The quality of tap water on the whole water-supply system, from a large filtration plant to a private faucet, has to be guaranteed the standards of drinking water. At this point in time, however, the supply process of the tap water has not been monitored and managed scientifically. The piped water, especially the most small-scale reservoirs(underground or overhead type) are always exposed to various contaminations and impurities. Recently monitoring systems of water-quality were spread on some large filtration plants or distributing reservoirs. In particular, the water quality monitoring method using the internet is adopted into some local government whose inhabitants can check up the water quality anytime and anywhere. The construction of this system that has to apply a large scale needs, and has a limitation on the small water-supply system, such as apartments, public facilities and small-scale underground or overhead reservoirs. In this work, we suggest the integration system of individual water-quality sensor modules that have a low price. By using the developed integration system and monitoring program operated on the internet, the system managers of reservoirs can monitor and manage water-quality characteristic values of drinking water in online. Since the proposed system was modularized, the system can be applied easily into various reservoirs with a low cost and regardless of its scale, small or large.
According to the "Safety Evaluation Detailed Instructions (Dam)", precise safety inspection is carried out for dams that exceed a certain scale. However, as the Hydrological Safety Evaluation from various evaluation standards is designed to evaluate the safety of existing dams considering PMF, the evaluation is much less applicable for most agricultural reservoirs. Therefore, the Hydrological Safety Guidelines for agricultural reservoirs are expected to be re-evaluated considering the diverse risk factors with the coefficient model and AHP in this study. The coefficient model has been developed by selecting the hydrological safety superordinate subordinate evaluation factors to reflect diverse risk factors of agricultural reservoirs. After calculating the sum of indicators score for each evaluation factors, validation procedures were performed for the questionnaire which a panel answered. The practical coefficient has eventually been estimated for the hydrological safety evaluation considering the diverse risk factors. The conclusions acquired based on the study done are that both most agricultural reservoirs were classified as flood defense capability is insufficient and agricultural reservoirs which meet embankment-freeboard standards considering PMF was overestimated.

Recently, eutrophication or lake and reservoir has become serious problem to man who want use that water for several purpose. In order to solve the eutrophication problem, the trophic state of that eutrophic lake and reservoir should be measured properly. For the purpose of this, various method to indicate the trophic state of lake and reservoir was developed by many researchers. This research was conducted to evaluate characteristics and eutrophication of water qualitymfor small scale reservoir in Kunsan. On-site investigation to 5 reservoirs and laboratory experiment were carried out during four seasons from November, 2003 to July, 2004. Twelve items measured field ana a laboratory. Measured data was analyzed to quantitative method by multivariate approach and eutrophication index. The result is summarized as following. 1) Showing the characteristics of water quality for reservoir in Kunsan, Okgu reservoir and Oknua reservoir was exceeded 4 grades of agricultural water standard in TP, TN and COD. This means that eutrophication was gone much, therefore, water-purity control of reservoir need. While, Mije reservoir that is used to Kunsan citizens' recreation was good in water quality. But, water quality exceeded 4 grades of agricultural Dater standard sometimes. 2) As a results of correlation analysis between variables of water qualify, Interrelation between variables which is connected with eutrophication was expressed good relationship as above 6.000 in correlation coefficients. The correlation coefficient(r) between COD and chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a, total nitrogen and chlorophyll-a were 0.750, 0.720 and 0.600 respectively. Therefore, Change of water quality can grasp according to eutrophication progress degree. 3) If do evaluate to eutrophication by quantitative method which is proposed by OECD, US-EPA and Forsberg & Ryding, in the case of chlorophyll a, Okgu, Oknua and Daewi reservoir was eutrophic state and Mije and Geumgul reservoir was mesotrophic state. But, estimation by TN and TP showed highly eutrophic state (hypereutrophic) in all reservoirs. 4) If do evaluate by eutrophication index which is Carlson's TSI, revised carlson TSI and Walker's index, in the case of chlorophyll a, TSI values of Okgu, Oknua and Daewi reservoir is eutrophic state more than 50 and Mije and Geumgul reservoir was mesotrophic state as range of $40{\sim}50$ in TSI value. But, in the case of TP as nutrients, all reservoirs showed highly eutrophic state which was exceed to 70 in TSI value. According to above results, the water quality for small scale reservoirs in Kunsan is progressing by trophic state. therefore, for continuous use as agriculture water, we had better do establishment of management plan about water quality.
The purpose of this study was to monitor the stream flow of rural streams for investigating the status of stream depletion located downstream of irrigation reservoir. Bonghyun and Hai reservoirs area, located in Hai-myeon, the city of Gosung, Gyeongsangnam Province, were selected for study watersheds and streams. Stream flow monitoring was conducted 7 times from March to September, 2011. Stream flow was measured for 8 stations downstream from two reservoirs. The stream depletion was found in most of the downstream of reservoirs for the non-irrigation period and even in the irrigation period when there were a lot of antecedent precipitation. The correlation analysis for water quality data indicated that the correlation between BOD and T-N was highest for the reservoirs. The correlation between BOD, T-N, and turbidity was high for Hai reservoir and Bonghyeon reservoir. Continuous monitoring for rural streams located in downstream of reservoirs are required to quantify the status of stream flow depletion and determine the amount of environmental flows.

This study analyzes the economic effect of rehabilitation and upgrading of reservoirs as a prevented method against natural disasters under recent abnormal weather conditions and dam-break. For the analysis, we divide the purpose of rehabilitation and upgrading of reservoirs into the stable supply of rural water under uncertain weather conditions and the prevention of collapse due to the aging of the reservoir. We measure the economic effect of rehabilitation and upgrading of reservoirs by estimating the resident's willingness-to-pay for the project through Contingent Valuation Method(CVM). The result shows that distributions of willingness-to-pay to prevent natural disasters and dam-break are similar to each other. About 66% of the residents in sample regions are willing to pay for the project. The resident's willingness-to-pay to protect natural disasters and dam-break are 32,250 to 46,147 won and 28,427 to 47,308 won respectively on average for all sample regions. The comparison of willingness-to-pay by type of regions shows that paddy field areas are the highest followed by facility cultivation areas and urban areas. In addition, total expected value of the projects calculated based on the resident's willingness-to-pay for paddy field areas and facility cultivation areas are much larger than actual project costs. This implies that rural residents are fully aware of the importance of the project to prevent natural disasters and dam-break and are willing to pay for additional costs if needed.
Due to climate change the sustainable water resources management of agricultural reservoirs, the largest number of reservoirs in Korea, has become important. However, the DIROM, rainfall-runoff model for calculating agricultural reservoir inflow, has used regression equation developed in the 1980s. This study has optimized the parameters of the DIROM using the genetic algorithm (GA) based on historical inflow data for some agricultural reservoirs that recently begun to observe inflow data. The result showed that the error between the historical inflow and simulated inflow using the optimal parameters was decreased by about 80% compared with the annual inflow with the existing parameters. The correlation coefficient and root mean square error with the historical inflow increased to 0.64 and decreased to 28.2 × 103 ㎥, respectively. As a result, if the DIROM uses the optimal parameters based on the historical inflow of agricultural reservoirs, it will be possible to calculate the long-term reservoir inflow with high accuracy. This study will contribute to future research using the historical inflow of agricultural reservoirs and improvement of the rainfall-runoff model parameters. Furthermore, the reliable long-term inflow data will support for sustainable reservoir management and agricultural water supply.
Understanding the pore structure including pore shape and connectivity in unconventional reservoirs is essential to increase the recovery rate of unconventional energy resources such as shale gas and oil. In this study, we found analysis condition to probe the nanoscale pore structure in shale reservoirs using Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and Ion Milling System (IMS). A-068 core samples from Liard Basin are used to probe the pore structure in shale reservoirs. The pore structure is analyzed with different pretreatment methods and analysis condition because each sample has different characteristics. The results show that surface milling by FIB is effective to obtain pore images of several micrometers local area while milling a large-area by IMS is efficient to observe various pore structure in a short time. Especially, it was confirmed that the pore structure of rocks with high content of carbonate minerals and high strength can be observed with milling by IMS. In this study, the analysis condition and process for observing the pore structure in the shale reservoirs is established. Further studies are needed to perform for probing the effect of pore size and shape on the enhancement of shale gas recovery.
We collected zooplankton from May to October, 2011, with the aim of understanding the zooplankton community distribution and food web interaction between the open water and littoral (aquatic plants) zones in two small reservoirs with different land covers (Sobudang, Myeongdong). Small-sized reservoirs are more abundant in South Korea, and a total of 51 and 65 species of zooplankton were identified at the two small reservoir (Sobudang and Myeongdong), where zooplankton densities were more abundant in the littoral zone than in the open water zone. Cladocerans and copepods densities were also higher in the littoral zone, in contrast, rotifers showed higher densities in the open water zone (t-test, P/0.05). Epiphytic zooplankton dominated at the littoral zone (Lecane, Monostyla, Alona and Chydorus) because aquatic plants provided refuge spaces for attachment. Some rotifers (e.g. Brachionus, Keratella and Polyarthra) were more abundant in the open water zone because of their small size, which might help them to go unnoticed by predators. In two-way ANOVA, rotifers related to two reservoirs or habitat space (littoral zone and open water zone), but cladocerans and copepods showed a statistically significant relationship on only two reservoirs. The results of stable isotope analysis showed that zooplankton in the littoral zone tended to depend on organic matter attached to aquatic plants as a food source, which indicates the avoidance of competition of zooplankton with other macro-invertebrates (e.g. Damselfly larva, Cybister brevis and Neocardina denticulate). As a result, zooplankton community distribution is determined by not only habitat space (aquatic plant zone and open water zone) but also by food source (phytoplankton).
With the increasing trend of extreme rainfall that exceeds the design frequency of man-made structures due to extreme weather, it is necessary to review the safety of agricultural reservoirs designed in the past. However, there are no local government-managed reservoirs (13,685) that can be discharged in an emergency, except for reservoirs over a certain size under the jurisdiction of the Korea Rural Affairs Corporation. In this case, it is important to quickly deploy a mobile siphon to the site for preliminary discharge, and this study evaluated the applicability of a mobile siphon with a diameter of 200 mm, a minimum water level difference of 6 m, 420 (m2/h), and 10,000 (m2/day), which can perform both preliminary and emergency discharge functions, to the Yugum Reservoir in Gyeongju City. The test bed, Yugum Reservoir, is a facility that was completed in 1945 and has been in use for about 78 years. According to the hydrological stability analysis, the lowest height of the current dam crest section is 27.15 (EL.m), which is 0.29m lower than the reviewed flood level of 27.44 (EL.m), indicating that there is a possibility of lunar flow through the embankment, and the headroom is insufficient by 1.72 m, so it was reviewed as not securing hydrological safety. The water level-volume curve was arbitrarily derived because it was difficult to clearly establish the water level-flow relationship curve of the reservoir since the water level-flow measurement was not carried out regularly, and based on the derived curve, the algorithm for operating small and medium-sized old reservoirs was developed to consider the pre-discharge time, the amount of spillway discharge, and to predict the reservoir lunar flow time according to the flood volume by frequency, thereby securing evacuation time in advance and reducing the risk of collapse. Based on one row of 200 mm diameter mobile siphons, the optimal pre-discharge time to secure evacuation time (about 1 hour) while maintaining 80% of the upper limit water level (about 30,000 m2) during a 30-year flood was analyzed to be 12 hours earlier. If the pre-discharge technology utilizing siphons for small and medium-sized old reservoirs and the algorithm for reservoir operation are implemented in advance in case of abnormal weather and the decision-making of managers is supported, it is possible to secure the safety of residents in the risk area of reservoir collapse, resolve the anxiety of residents through the establishment of a support system for evacuating residents, and reduce risk factors by providing risk avoidance measures in the event of a reservoir risk situation.
