  • It has been considered that malic acid, $\alpha$-hydroky succinic acid, could not form crosslinks in the cellulosic materials unless activated by other polycarboxylic acids such as butanetetracarboxylic acid or citric acid because there are only two carboxylic acids per molecule available fur the formation of one anhydride intermediate. However we found that the dicarboxylic malic acid with sodium hypophosphite catalyst without the addition of other crosslinkers was able to improve wrinkle resistance of cotton up to $294^{\circ}$(dry WRA) and $285^{\circ}$ (wet WRA), which is a measure of crosslinking level in cotton. $^1$H FT-NMR, FT-IR and GPC analysis indicated the in-situ formation of an trimeric $\alpha$, $\beta$-rnalic acid with a composition of 1:3 through the esterification between hydroxyl group and one of carboxylic groups in malic acid during curing. The crosslinking of cotton was attributed to the trimeric $\alpha$, $\beta$-malic acid, a tetracarboxylic acid, which can form two anhydride rings during curing. The influence of crosslinking conditions such as concentrations of malic acid and catalyst, pH of the formulation bath, and curing temperature were investigated in terms of imparted wrinkle resistance and whiteness. The addition of reactive polyurethane resin in the formulation slightly increased the mechanical strength retention of crosslinked fabric coupled with additional increase in wrinkle resistance.

  • The culture filtrate of Lentinula edodes shows potent antimicrobial activity against the plant pathogenic bacteria Ralstonia solanacearum. Bioassay-guided fractionation was conducted using Diaion HP-20 column chromatography, and the insoluble active compound was not adsorbed on the resin. Further fractionation by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) suggested that the active compounds were organic acids. Nine organic acids were detected in the culture filtrate of L. edodes; oxalic acid was the major component and exhibited antibacterial activity against nine different phytopathogenic bacteria. Quantitative analysis by HPLC revealed that the content of oxalic acid was higher in the water extract from spent mushroom substrate than in liquid culture. This suggests that the water extract of spent L. edodes substrate is an eco-friendly control agent for plant diseases.

  • We measured $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of Humic-like substances (HULIS) in urban atmospheric aerosols isolated by diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) resin to characterize their chemical structure. HULIS isolated by DEAE resin were characterized by relatively high contents of aromatic protons and relatively low contents of aliphatic protons in comparison with HULIS isolated by HLB resin, while the contents of protons bound to oxygenated aliphatic carbon atoms were similar. These results were consistent with the results of the $^{13}C$ NMR analysis and indicate that hydrophobic components were more selectively adsorbed onto HLB, while DEAE resins selectively retained aromatic carboxylic acids. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the chemical structural features of HULIS were significantly different between spring and summer samples and that these disparities were reflective of their different sources. The estimated concentrations of HULIS in spring were found to be regulated by vehicle emissions and pollen dispersion, while the behavior of HULIS in summer was similar to photochemical oxidant and nitrogen dioxide concentrations. The proportion of aliphatic protons for summer samples was higher than that for spring samples, while the proportion of aromatic protons for summer samples was lower than that for spring samples. These seasonal changes of the chemical structure may also involve in their functional expression in the atmosphere.

  • The effect of collagen dissolution in acid conditioned dentin was morphologically examined by both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. 18 freshly extracted human molars and dentin bonding systems of All Bond 2, Scotchbond Multipurpose, Superbond D-Liner were used in this study. For SEM preparation, each 3 of ~ exposed dentin surfaces were acid conditioned by using various acids within the above three bonding systems respectively. After acid conditioning of the other 3 exposed dentin surfaces as above, they were treated with 1.7% NaOCl for 2 minutes. The remaining 3 dentin surfaces were acid conditioned and treated with 3.3 % NaOCl for 2 minutes. All of the specimens were then fixed in 4 % glutaraldehyde for 12 h at $4^{\circ}C$ and dehydrated in ethanols grades from 50 % to 100 %, then surface changes of the specimens were observed by using SEM. For TEM preparation, exposed dentin surfaces were acid conditioned with the same acid as SEM specimens and treated with 1.7%, 3.3 % NaOCl respectively, then applied with corresponding bonding agents. After the procedures were finished, composite resin were applied on the dentin surfaces and light cured. Small, rectangular sticks with end dimensions of approximately 1 by 1 mm were sectioned and further sample preparative techniques for transmission electron microscopy were performed in accordance with the procedures used for ultrastructural TEM observations of calcified tissues. The results were as follows : 1. In the 1.7 % NaOCl retreated specimens after acid conditioning, the porous dentin surface of intertubular dentin and wide opening of dentinal tubules were appeared. And there were fine irregularities on the intertubular dentin, indicating a clear difference as compared with the acid conditioned specimens. 2. In the 3.3% NaOCl retreated specimens after acid conditioning, the intertubular dentin was further eroded causing a more porous and wider opening of dentinal tubules. Moreover, sharp irregularities on the intertubular dentin were more evident than those of acid conditioned and 1.7% NaOCl retreated specimens. 3. In all of the acid conditioned specimens, the resin-dentin hybrid layer of approximately 3.5mm thickness was formed and the collapsed collagen layer was observed on the uppermost part of hybrid layer in the specimens applied with All Bond 2. The collgen fibrils of intertubular dentin in specimens applied with Scotchbond Multipurpose were running perpendicular to the interface, and electron dense black layer demarcated from the deep unaltered dentin was more evident in the specimen applied with Superbond D-Liner than any other specimens. 4. In the 1.7 % NaOCl retreated specimens after acid conditioning, the resin-dentin hybrid layer of approximately 2.5-3.0mm thickness was formed and the collapsed collagen layer and longitudinally running collagen fibrils as shown in the acid conditioned specimens were observed in the specimens applied with All Bond 2 and Superbond D-Liner. 5. In all of the 3.3% NaOCl retreated specimens after acid conditioning, the evidence of resin-dentin hybrid layer was not identified ; nevertheless, the longitudinally running collagen fibrils remained slightly in the specimens applied with All Bond 2.

  • Heterogeneous anion exchange membranes were prepared by compression molding for the recovery of sulfate ion from waste water. The swelling ratio, transport number, and ion exchange capacity of the heterogeneous anion exchange membranes were increased and their electrical resistances were decreased as the amount of ion exchange resin content in the matrix was raised. The tensile strength of the heterogeneous anion exchange membrane was decreased with increasing the amount of ion exchange resin in the LLDPE. The tensile strength for the LDPE heterogeneous membrane containing 30 wt% anion exchange resin showed the highest value. The water content increased with increasing amount of ion exchange resin in the membrane. Moreover the highest transport number of the membrane was 0.86. The electrical resistance of LDPE matrix membrane with 50 wt% resin showed $46.5{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$. Current efficiency of electrodialysis for sulfate ion showed the highest value at the current density of $125 mA/cm^2$ in 0.5 mol/L sulfuric acids solution.

  • Vapor-phase ETBE(ethyl tert-butyl ether) synthesis from TBA(tert-butyl alcohol) and ethanol was carried over solid acid catalysts such as heteropoly acids and proton type zeolites. Heteropoly acids were more active than proton type zeolites and $H_4SiW_{12}O_{40}$ catalyst showed about the same activity as Amberlyst-15 ion exchange resin catalyst used as an industrial catalyst in ETBE synthesis. The catalytic activity of transition metal exchanged heteropoly acids was greatly enhanced, because new acid site was generated with hydrogen reduction. This effect of hydrogen reduction was related to the reduction characteristics of catalysts and the order of reducibility was $Ag^+$>$Cu^{2+}$>$Fe^{2+}$.

  • An experimental Chung-Kook-Jang was prepared using the strain Bacillus subtilis sp. isolated by the author Samples were taken in 12 hrs interval during the fermentation and the oligopeptides were separated by the method of molecular sieving using the ion exchange resin column of Dowex-50. Only the X-16 fraction of oligopeptides was taken and the components of oligopeptides were developed in two dimensional thin layer chromatograms. The each peptide spot was eluted and each peptide was isolated. The pattern and kinds of amino acids, and N and C-terminal amino acids were studied. Fourteen different oligopeptides could be detected by the two dimensional thin layer chromatography, all of which were consisted of $4{\sim}9$ kinds of amino acids. No dipeptides and no tripeptides could be found. The N and C-terminal amino acids and the residual component amino acids of all these 14 peptides could be summarized as the follows. [P]-I. Pro (Cys Ala Asp Trp Ile Val) Glu [P]-II. Val (His Arg Glu Thr Ala Met) Asp [P]-III. Glu (Cys Lys Asp Thr Met) Ala [P]-IV. Glu(His Ser Ala) Met) [P]-V. Ile (Cys Asp Arg Gly Pro T.p Phe) His [P]-VI. • FcBP consisting of 13 amino acids specifically binds to Immunoglobulin G Fc domain. Initially, we utilized this peptide for preparation of antibody chip as a PEG composite for enhanced solubility. After then, the peptide conjugate was immobilized on agarose resin, resulting in highly efficient affinity column for antibody purification. The efficiency was comparable to commercial Protein A column. Recently, this peptide was conjugated with cell penetratingpeptide (CPP) on a backbone of GFP, affording antibody transducer, which carries antibody into live cells by simple mixing of antibody and the transducer in cell culture media. Antibody transduction into cells was monitored by live cell imaging. More recently, the FcBP was fused to ferritin cage, which consists of 24 ferritin protein molecules. The FcBP-ferritin cage showed greatly increased binding affinity to human IgG. Its binding was analyzed by QCM and SPR analysis. Finally, it was selectively delivered by Herceptin to SKBR3, a breast cancer cell, over MCF10A, non-tumorigenic cells.

  • A radiochemical separation scheme for the neutron activation analysis is developed for the determination of 28 elements in aluminum. The scheme is based on a group separation using ion-exchange resin and mineral exchanger. Present work has employed mineral acids and their partly organic mixture excluding HF as the media as well as common glass wares. For the determination, gamma-ray spectroscopy using $3"\times3"\;Nal(TI)$ detector and a single comparator method are used.

  • Gums, resins and gum-resins represent a variety of plant exudates that are highly prized and are extensively used in various industries. The usage of water soluble gums is growing at faster rate as they are excellent suspending agents, dispersants stabilizing agents, emulsifiers and gel forming agents. The gums are made up of carbohydrate polymers, composed of sugar units glycosidically condensed to form large molecules. Resins are non-volatile products, and oxidative products of terpenes or fatty acids, and are of greater commercial importance. They are soluble in water and contrasted with gums, soluble in organic solvents only.
