect at extremely low frequencies. A closed circuit was achieved by connecting a transformer and a resistor. The applied voltage was fixed at 65 V, and the magnetic field was measured to being the range of 4.95~5.10 mG. Depending on the thickness of the coating layer, the magnetic field showed a decreasing trend. The maximum decrease in the magnetic field of 38.3% was measured when natural graphite was coated with specimens averaging $455{\mu}m$. This study confirmed that carbon-based materials enable magnetic shielding at extremely low frequencies, and that the magnetic shielding effect can be enhanced by varying the coating thickness.

  • When the line and switchgear of the substation system are disconnected, ferro-resonance can occur. This happens even if the capacitive reactance and inductive reactance are not equal, which are not common resonance conditions. Resonance conditions vary depending on the busbar configuration environment. Although the damping resistance method applying the existing saturable reactor to cope with ferro-resonance has been successfully applied on site, there can be loss of normal function during long-term operation. The reason is because the rise in the operating frequency of saturable reactors means the saturation number is increased. Therefore, it can no longer function as saturable reactor since the resistor having inadequate capacity is burned out. To address this problem, in this paper, an EMTP-based simulation test was performed by designing and applying a dual reactor method, which adds an extended divergence reactor to the 1st side of the VT. The test result confirms that when the divergence reactor is inserted, the voltage and current values obtained at the 1st side and 2nd side of the VT as well as current values of divergence reactor part were stabilized from the transient phenomena and return to normal values. When compared with existing measures, although this method is similar in adding having a reactor added to a system regarding ferro-resonance, it has the advantage of being able to prevent ferro-resonance in advance since the reactor is added before the system is saturated. In addition, because it does not use damping resistance, it can extend the equipment life and stabilize its operation. Therefore, there are a lot of differences in terms of its operating characteristics and achivement of goal between the conventional method and new divergence reactor method.

  • This paper presents a stable lighting method for HID lamp for ship from initial discharging current limit with discharging voltage control. The output voltage of the proposed control scheme is boosted for ignition, and the charging voltage is decreased by the resistor discharging. The proposed controller fires the initial discharge at the designed discharging voltage to limit the discharge current. After the discharging, constant current controller is used for brightness in steady state. The proposed control scheme can limit the initial discharge current using the starting point control without a complex voltage controller. so it can improve the life-time of HID lamp and get a stable discharge from restricted the initial discharge current. In order to improve the protection of the system, a simple instantaneous error detecting circuit for open state and short state of HID lamp is used. The proposed error detecting of HID lamp can protect the power system of lamp control. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified from the experiments of practical 2.5[kW] HID search light for ship.

  • The design of the integrated quench protection (QP) system for the high current superconducting magnet (SCM) has been fabricated and tested for the toroidal field (TF) coil system of the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device. The QP system is capable of protecting the TF SCM, which consists of 16 identical coils serially connected with a stored energy of 495 MJ at the design operation level at 35.2 kA per turn. Given that the power supply for the TF coils can only ramp up and maintain the coil current, the design of the QP system includes two features. The first is a basic fast discharge function to protect the TF SCM by a dump resistor circuit with a 7 s time constant in case of coil quench event. The second is a slow discharge function with a time constant of 360 s for a daily TF discharge or for a stop demand from the tokamak control system. The QP system has been successfully tested up to 40 kA with a short circuit and up to 34 kA with TF SCM in the second campaign of KSTAR. This paper describes the characteristics of the TF QP systems and test results of the plasma experiment of KSTAR in 2009.

  • The maximun short circuit current of modern power system is becoming so large that circuit breaker is not expected to be able to shut down the current in the future In order cut over-currents, a system composed of a superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) and traditional breaker seems to provide a promising solution for furture power operation. In present paper, three line-to-ground fault is assumed to happen at the center of 345kV transmission lines in a large capacity electric power system. The superconducting fault current limiter was represented using a commutation type, which consists of a non-inductive superconducting coil and current limiting element (resistor or reactor). from the viewpoint of current limiting performance, the prevention of the voltage drop at the load bus and comparision characteristics for two type SFCL. Desired design specification and operation parameters of SECL were also given qualitatively by the performance.

  • A swing level controlled voltage-mode transmitter is proposed to support a stub series-terminated logic channel with center-tapped termination. This transmitter provides a swing level control to support the diagnostic mode and improve the signal integrity in the absence of the destination termination. By using the variable parallel termination, the proposed transmitter maintains the constant output impedance of the source termination while the swing level is controlled. Also, the series termination using an external resistor is used to reduce the impedance mismatch effect due to the parasitic components of the capacitor and inductor. To verify the proposed transmitter, the voltage-mode driver, which provides eight swing levels with the constant output impedance of about $50{\Omega}$, was implemented using a 70nm 1-poly 3-metal DRAM process with a 1.5V supply. The jitter reduction of 54% was measured with the swing level controlled voltage-mode driver in the absence of the destination termination at 1.6-Gb/s.

  • A TRIAC dimming LED driver that can control the brightness of LED arrays for a wide range of source voltage variations is proposed in this paper. Unlike conventional PWM LED drivers, the proposed LED driver adopts a TRIAC switch, which inherently guarantees zero current switching and has been proven to be quite reliable over its long lifetime. Unlike previous TRIAC type LED drivers, the proposed LED driver is composed of an LC input filter and a variable switched capacitance, which is modulated by the TRIAC turn-on timing. Thus, the LED power regulation and dimming control, which are done by a volume resistor in the same way as the conventional TRIAC dimmers, can be simultaneously performed by the TRIAC control circuit. Because the proposed LED driver has high efficiency and a long lifetime with a high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion (THD) characteristics, it is quite adequate for industrial lighting applications such as streets, factories, parking garages, and emergency stairs. A simple step-down capacitive power supply circuit composed of passive components only is also proposed, which is quite useful for providing DC power from an AC source without a bulky and heavy transformer. A prototype 60 W LED driver was implemented by the proposed design procedure and verified by simulation and experimental results, where the efficiency, PF, and THD are 92%, 0.94, and 6.3%, respectively. The LED power variation is well mitigated to below ${\pm}2%$ for 190 V < $V_s$ < 250 V by using the proposed simple control circuit.

  • In this paper, the new LLCL filter is proposed for grid connected three-phase PWM inverter for passive damping. LLCL filter inserts a small inductor in the branch of the capacitor of the traditional LCL filter to compose a series resonant circuit to reduce the switching-frequency component on grid current. Using LLCL filter, the switching-frequency current ripple components can be attenuated much better than the LCL filter, leading to a decrease in the total inductance. However, the resonance phenomena caused by zero impedance from the addition of LC branch in LLCL filter can be a big problem. Resonance phenomena of LLCL filter can be a source of grid system instability, so proper damping methods are required. However, it is difficult to apply a passive damping method in the conventional LLCL filter, because the damping resistor increase impedance of the LC branch. Therefore, switching frequency component of grid current can not much attenuated by low Q of LC series resonance effect. In this paper, a new LLCL filter is proposed to overcome the conventional LLCL filter with passive damping. The validity of the proposed method is proven by simulation and experimental result.

  • Utilization of Distributed Generations (DGs) using Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) has been constantly increasing as they provide a lot of environmental, economic merits. In spite of these merits, some problems with respect to voltage profile, protection and its coordination system due to reverse power flow could happen. In order to analyze and solve the problems, accurate modeling of DG systems should be preceded as a fundamental research task. In this paper, we present a PhotoVoltaic (PV) generation system which consists of practical PV cells with series and parallel resistor and an inverter for interconnection with a main distribution system. The inverter is based on controllable current source which is capable of controlling power factors, active and reactive powers within a certain limit related to amount of PV generation. To verify performance of the model, a distribution system based on actual data is modeled by using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) software. Computer simulations according to various conditions are also performed and it is shown from simulation results that the model presented is very effective to study DG-related researches.
