Purpose: Follicular lymphoma (FL) is an indolent non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that is highly sensitive to radiotherapy (RT). However, the effectiveness of RT has not been well established. We reviewed our experiences to assess the role of RT for FL and analyze treatment results. Materials and Methods: Retrospective analysis was done on 29 patients who received first RT between January 2003 and August 2013. Of 23 early stage (stage I, II) patients, 16 received RT alone, four received chemotherapy followed by RT, two received RT postoperatively, and one received salvage RT for relapse after resection. Six advanced-stage (stage III, IV) patients received RT after chemotherapy: two received consolidation RT, three received salvage RT for residual lesions, and one received RT for progressive sites. Median RT dose was 30.6 Gy (range, 21.6 to 48.6 Gy). Median follow-up duration was 62 months (range, 6 to 141 months). Results: All patients showed complete response in the radiation field. Eight outfield relapses were reported. Seven patients received salvage treatment (three chemotherapy, four RT). Four patients showed excellent responses, especially to RT. Estimated 5-year and 10-year relapse-free survivals were 72% and 60%. In the RT-alone group, 5-year relapse-free survival was 74.5%. All advanced-stage patients were disease-free with 100% 5-year overall survival. Disease-specific death was noted in only one patient; four others died of other unrelated causes. No significant toxicity was reported. Conclusion: RT resulted in excellent treatment outcomes for all FL stages when used as a primary treatment modality for early stage or salvage-treatment modality for advanced-stage disease.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of autogenous tooth graft materials after maxillary sinus bone grafts. Methods: The study involved 23 implants in 22 patients who visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Periodontics, Chosun University Dental Hospital, in 2008 and received autogenous tooth graft materials for maxillary sinus bone grafts. Results: For eight patients with maxillary bone graft materials prior to implant placement, the healing period averaged five months. For eleven patients with simultaneous maxillary bone graft and implant placement, eight patients received a second surgery, with an average healing time of six months. Three patients had a longer observation period with only a fixture implanted. Three patients who received only a bone graft required more time to implant placement because of the lack of residual bone and also for personal reasons. Only 5 patients had biopsies performed and complications such as infection and dehiscence healed well. The application of autogenous graft materials to the maxillary bone graft sites did not exert any significant effects on the success rates. When a mixture of graft materials was used, the post-surgical bone resorption rate was reduced. Histological analysis showed that new bone formation and remodeling were initiated during the three-to-six month healing period. Bone formation capacity increased continuously up to six months after the maxillary bone graft. Conclusion: According to this analysis, excellent stability and bone-forming capacity were seen in cases where autogenous materials were used alone or mixed with other materials. Autogenous tooth graft materials may be substituted instead of autogenous bones.
Objective: Standard cancer therapy prolongs survival, but can be detrimental to the quality of life, compromise the immune system, and leave residual disease that can cause recurrence years or decades in the future. Tumor dormancy therapy is a novel therapeutic approach that may improve these shortcomings, promote quality of life, and prolong survival. The aim of this study was to analyze studies on dormancy therapy, especially studies using traditional Oriental herbal medicine, so as to evaluate the efficacy of dormancy therapy with traditional oriental herbal medicine. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review using Scientific and Technical Information Integration Services (NDSL), PubMed, and RISS. We searched for clinical reports, papers, and books related to tumor metastasis, recurrence, immunotherapy, tumor dormancy, and traditional oriental herbal medicine with anticancer effects. Seventy-nine (79) experimental and clinical articles in both Korean and English were reviewed. This study was conducted from March 1, 2012 to May 31, 2012. Results: This approach, Tumor dormancy therapy, rather than seeking to remove the tumor, includes combination of low-dose chemotherapy, immunotherapy, immunosurveillance, and other methods to stabilize tumor growth and to enhance the host is immunity against disseminated tumor cells and thus to manage cancer as a chronic disease while maintaining quality of life. In particular, integrative use of Oriental herbal medicine has been shown to induce or maintain tumor dormancy, increase the effectiveness of conventional chemotherapy, improve quality of life, and prolong survival. Conclusion: Tumor dormancy therapy is a promising novel therapeutic approach that may be especially effective with Oriental herbal medicine. Further research is needed to determine its potential mechanisms and therapeutic applications.

Objective : The purpose of this study are to evaluate the effectiveness of Gamma Knife radiosurgery(GKS) as a treatment of craniopharyngioma and to investigate the proper dose planning technique in GKS for craniopharyngioma. Method : Between May 1992 and March 1999, seven Gamma Knife radiosurgical procedures were done for residual tumor mass of 6 patients with craniopharyngioma after microsurgical resection. Conventional radiation therapy was not performed. In this study, their clinical, radiological and radiosurgical data were analyzed and the radiation dosage to the optic pathway, hypothalamus, pituitary stalk, and cavernous sinus were calculated and correlation with clinical outcome was evaluated. The mean follow-up period was 33.5 months(12.3-55.2 months). Result : The mean tumor volume was 4.4cc(0.4-18.0cc) and the maximum radiation dose ranged from 14 to 32 Gy(mean 20.9Gy). The radiation was given with isodose curve, 50-90% and the marginal dose varied within 8-22.4Gy(mean 12.7Gy). The mean number of isocenter was 4.3(1-12). The tumor was well controlled in all cases. In 5 of 7 cases, the size of tumor decreased to 10-50% of pre-GKS volume and remaining two showed no volume change. The mean dose to optic pathway was 5.7Gy(5.1-11.2Gy) and there were no complications. Conclusion : GKS seems to be effective for control of craniopharyngioma as an adjuvant treatment after microsurgical resection and even suboptimal dose for tumor margin is considered to be enough for tumor control. It is safe with careful dose planning to protect surrounding important structures, especially optic pathway. We believe conventional radiation therapy should be avoided because it has limitation for dose planning of additional treatments such as radiosurgery or intracystic instillation of radioisotope in case of recurrence.

In this paper, a shared band transmission, in which downlink signals from satellite to both earth station and user terminal are transmitted in the same frequency band, is considered. For proper operation of such shared band transmission, self-interference caused by the transmitted signal from its own transmitter should be cancelled and the desired signal from the other transmitter should be obtained. The self-interference is sent by its own transmitter and it can be easily regenerated with the estimated round-trip delay. In addition to this delay, non-linearity effects caused by power amplifiers at the earth station and satellite should be exploited. The proposed interference canceller divided into two parts: one is subtraction of the transmitted signal with delay and non-linearity effects, and the other is adoptive filter to suppressed the residual interference. Through computer simulations, the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified.
A distinctive difference of hydrocarbon in crude oil and petroleum products exists. Depending on the origin where it comes from, crude oil shows its own unique pattern which is different from petroleum products containing characteristics according to their operating process and production period. A process of mixing behavior in a tank containing residual amounts of oil draws its own pattern when analysis is conducted. The analytical process described above is named oil fingerprint method. This study investigates an effectiveness of the method for comparing data sets produced by conventional gas chromatography with mass spectrometer (GC/MS) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC X GC) which is known as powerful new technology for chemical analysis.

Background: Spinal stenosis and herniated intervertebral discs are the principal causes of lumbosacral radiculopathy. This study was conducted to compare the therapeutic value and duration of pain relief of fluoroscopic guided transforaminal epidural steroid injections (TFESIs) in patients with refractory radicular leg pain. Methods: Between August 2006 and March 2007, 87 patients (H group: patients with herniated intervertebral disc, S group: patients with spinal stenosis) who met the inclusion criteria were treated with fluoroscopic guided TFESIs. Prior to treatment, the VAS and ODI scores were determine to evaluate the degree of pain and level of disability. The degree of pain relief was then assessed 1 month after treatment with the TFESIs and graded as excellent (no residual pain), good (improvement of pain symptoms by more than 50%), fair (improvement of pain symptoms by less than 50%) and Poor (no improvement of pain). In addition, the duration of pain relief was evaluated by regular outpatient visits for 6 months, and by telephone interviews after 6 months. Results: The H and S group both had excellet results at 1 month after treatment with TFESIs showing improvements of 44.1% and 20.8% respectively. However this difference was not significant between groups. In addition, a duration of pain relief greater than 6 months was achieved in 32.4% of the patients in the H group and 37.7% of those in the S group. Conclusions: TFESIs had a similar degree of therapeutic effectiveness and duration of pain relief in patients with spinal stenosis and herniated intervertebral discs.

The peroxone process overcomes many of the limitations associated with conventional and advanced water treatment systems using chlorine disinfection and ozone oxidation processes. Ozone and hydrogen peroxide generate highly reactive hydroxyl free radical which oxidize various organic compounds and has highly removal efficiency. The key issue to operate peroxone process is developing the method to achieve high process effectiveness when scavengers that inhibit generation of OH radicals or consume OH radicals are co-existing in the process. Also many studies, to minimize inorganic oxidative by-products such as bromate and to reduce disinfection by-products after chlorination behind peroxone process, are needed. And we should consider the excess residual hydrogen peroxide in the water. On-line instruments and control strategies need to be developed to ensure effective and robust operation under conditions of varying load. If problems above mentioned are solved, peroxone process will be applied diversely for water treatment.

A sensor fault detection and isolation scheme(SFDIS) is adopted to improve the reliability of direct torque controlled induction motor drives and the experimental results are discussed. Major contributions include: experimental analysis of a few important sensor faults. design and implementation of the proposed SFDIS, and the fault tolerant control system(FTCS). Although the adopted SFDIS employs only one observer for residual generation, the system has the function of fault isolation that only multiple observer schemes can have. To verify the performance of the proposed scheme, the speed control system is designed for the 2.2kW direct torque controlled Induction motor. Hardware of the control system consists of a control board using TMS320OVC33 and a power stack using IPM. Experimental results for various type of sensor faults show the effectiveness of the SFDIS and the FTCS.

Ameloblastoma is cytologically a benign tumor, but is clinically characterized by infiltrative growth and high recurrency. The criteria for surgical treatment of ameloblastoma has not yet established and it is generally accepted that ameloblastoma be treated differently based on clinical types. The purpose of this paper is to consider effectiveness of enucleation in large-sized intraosseous ameloblastoma that has treated more frequently by radical treatment. 39 cases of the intraosseous ameloblastomas were treated by enucleation in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery of Yonsei University, dental college from February 1990 to January 2001. 25 cases were selected because they were large in size that could produce facial disfigurement or pathologic fracture of jaws. They were radiographically characterized by the cortical bone that was expanded or eroded locally and histopathologically by 19 solid ameloblastomas and 6 intramural type of unicystic ameloblastomas. Among the 25 cases, 4 cases - 3 solid ameloblastomas and 1 intramural type of ameloblastoma - recurred. Recurrence rate was 16%. The compact bone which is not invaded by ameloblastoma was used as surgical margin of enucleation with accompanying chemical cauterization for killing the residual tumor cells. This may have been the reason for the low recurrence rate. So, it is considered that enucleation and long-term follow-up enable the large-sized intraosseous ameloblastomas that were characterized by almost destroyed cancellous bone and expanded or discontinued cortical bone to treat minimizing facial disfigurement and masticatory dysfunction and sociopsychological impact produced by radical treatment. I recommend that the large-sized intraosseous ameloblastomas without involvement to the surrounding soft tissues be first treated by enucleation.
