The microstructure and mechanical properties of concrete will degrade significantly at high temperatures, thus affecting the bond strength between reinforcing steel and surrounding concrete in reinforced concrete members. In this study, the effect of individual and hybrid fiber on the local bond-slip behavior of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) after exposure to elevated temperatures was experimentally investigated. Tests were conducted on local pullout specimens (150 mm cubes) with a reinforcing bar embedded in the center section. The embedment lengths of the pullout specimens were 4.2 times the bar diameter. The parameters investigated included concrete type (control group: ordinary LWAC; experimental group: fiber reinforced LWAC), concrete strength, fiber type, and targeted temperature. The test results showed that for medium-strength LWACs exposed to high temperatures, the use of only steel fibers did not significantly increase the residual bond strength. Moreover, the addition of individual and hybrid fiber had little effect on the residual bond strength of the high-strength LWAC after exposure to a temperature of 800℃.
An experimental study on the effects of temperature change on the impact damages of CFRP aminates was made through an observation of the interrelations between the Impact energy vs. delamination area, the impact energy vs. residual bending strength, and the delamination area vs. the decreasing of the residual bending strength for CF/EPOXY and CF/PEEK composite laminates subjected to FOD (Foreign Object Damage) under high temperatures.
A damage analysis simulator, which is applicable for evaluating the residual strength of damaged ship, was developed in this paper. For this process, CDM (Continuum Damage Mechanics) approach has been implemented to the simulator by virtue of the numerical technique for evaluation of crack initiation and/or enlargement. A damage calculation program has been linked with a commercial finite element analysis code (NASTRAN) and a ultimate strength evaluation program (LSAP) in order to assess residual strength of damaged ship. As a results of series calculation for the frigate model, giving the quantitative structural damage to the ultimate strength evaluation, a residual strength with damage is predicted to be at least 70 percentage lower than the case of intact condition. It was found that the proposed technique can be used as a design support tool in the field of simulation based ship design.
A weathered residual soil is a soil-like material derived from the in situ weathering and decomposition of rock which has not been transported from its original location. Undisturbed sampling of residual soils is extremely difficult, which has an important effect on investigating the strength and compression characteristics. Thus, a special undisturbed sampling device (direct shear box with shoe) was developed and undisturbed samples were successfully obtained for direct shear tests, Direct shear testing was conducted under unsoaked and soaked condition. As a result, the shear strength of soaked samples was less than that of unsoaked samples, and it was verified that direct shearing of undisturbed samples can evaluate reasonably the shear strength and the slope stability.
The characteristics of lightweight aggregate (LWA) with a low specific gravity and high water absorption will significantly change the properties of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC). This study aimed at exploring the effect of presoaking degree of LWA on the strength degeneracy of LWAC and flexural behavior of LWAC members exposed to elevated temperatures. The residual mechanical properties of the LWAC subjected to elevated temperatures were first conducted. Then, the residual load tests of LWAC members (beams and slabs) after exposure to elevated temperatures were carried out. The test results showed that with increasing temperature, the decreasing trend of elastic modulus for LWAC was considerably more serious than the compressive strength. Besides, the presoaking degree of LWA had a significant influence on the residual compressive strength and elastic modulus for LWAC after exposure to $800^{\circ}C$. Moreover, owing to different types of heating, the residual load bearing capacity of the slab specimens were significantly different from those of the beam specimens.
This paper deals with the residual strength characteristics of composite materials under the environment of high temperature and humidity. Two types of GFRP, one with unidirection and randomly oriented, are used to investigate the features of moisture absorption and the residual strength. The results show that, when exposed longterms in high temperature and humidity, the randomly oriented composites is more stable than the unidirection one.
In this paper, the effects of temperature change on the impact of CFRP laminates was experimentally studied. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CFRP orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces$[0_6^{\circ}/90_7^{\circ}]_s$ and four-interfaces$[0_3^{\circ}/90_6^{\circ}/0_3^{\circ}]_s$. The interrelations between the impact energy vs. delamination area, the impact energy vs. residual bending strength, and the interlayer delamination area vs. the decrease of the residual flexural strength of carbon fiber epoxy composite laminates subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage) under high temperatures were experimentally observed.
Major problems in welding Al-7020 include shrinkage, rpopositgy in welds and loss of strength in the heat affected zone. Thus it is important to examine the mechanical properties and reliability of welds. In this study, a series of experiments was carried out to determine the mechanical properties such as micro-hardness distribution, tensile strength, porosity and residual stress distribution of the Al-7020 weldment made by pulse-GMA welding. The resuts of the experiemnts are as folows. 1) The micro-hardness of weld metal and heat affected zone was lower than that of the base metal. 2) The tensile strength of the deposited metal was much lower than that of the base metal. 3) The porrosity in weld metal zone was negligible under the adopted conditsion of experiemnts. 4) The residual stress in the weld metal was lower than that of the heat affected zone, because the weld metal was softened. And the mciro-hardness distribution, the tensile strength and the residual stess distribution of the weldment in the as-welded condition were compared with those of the weldment after heat treatment.
Damage induced by low velocity impact loading in aircraft composite is the form of failure which is frequently occurred in aircraft. As the consequences of impact loading in composite laminates, matrix cracking, delamination and eventually fiber breakage for higher impact energies can be occurred. Even when no visible impact damage is observed, damage can exist inside of composite laminates and carrying load of the composite laminates is considerably reduced. The objective of this study is to evaluate and predict residual strength behavior of composite laminates by impact loading and for this, tensile test after impact was carried out on composite laminates made of woven CFRP.
Ring-stiffened cylinders are widely used as the pressure hull of submarines and underwater vehicles. For large ring-stiffened cylinders cylindrical shells are fbricated by cold rolling of flat plates and then welding of curved shells. After forming cylinders ring-stiffeners are welded on th the cylinders. Due to these cold roiling and welding initial shape imperfections and residual stresses exists in fabricated ring-stiffened cylinders. It is well known that the initial shape and material imperfections affect the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders significantly. In this paper previous researches on the effects of initial shape imperfections and residual stresses are briefly reviewed Recently a numerical analysis computer program was developed to predict the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure, which is based on the Dynamic Relaxation technique. This program was employed to numerically investigate those effects. The numerical predictions were substantiated with relevant experimental results.
