  • In 2004. as a part of special housing policy for low income household, Korean government initiated 'Multiple-dwelling Purchase and Public Rental Program'(MDPPRP) to help people whose needs for appropriate housing cannot be met in private housing market. The main goal of this program was to provide the base for self support of tenants by purchasing 'Multiple-housing' in bundle and transferring them into rental housing with low price to the low income tenants. Unlike other public rental housing programs, this model program limited the length of stay in the rental housing by six years to lead tenant's self support. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of this model program for further expanding enforcement. For this, two groups of residents of 'multiple-dwelling purchase and public rental program' and permanent rental housing were compared and analyzed. Thirty two tenants of MDPPRP were interviewed for the study. As research methods, document review, onsite tenant interviews using questionnaire were used. As a whole, most of the tenants were satisfied with their 'multiple-dwelling' environment in physical and socio-psychological aspects.

  • Objectives: Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is a kind of health promotion approach to increase social cohesion and sense of community, which has built the collaborated partnership in all phases. This has the co-ownership of research objectives and knowledges produced by residents, and the outcome was taken to enhance community empowerment. This study performed to embody CBPR, which had regulated collective health status approached by social epidemiology. Methods: Reference review had been exercised focused on CBPR books and papers published since 1990. Our interests were aimed at its paradigm and methodological issues. Particularly, we problematized its feasibility in the social and behavioral foundations of pubic health. Results: According to the review, CBPR shared critical understanding and decision-making related to their community development including health status. Therefore, it was strength-based approach in spite of scientific dichotomy. CBPR created social cohesion and community empowerment with all participants, because it sublated contradiction between subjectivism and objectivism. Conclusions: The success of CBPR needs what we so called trust, democracy, collaboration, devotion, and consensus of equity. Despite these factors, CBPR may be a methodological transition to prepare some intervention of health inequality. This is because it does emphasize a mixture of theory and praxis to manage vulnerable people in community.

  • The purpose of the study was to provide ground information to develop social adjustment programs for North Korean residents who might migrate into South Korea when free transmigration is allowed in the process of reunification. For this purpose, two research methods were employed. First, depth interviews for 10 North Korean defectors were used to find out their social adjustment realities and problems. In addition, empirical survey research was carried out with 397 subjects to identify South Koreans'altitude toward North Korean defectors and the willingness to support them financially and emotionally. North Korean defectors's social adjustment problems were approached based on lifestyle. The depth interviews revealed that difficulties the defectors had experienced at first were mainly in the aspect of consumption caused by lack of understanding about capitalism. However, they could overcome difficulties and assimilate their ways of living to those of South Koreans soon. Other adjustment problems in family living and child rearing especially related with values had more complicated issues. Results of the empirical survey showed that South Koreans' level of interest in defecters was moderate but they thought them rather positively, sympathetically. Concerning supports, South Koreans were agreeing with governmental support more with emotional support than financial support by individuals. In conclusion, present formal education programs provided to defectors were not effective enough for them to team South Korean living culture. To learn by living with interactions with South Koreans was one of the best policies to help defectors' adaptation. Findings that South Koreans were willing to help them emotionally matched and balanced with defectors' needs.

  • The research made a study of the spatial characteristics of $m\'{e}diath\'{e}ques$ based on the twelve case studies of the BMVRs constructed with the financial support of the government since 1992 in France. The $m\'{e}diath\'{e}que$ is the community center for local residents to collect information, to have relationship with others and to shape public opinions. Thus it should have easy accessibility, liberal flow plan and the diversity of the newest information. The architectural elements to offer these faculties are summarized as follows. Firstly, the $m\'{e}diath\'{e}que$ as the public facility should have the easy flow plan and the high recognition for visitors. Second, it should be the efficient space for both managers and visitors. thus, it should not need more managers or have the difficulty to move. Third, it should be planed to support the change of the form of information and the needs of the visitors. It, therefore, should have the wide space with no wall and divide the space by movable furnitures. Lastly, it should be the space with the natural light, and it does not need the special artificial lights like museums. It is considered that the planning of the $m\'{e}diath\'{e}que$ should be from the four principles. Additionally, the program of the $M\'{e}diath\'{e}que$ should reflect the each local traits.

  • The purpose of this study is to give some suggestions for the legal supplement of the regulation on the balcony expansion for the optimal use of apartment balcony. For the purpose, this study focused on the characteristics of spaces expanded to the balcony, in the plans supplied after the legalization of balcony expansion, comparing them by their location; the metropolitan area of Seoul Gyeonggi and the districts of the other areas. The 168 plans of apartments in the supplied by top 10 constructors in the metropolitan areas of Seoul and Gyeonggi, together with the 92 plans in the other smaller districts in 2006 to 2007 were analyzed with the tools of frequency and chi-square analysis. The result is as follows. (1) The region showed no difference in the plans of balcony; whereas the size, the position and access of the shelter explained some differences of balcony plan. (2) In wider plans, balconies were placed in all sides of plan-front, rear and side, and were remodeled to expand facing rooms. (3) The balcony expansion tended to increase the number of bays. (4) In almost cases, the living rooms were expanded to balcony. In smaller plans, the balconies were remodeled to supply supplementary kitchen space, splitting it from laundry. (5) The shelters were placed at the rear or side of plans, but the shelter facing room could be dangerous in case of fire. The balcony expansion, despite of legalization spirit to adopt diverse use of additional spaces for residents' needs, was only a tool for the space expansion. The amendment of the regulation is needed to accommodate these findings that the balconies should be identified by their function, that the front corridor-type balcony should be limited in length and magnitude, and that the shelter should be positioned with easy access.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate problems associated with the storehouse affiliated with rural housing for the elderly engaged in farming activities, and to suggest improvements with the examples of storehouse floor plans. The elderly in rural area still engage in farming even though they are suffering from aging problems. Therefore, the planning of storehouse which has relevance to agriculture is very important. The methods employed were a field survey and interviews with residents. 12 houses belonging to elderly people (60's and over) were selected by the convenient sampling in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do. The results are as follows. First, at least more than 3 storehouses have to be planned to store the goods separatedly according to their kinds and characteristics. Second, storehouses should be placed near or directly connected with the main house to support the accessibility of the elderly. Third, the open space has to be planned in front of the storehouse to park a truck for loading goods directly. Fourth, the storage equipments such as shelves should be planned inside of the storehouse for the space efficiency and user convenience. Fifth, the width of the door should be wide enough to carry agricultural products and goods. It is recommended to use double hinged doors or double pocket doors. Besides, the thresholds of the doors should be removed and, rather than using direct lighting system, it is better to use indirect lightings and task lightings together to minimize glare and to provide enough illumination.
