With rapid economic development, the emphasis of the public health movement in Korea has shifted towards addressing the burden of chronic disease. With this shift in direction comes a greater focus on health behaviour and the need for planning models to assist in lifestyle modification programs. The Health Belief Model (HBM), which originated in the US, has generated more research than any other theoretical approach to describe and predict the health behaviour of individuals. In recent years it has been applied in many different cultures and modifications have been suggested to accommodate different cultures. Given the centrality of language and culture, any attempts to use models of health behaviour developed in a different culture, must be studied and tested for local applicability. The paper reviews the applicability and suitability of the HBM in Korea, in the context of the Korean language and culture. The HBM has been used in Korea for almost three decades. The predictability of the HBM has varied in Korean studies as in other cultures. Overall, this literature review indicates that the HBM has been found applicable in predicting health and illness behaviours by Korean people. However if the HBM is used in a Korean context, the acquisition of health knowledge is an important consideration. Most new knowledge in the health sciences is originally published in English and less frequently in another foreign language. Most health knowledge in Korea is acquired through the media or from health professionals and its acquisition often involves translation from the original. The selection of articles for translation and the accuracy of translation into language acceptable in the Korean culture become important determinants of health knowledge. As such translation becomes an important part of the context of the HBM. In this paper modifications to the HBM are suggested to accommodate the issues of language and knowledge in Korea.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a Korean version of the Falls Efficacy Scale (K-FES), which is used to measure the fear of falling, that is conceptually equivalent to the original and culturally adaptable to the Korean population. Methods: A five-step translation and adaptation process was employed to create the K-FES, adhering to the established guidelines for cross-cultural rehabilitation outcome measures. The content validity was then evaluated by 22 rehabilitation professionals (15 males and 7 females) with an average clinical experience of 201 months at neurological rehabilitation centers. The content validity ratio and index were used as a basis for judgment. Results: The translation process identified inconsistencies with the terms "objects" and "telephone" in the original Falls Efficacy Scale, which were subsequently resolved in the final K-FES version. The content validity ratios for the original, second, and third versions of the K-FES ranged from -0.27-0.91, -0.27-0.91, and -0.27-0.91, respectively. Correspondingly, the content validity index values for the original, second, and third versions of the K-FES ranged from 0.77-1.00, 0.68-1.00, and 0.63-1.00, respectively. Conclusions: The K-FES was rigorously developed through translation, adaptation, and validation processes, making it a reliable tool for Korean stroke rehabilitation professionals. It is expected to be instrumental in clinical and research settings to assess postural stability and fall risk in patients with strokes and brain injuries.

In the Republic of Korea, people with hearing impairments are the second-largest demographic within the registered disability community, following those with physical disabilities. Despite this demographic significance, research on sign language translation technology is limited due to several reasons including the limited market size and the lack of adequately annotated datasets. Despite the difficulties, a few researchers continue to improve the performacne of sign language translation technologies by employing the recent advance of deep learning, for example, the transformer architecture, as the transformer-based models have demonstrated noteworthy performance in tasks such as action recognition and video classification. This study focuses on enhancing the recognition performance of sign language translation by combining transformers with 3D-CNN. Through experimental evaluations using the PHOENIX-Wether-2014T dataset [1], we show that the proposed model exhibits comparable performance to existing models in terms of Floating Point Operations Per Second (FLOPs).

This paper proposes a face recognition method based on modified Otsu binarization, Hu moment and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Proposed method is robust to brightness, contrast, scale, rotation, and translation changes. Modified Otsu binarization can make binary images that have the invariant characteristic in brightness and contrast changes. From edge and multi-level binary images obtained by the threshold method, we compute the 17 dimensional Hu moment and then extract feature vector using LDA algorithm. Especially, our face recognition system is robust to scale, rotation, and translation changes because of using Hu moment. Experimental results showed that our method had almost a superior performance compared with the conventional well-known principal component analysis (PCA) and the method combined PCA and LDA in the perspective of brightness, contrast, scale, rotation, and translation changes with Olivetti Research Laboratory (ORL) database and the AR database.
Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to analyze and evaluate prior studies published in Korea on the cardiovascular disease-related quality of life, in order to make recommendations for further research. Methods: A total of 15 studies were selected from four databases(Digital library of Research Information Center for Health, Korea Medical Database, MedRic, and National Assembly Library). The selected studies were analyzed according to criteria, such as diagnosis/operation, used instrument, generic/specific instrument, dimension of quality of life, translation/ back-translation, sample size, reliability, validity, responsiveness, number of items, type of scale, time required, and independent variables. Results: Of the 15 cardiovascular disease-related quality of life studies, approximately half of them were conducted with hypertension or ischemic heart disease patients. All studies asserted that the concept of quality of life had multidimensional attributes. With respect to the questionnaire used for measuring the quality of life, only one study used a cardiovascular disease specific-instrument and most studies did not consider whether or not the validity of their instrument had been established. In addition, when using questionnaires developed in other languages, only one study employed a translation/back-translation technique. The types of variables tested for their influence on quality of life were quite limited. Conclusion: It is recommended to develop a reliability and validity established cardiovascular disease specific-quality of life for Korean patients and to identify associated new variables.
Quality estimation (QE) can evaluate the quality of machine translation output even for those who do not know the target language, and its high utilization highlights the need for QE. QE shared task is held every year at Conference on Machine Translation (WMT), and recently, researches applying Pretrained Language Model (PLM) are mainly being conducted. In this paper, we conduct a survey on the QE task and research trends, and we summarize the features of PLM. In addition, we used a multilingual BART model that has not yet been utilized and performed comparative analysis with the existing studies such as XLM, multilingual BERT, and XLM-RoBERTa. As a result of the experiment, we confirmed which PLM was most effective when applied to QE, and saw the possibility of applying the multilingual BART model to the QE task.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the tendency of the research on the traditional scenery architecture based on the old literature for the last 10 years and to suggest direction of the research on the traditional scenery through utilization of the old literature. For the tendency analysis of the research on the traditional scenery, I investigated and analyzed researches published in the Journal of the Korean Institute of Traditional Landscape Architecture between 2002 and 2012, and reviewed the utilization of the old literature about research on the traditional scenery. The number of the research papers through the old literature was two or three a year by 2009, but has increased to more than eight from 2010. The utilization tendency of the old literature was mostly to use the Korean translations or to use a collection of an individual's works after partially translating. As some of the researches were carried out only through translations even when they used the original, historical evidence on the translation of the original was insufficient. I can suggest the direction of the research on the traditional scenery by the results as follows: it is necessary to present both translation and the original and to specify the source of translation, for the efficient understanding and verification of the original. Professional translation of landscape architecture and scenery also seems to be necessary for the records of the current state. For the analysis of the old literature, as the analysis of the traditional scenery both through poetry and records facilitates assumption of the location of landscape by the abundant data, it seems to be necessary to approach research, using poetry and prose complementarily, after preparing foundation of research based on the records.
Inflammation is one mechanism through which cancer is initiated and progresses, and is implicated in the etiology of other conditions that affect cancer risk and prognosis, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and visceral obesity. Emerging human evidence, primarily epidemiological, suggests that walnuts impact risk of these chronic diseases via inflammation. The published literature documents associations between walnut consumption and reduced risk of cancer, and mortality from cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, particularly within the context of the Mediterranean Diet. While encouraging, follow-up in human intervention trials is needed to better elucidate any potential cancer prevention effect of walnuts, per se. In humans, the far-reaching positive effects of a plant-based diet that includes walnuts may be the most critical message for the public. Indeed, appropriate translation of nutrition research is essential for facilitating healthful consumer dietary behavior. This paper will explore the translation and application of human evidence regarding connections with cancer and biomarkers of inflammation to the development of dietary guidance for the public and individualized dietary advice. Strategies for encouraging dietary patterns that may reduce cancer risk will be explored.
The numbers of books, news articles, and documentary films on whales and dolphins have increased dramatically in Korea. The translation of 37 species with established Korean names, as reviewed and reported by Sohn et al. (2012), Kim et al. (2010), and Kim et al. (2013) in those books and public media, was not a problem. However, 52 cetacean species, which do not have proper Korean names, have been translated into Korean, causing confusion in the public. This short note suggests Korean translations for common names that have no Korean names based on the origins of the English common names, recent scientific information, and books on cetaceans.
