The properties of off-gas generated from vitrification process of ion-exchange resin were characterized. Theoretical composition and flow rate of the off-gas were calculated based on chemical composition of resin and it's burning condition inside CCM. The calculated off-gas flow rate was 67.9Nm$^3$/h at the burning rate of 40kg/h. And the composition of off-gas was avaluated as $CO_2$(41.4%), steam(40.0%), $O_2$(13.3%), NO(3.6%), and SO$_2$(1.6%) in order. Then, actual flow rate and composition of off-gas were measured during pilot-scale demonstration tests and the results were compared with theoretical values. The actual flow rate of off-gas was about 1.6 times higher than theoretical one. The difference between theoretical and actual flow rates was caused by the in-leakage of air to the system, and the in-leakage rate was evaluated as 36.3Nm$^3$/h. Because of continuous change in the combustion parameters inside CCM, during demonstration tests, the concentration of toxic gases showed wide fluctuation. However, the concentration of CO, a barometer of incompleteness of combustion inside CCM, was stabilized soon. The result showed quasi-equilibrium state was achieved two hours after feeding of resin.
The chemical characterization of water-soluble organic carbon in ash emitted from a coal combustion boiler has not been reported yet. A total of 5 ash samples were collected from the outlet of an electrostatic precipitator in a commercial 500 MW coal-fired power plant, with their chemical characteristics investigated. XAD7HP resin was used to quantify the hydrophilic and hydrophobic water-soluble organic carbons (WSOC), which are the fractions of WSOC that penetrate and remain on the resin column, respectively. Calibration results indicate that the hydrophilic fraction includes aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and carbonyls (<4 carbons), amines and saccharides, while the hydrophobic fraction includes aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (>4-5 carbons), phenols, aromatic acids, cyclic acid and humic acid. The average mass of the WSOC in the ash samples was found to depend on the bituminous coal type being burned, and ranged from 163 to 259 ${\mu}g$ C/g of ash, which corresponds to 59-96 mg C of WSOC/kg of coal combusted. The WSOC mass accounted for 0.02-0.03 wt% of the used ash sample mass. Based on the flow rate of flue gas produced from the combustion of the blended coals in the 500 MW coal combustion boiler, it was estimated that the WSOC particles were emitted to the atmosphere at flow rates of 4.6-7.2 g C/hr. The results also indicated that the hydrophilic WSOC fraction in the coal burned accounted for 64-82% of the total WSOC, which was 2-4 times greater than the mass of the hydrophobic WSOC fraction.

The increasing demand for clean energy requires considerable effort to find alternative energy sources, such as briquettes. This research aims to develop a charcoal briquette with added pine resin (API) that has excellent combustion speed and distinctive aroma. Briquettes are composed of charcoal, pine resin (concentration: 0%-30%), and starch (up to 7%). They are produced in several stages, including coconut shell pyrolysis in conventional combustion, to obtain charcoal for the briquette precursor. Briquette compaction is conducted by mixing and densifying the charcoal, pine resin, and starch using a hydraulic press for 3 min. The hydraulic press has a total surface area and diameter of 57.7 cm2 and 3.5 cm, respectively. The briquettes are dried at different temperatures, reaching 70℃ for 24 h. The study results show that the briquettes have a thickness and diameter of up to 2 and 3.5 cm, respectively; moisture of 2.18%-2.62%; ash of 11.61%-13.98%; volatile matter of 27.15%-51.74%; and fixed carbon content of 40.24%-59.46%. The compressive strength of the briquettes is 186-540 kg/cm2. Their calorific value is 5,338-6,120 kcal/kg, combusting at a high speed of 0.15-0.40 s. The methoxy naphthalene, phenol, benzopyrrole, and lauryl alcohol; ocimene, valencene, and cembrene are found in the API. The API briquette has several chemical compounds, such as musk ambrette, ocimene, sabinene, limonene, 1-(p-cumenyl) adamantane, butane, and propanal, which improve aroma, drug application, and fuel production. Accordingly, API briquettes have considerable potential as an alternative energy source and a health improvement product.
17 kinds of fire resistant paint which are currently used were painted on the MDF, to find flame resistance performance and smoking characteristics according to principal ingredient and characteristics of fire resistant paint. 45 degree combustion test and smoke density test were conducted to investigate the flame resistance performance and smoking characteristics. According to the 45 degree combustion test, acrylic resin type fire resistant paint showed the most excellent fire resistance performance. And the water soluble fire resistant paint showed better fire resistance performance compare to the solvent soluble paints. Also gloss paint showed better fire resistance performance than the flat paint. Based on the smoke density test, the smoke generation of fire resistant treated specimen of acrylic resin type was least. And the water soluble fire resistant paint generate little smoke than solvent soluble fire resistant paint.
For the last 2 decades, the bonding materials for the foundry sand and the foundry equipments with high performance have been developed and employed in the foundry shops. In those periods, the furan resins hardened in higher temperature have been replaced with the self-hardened ones in the room temperature. Simultaneously the various reclamation methods of the self-hardened furan resin sand have been developed in order to get the clean working environments, the reduction of solid wastes and the lower of production cost in the foundry. In this experimental study, the combustion reclamation method using the fluidized bed among the various methods was studied in order to reduce the L.O.I. and /or $N_2$ gas due to the deposition of the furan resins and the hardeners. Comparing the results of this experimental combustion reclamation method with those of the employed pneumatic method, the Surface Stability Index of the specimen made by combustion method is 30% higher than that of the latter one and L.O.I. decreases about 30%. The reclamation temperature of 650$^{\circ}C$ in this experimental fluidized bed would be recommended in the viewpoints of the reclamation period, the fuel consumption and the residual quantity of the furan resin. The formula determining the minimum fluidizing velocities according to the temperatures in the fluidized bed has been obtained.
Recently epoxy resin compositions having backbone of novolac derivatives with biphenylene compounds have been used as materials of eco-freindly EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound), because the cured epoxy resin compositions show the self-extinguishing without flame retardant additives. In this study, epoxy resin compositions were prepared and cured using novolac derivateves with biphenylene. Their propeties - structures of phenol derivatives and reactivity, thermal expansion, modulus, and thermal degradation - were obtained by DSC, DMA, TMA, TGA method. When both epoxy resin and hardenr had the biphenyl novolac structure, epoxy resin compositions showed low thermal expansion, good mechanical property, and combustion retardation.
Woodfiber insulation board can be considered as a one of the key material for low energy consumption, comfortable and safety construction of residential space because of its eco-friendly and high thermal insulation performance. This study was carried out to investigate the formaldehyde (HCHO) total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) emission properties and combustion shapes by flame test of low density fiberboards (LDFs) prepared with different adhesives. HCHO TVOC emission and combustion properties of LDFs prepared by melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF), phenol formaldehyde (PF), emulsified methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (eMDI) and latex resin adhesives were measured by desiccator method, 20 L chamber method, and flame test, respectively. As results, LDFs manufactured by MUF, eMDI and latex resin adhesives satisfied the Super $E_0$ grade of HCHO emission performance except PF resin. Furthermore, TVOC emission of all LDFs were satisfied the Korean indoor air quality standard (below $400{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$). Especially, LDF with eMDI resin adhesive showed the lowest HCHO and TVOC emissivity, that $0.14mg/{\ell}$, $12{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$, respectively. However, eMDI emitted the small amount ($3{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$) of toluene in VOC components. In the flame test, LDF with MUF resin adhesives showed the most favorable shape after flame test compare to LDFs prepared other adhesives. Based on HCHO and TVOC emission, and combustion shapes, MUF resin adhesive may be recommended to prepare LDF for insulation purpose.
This study has conducted an experiment of comparing the flame resistant performance and combustion characteristics according to flame resistant treatment using the Cypress Luba and particle board that is commonly used for interior decoration and furniture. As a result of testing the flame resistant performance of Cypress Luba, the Cypress Luba injected with flame resistant resin using the vacuum pressure treatment has shown to have better performances (carbonized area 9.55% and carbonized length 22.91%) than the Cypress Luba treated with flame resistant coating having rubberized plastic components on its surface. For particle board, the specimen attached with fireproof film was identified to be better (carbonized area 40.10% and carbonized length 43.40%) than the specimen with non-fireproof film. For the results of combustion characteristics using the Cone Calorimeter, the specimen treated with flame resistant coating on the surface had faster ignition than the Cypress Luba injected with fire resistant resin using vacuum pressure treatment, and in the total release of calories, the Cypress Luba injected with fire resistant resin using vacuum pressure had $68.2MJ/m^2$, and the specimen treated with fire resistant coating on the surface had $111.52MJ/m^2$. For the particle board, the ignition time had a little difference but in the total release of calories, the specimen attached with fireproof film had $90.1MJ/m^2$ and the specimen with non-fireproof film had $107.6MJ/m^2$.

In this study, the procedures for quantitative measurement of void contents of carbon fiber/epoxy composites were suggested. Two types of the composites were considered: autoclave cured composite and filament wound composite. Void contents of the composites were evaluated by the density of the composites and their constituents, which was determined from weights in the air and water, and the weight fraction and volume fraction of the constituents obtained from the digestion method and combustion method. The surfaces of filtered carbon fibers were examined by FE-SEM in order to investigate the validity of resin removal from the composites. According to the results, the resin in the composites could be fully removed by the digestion method and combustion method. Therefore, the weight fraction and volume fraction of the constituents, and void content of the composites could be quantitatively obtained by the suggested procedures.

The effects of binder content and silica sand content on the durability characteristics of lightweight polymer concretes are examined. As a result, the flame lingering times using unsaturated polyester resin and non-combustible polyester resin were 60∼120 and 0∼4 seconds respectively, and the combustion lengths were 9∼11 mm and 0∼3 mm, respectively. Thus it is believed that the lightweight polymer concrete was incombustible and the light weight polymer concrete in which non-combustible material was added was perfectly non-combustible. The percent of original mass of lightweight polymer concrete, according to the freezing-thawing experiment, was below 0.3 %, which was much less than that of cement concrete. The pluse velocity, for the case of the binder content 28 %, showed the minimum decreasing rate for the lightweight polymer concrete with silica sand content of 50 %. The higher the binder content, the greater the durability. That is much higher than other material and believed that the freezing-thawing was suppressed by a low absorption.
