  • Viscous flows through a screen normal to an uniform flow are numerically simulated. A .kappa.-.epsilon. model is adopted for evaluation of the Reynolds stresses. The existence of a screen is regarded as extra sources in the momentum equations. The amount of extra sources is related to the resistance coefficient and the refraction coefficient of the screen. Flows are numerically simulated for various resistance coefficients and heights of the screen and Reynolds numbers. The present method has been verified to reasonably simulate viscous wakes and shear layers of the screen, for which the inviscid theory is quite limitted. As the fluids approach the screen, the velocity is reduced and the pressure is raised to satisfy the Bernoulli equation. After passing the screen, the velocity shows its minimum value at the down-stream, but static pressure is slowly recovered. A detached separation-bubble from the screen appears as the resistance coefficient is increased to a certain level. Such results are qualitatively in agreement with limitted experimental data available. The turbulent kinetic energy shows its maximum value at further down stream and decrease thereafter.

  • Recently, due to the rapid development of electric vehicle and energy storage system, it is emphasized for battery management system to be needed and to be improved. BMS carries out various movement for optimization the use of the energy and safe use of secondary battery, these movement of BMS start at high wattage shunt fixed resistor which performs a function for detecting current among the BMS components. In addition, for the safe operation of secondary battery, the reliability of current voltage variation detected from shunt should be secured, and for corresponding characteristics, the quality of Temperature coefficient of resistance for BMS shunt and the quality of Thermo electromotive force all must be excellent. For these reasons, this study comes up with the stabilization plan for thermo electromotive force and temperature coefficient of resistance of BMS shunt resistor which is key to secondary battery operation.

  • A depth-integrated model with an approximate Riemann solver for flux computation of the shallow water equations was applied to hydraulic jump experiments. Due to the hydraulic jump, different flow regimes occur simultaneously in a single channel. Therefore, the Weisbach resistance coefficient, which reflects flow conditions rather than the Manning roughness coefficient that is independent of depth or flow, has been employed for flow resistance. Simulation results were in good agreement with experimental results, and it was confirmed that Manning coefficients converted from Weisbach coefficients were appropriately set in the supercritical and subcritical flow reaches, respectively. Limitations of the shallow water equations that rely on hydrostatic assumptions have been revealed in comparison with hydraulic jump experiments, highlighting the need for the introduction of a non-hydrostatic shallow-water flow model.

  • Hydrogen has emerged as an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. However, the utilization of hydrogen requires high-pressure compression, storage, and transportation, which poses challenges to the durability of compressor components, particularly the diaphragm. This study aims to improve the durability of 304 stainless steel diaphragms in hydrogen compressors by optimizing their surface roughness and corrosion resistance through wet etching. The specimens were prepared by immersing 304 stainless steel in a mixture of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, followed by etching in hydrochloric acid for various durations. The surface morphology, roughness, and wettability of the etched specimens were characterized using optical microscopy, surface profilometry, and water contact angle measurements. The friction and wear characteristics were evaluated using reciprocating sliding tests. The results showed that increasing the etching time led to the development of micro/nanostructures on the surface, thereby increasing surface roughness and hydrophilicity. The friction coefficient initially decreased with increasing surface roughness owing to the reduced contact area but increased during long-term wear owing to the destruction and delamination of surface protrusions. HCl-30M exhibited the lowest average friction coefficient and a balance between the surface roughness and oxide film formation, resulting in improved wear resistance. These findings highlight the importance of controlling the surface roughness and oxide film formation through etching optimization to obtain a uniform and wear-resistant surface for the enhanced durability of 304 stainless steel diaphragms in hydrogen compressors.

  • In this study, we conduct fretting corrosion tests on tin-plated brass coupons to investigate the effect of temperature on fretting corrosion for various span amplitudes. We prepare a coupled fretting corrosion specimens using a tin-plated brass coupon with a thickness of $10{\mu}m$. One specimen is a flat coupon and the other specimen is a coupon with a protuberance in 1 mm radius, which is produced using 2 mm diameter steel ball. We conduct fretting corrosion tests at $25^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, $75^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$ by rubbing the coupled coupons together at the contact between the flat and protuberance coupons. We measure electric resistance of the contact during the fretting corrosion test period. There is increase in resistance with fretting cycles. It is found that rate of increase in electric resistance becomes faster with increase in testing temperature. Magnitude of friction coefficient increases with fretting span amplitudes. And, change in friction coefficient becomes desensitized to the increment in span amplitude. Assuming that failure cycle is the cycle with an electric resistance of $0.01{\Omega}$, we find that failure lifetime ($N_f$) decreases with increase in testing temperature. Furthermore, based on the assumption that the damage rate of the connector is inversely related to the failure cycle, we calculate the activation energy for fretting damage to be 13.6 kJ/mole by using the Arrhenius equation. We propose a method to predict failure cycle at different temperatures for span amplitudes below $30{\mu}m$. Friction coefficients generally increase with increase in span amplitude and decrease in testing temperature.

  • The objective of the present study is to provide statistical resistance statistics for steel-concrete composite plate girder sections under positive and negative moments. Statistical properties on yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and fracture toughness of domestic structural steel products, gathered from an analysis of over 16,000 samples, were evaluated. Using the steel samples for the plate girder, the bias factor and the coefficient of variation of the ultimate flexural resistance for representative composite plate girder sections under positive and negative flexures were presented. In calculating the ultimate flexural resistance of the composite section, the moment curvature relationships were developed using the incremental load approach considering material nonlinearity for the steel girder. The predicted statistics can be used in the future for the efficient calibration of LRFD code.

  • High sensitivity IR image sensors require materials characteristics with temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and IR range absorption. In this study, the metal-dielectric thermo sensitive films (MDTF) based on $(SiO_2)_x-(Ti)_y$ composition were deposited on substrates of germanium and glass by thermal evaporator. The $SiO_2$ : Ti mixture was made from the ratio of 9 : 1, 8 : 2, 7 : 3, 6 : 4, respectively. $(SiO_2)_x-(Ti)_y$ mixture powder was loaded on tungsten boat in evaporator and was 15.5 cm from the substrate. Resistance of $(SiO_2)_x-(Ti)_y$ in the range of 273~333K were measured as a function of temperature. Temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) was calculated by the resistance variation. Under the various mixture ratios condition, it is possible to obtain $SiO_2$-Ti layers with resistance from units kilo-ohm to hundreds kilo-ohm. Finally, our results showed that Temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of these films varies from -1.4 to $-2.6%K^{-1}$.

  • The research on surface modification technology has been advanced to improve the properties of engineering materials. Ion implantation is a novel surface modification technology that enhances the mechanical, chemical and electrical properties of substrate's surface using accelerated ions. In this research, nitrogen ions were implanted into AC7A aluminum substrates which would be used as molds for rubber molding. The composition of nitrogenion implanted aluminum and distribution of nitrogen ions were analyzed by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). To analyze the modified surface, properties such as hardness, friction coefficient, wear resistance, contact angle, and surface roughness were measured. Hardness of ion implanted specimen was higher than that of untreated specimen. Friction coefficient was reduced, and wear resistance was improved. From the experimental results, it can be expected that implantation of nitrogen ions enhances the mechanical properties of aluminum mold.

  • To predict the powering performance of full scale ships from the towing tank tests, resistance, propeller open water and self-propulsion tests are conducted. Model tests inevitably include the experimental error defined as the sum of two types of uncertainties, bias and precision errors. The induced errors in each element of model test are propagated through various routes and correlated with one another. The correlation coefficients are very important in the uncertainty analysis. The coefficient gives a direction(increase or decrease) for a value of error in individual elements. If the coefficient is not used accurately, the error bounds of the individual elements are overestimated or underestimated. In this study, the new methodology is applied to the uncertainty analysis of HMRI's towing tank tests, thus error bounds of each element is suggested and verified by several repetitive experiments.
