Methods: A total of 307 elderly women participated in this study were divided into one of three groups according to their family type: residing with spouse (RSP; n=88), residing with son or daughter (RSD; n=119), and residing alone (RAL; n=100). Chisquare test was used to assess dietary habits and health status of the subjects by the family types. Results: Results demonstrated significant associations between eating regular meals, person preparing meals, coffee intake, and bone fracture experience and family type. Among the three groups, the RSP and RAL groups had a higher percentage for preparing meals by themselves (p<0.001) than the RSD group. The RAL group had a lower percentage for eating regular meals (p<0.01) but a higher percentage for bone fracture experience (p<0.05) than the other groups. There were no significant differences in monthly allowance, self-estimated health status, physical activity, exercise, drinking, and dietary habits such as frequency of consumption of dairy, beans, eggs, fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables among the three groups. Conclusions: The results showed that elderly women residing alone without a son, daughter, or spouse had more diet-related and health problems such as irregular meals and high bone fracture experience. These findings suggested that elderly women residing alone need more attention and support.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes in patterns of Daegu- and Gyeongbuk-based patients' use of medical care facilities located in Seoul. The 'Patient Survey' data issued by the Ministry of Health and Welfare for 2002, 2005, and 2008 were used. Among all discharged patients residing in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, 133,456 who used medical facilities in Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and Seoul were selected. Among patients residing in Daegu, 2.2% used medical facilities in Seoul in 2002, 3.7% in 2005, and 3.5% in 2008. The corresponding rates among patients living in Gyeongbuk were 5.6%(2002), 7.1%(2005), and 7.3%(2008). Regarding the ICD-10 disease groups, the use of medical facilities in Seoul by patients residing in either Daegu or Gyeongbuk increased in 2005 right after the introduction of the KTX high-speed train service, covering various disease groups, but decreased again in 2008. 'Neoplasm' cases, however, showed a progressive rising trend during the years studied. Multivariate data analysis for the three years showed that sex, age, payment type, hospital type, residence, year, and disease groups were all significantly associated with the utilization of medical facilities in Seoul. The major results are : First, use of medical facilities in Seoul by Gyeongbuk patients was 2.4-fold higher than that by Daegu patients, but with respect to 2005 and 2008 vs. 2002, use of medical facilities in Seoul by Daegu resident patients' showed a larger increase than that by Gyeongbuk's patients. Second, for patients residing in the two regions, use of medical facilities in Seoul was highest for 'congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities', followed by 'neoplasms'. Third, for patients residing in the two regions, general hospitals comprise the primary factor in the use of medical facilities in Seoul. The study shows that local medical facilities should individually exert more efforts to improve the quality of their medical services. Relevant authorities should likewise help these facilities develop their own unique services and respective specialization.

  • This study was designed to compare the dietary habits of women's university students according to residence type. The subjects were 140 females divided into four groups. The first group consisted of students residing at home with their parents (home, n=39), the second group consisted of students residing in a dormitory (dormitory, n=34), the third group consisted of students residing in a boarding house (boarding, n=36), and the fourth group consisted of self-boarding students (self-boarding, n=31). The average age was 21.9 years, and the BMI levels of the groups were $20.8kg/m^2$, $19.6kg/m^2$, $20.5kg/m^2$, and $19.7kg/m^2$, respectively. The 'home' group had higher dietary regularity than the other groups (P<0.05). The boarding group and self-boarding group were more likely to eat out and skip breakfast than the home and dormitory groups (P<0.05). All groups indicated that frequency of snacking was higher than 1 time per day, but there was no significant difference between the groups. The dormitory and boarding groups spent less time consuming meals than the other groups. In conclusion, women's university students show different dietary behaviors according to residence type. Especially, the dormitory, boarding, and self-boarding groups need to improve their dietary habits through high quality education and nutritional support at college cafeterias.
