Phenolic Compounds Obtained from Stems of Couepia ulei with the Potential to Induce Quinone Reductase

  • Activity-guided fractionation of the EtOAc-soluble extract of the stems of Couepia ulei, using a bioassay based on the induction of quinone reductase (QR) in cultured Hepa 1c1c7 mouse hepatoma cells led to the isolation of two active compounds, a new natural product, erythro-2,3-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3-ethoxypropan-1-o1 (1), and a known compound, evofolin-B (2), along with five inactive compounds all of known structure, viz., betulinic acid, oleanolic acid, pomolic acid, ($\pm$)-syringaresinol, and ursolic acid. These isolates were identified by analysis of physical and spectral data. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited QR inducing activity, with observed CD (concentration required to double induction) values of 16.7 and 16.4 $\mu\textrm{M}$, respectively.

  • A 8-year-old, castrated male Maltese with difficulty in opening his mouth was presented. Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) was diagnosed by 2M antibody test. After treatment of MMM with corticosteroids, range of jaw motion improved and was almost normal at 5 months. In dogs with MMM, early detection and aggressive immunosuppressive therapy are required to improve the prognosis.

Arsenite induces premature senescence via p53/p21 pathway as a result of DNA damage in human malignant glioblastoma cells

  • In this study, we investigate whether arsenite-induced DNA damage leads to p53-dependent premature senescence using human glioblastoma cells with p53-wild type (U87MG-neo) and p53 deficient (U87MG-E6). A dose dependent relationship between arsenite and reduced cell growth is demonstrated, as well as induced ${\gamma}H2AX$ foci formation in both U87MG-neo and U87MG-E6 cells at low concentrations of arsenite. Senescence was induced by arsenite with senescence-associated ${\beta}$-galactosidase staining. Dimethyl- and trimethyl-lysine 9 of histone H3 (H3DMK9 and H3TMK9) foci formation was accompanied by p21 accumulation only in U87MG-neo but not in U87MG-E6 cells. This suggests that arsenite induces premature senescence as a result of DNA damage with heterochromatin forming through a p53/p21 dependent pathway. p21 and p53 siRNA consistently decreased H3TMK9 foci formation in U87M G-neo but not in U87MG-E6 cells after arsenite treatment. Taken together, arsenite reduces cell growth independently of p53 and induces premature senescence via p53/p21-dependent pathway following DNA damage.

A Survey on the Current Status of Human Research Protection Program Settlement and Subject Protection Activities in Korea (국내 임상시험 및 대상자 보호프로그램 도입 현황과 안전관 리체계에 대한 설문조사 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the status of the Human research Protection Program (HRPP) within a hospital or a research institute in Korea. Methods: Survey was conducted during June 12th-21th 2019. Survey was distributed to the members of Korean Association of IRB (KAIRB) through each IRB office. Descriptive statistics were performed using SPSS ver. 26. Results: A total of 86 people responded, and 75 (87.0%) answered that they have perceived the HRPP. Seventy out of 86 respondents (81.4%) were conducting internal audit, several institutions were operated simultaneously the other form of audits such as IRB audit, system audit. Regarding the management of Suspected Unexpected Serious Adverse Reaction (SUSAR), 62.8% answered that they have regulation that can decide to suspend the study when there is a risk to subject safety. Among the respondents, 66.3% performed 'Help desk.' Conclusion: In this study, we assessed the current status of HRPP operation at each research institution based on Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) HRPP guidelines. The HRPP accredited institution operated the subject protection activities according to this program, and even if the HRPP was not officially operated, the related activities were conducted focusing on the cases that could have a significant impact on the safety of research subjects. In order to ensure the quality of domestic clinical trials and to stably establish the HRPP, efforts at the individual institution level will be required.

Development of program for herd health management by milk components analysis of dairy cows (젖소에서 유성분 분석을 통한 우군 건강관리프로그램의 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develope a computer program to help with gross diagnosis of protein-energy balance and feeding management practice and with the prediction about the risk possibility of productive disease such as reproductive and metabolic disorders by evaluating fat, protein, and milk urea nitrogen (MUN) from individual cow milk in dairy herd Somatic cell counts also represent the condition of udder health. The principal flow charts of this program was to check on herd management, sampling the composite milk, analysis the milk composition, conversion of data from milking equipment to program, input and analysis of data in program, and report. This program is compatible with window 95/98 system. The major analytical elements of this program were presented as; the profile of herd lactation curve analysis of the test-day milk production level, the distribution of somatic cell count, the fat to protein ratio to evaluate body energy balance, and the interpretation of dietary protein-energy balance by milk protein and MUN contents for individual cows. This program using milk fat, protein, MUN, and somatic cell counts will serve as a monitoring tool for the protein-energy balance and the feeding management practice, and for distribution of mastitis in individual cows. It will also be used to manage the nutritional and reproductive disorders and mastitis at the farm level.

  • A space launch vehicle system represents a typical example of large-scale multi-disciplinary systems, consisting of subsystems such as mechanical structure, electronics, control, telecommunication, propulsion, material engineering etc. A lot of cost is required to develop the launch vehicle system. A precise planning of R&D cost is very essential to make a success of the launch vehicle development program. Especially in the early development phase of a new space launch vehicle system, cost estimation techniques and analogy from past similar development data are very useful methods to estimate a development cost of the launch vehicle system. Now Korea Aerospace Research Institute is in charge of the KSLV-I (Korea Space Launch Vehicle-I) Program that is a part of Korea National Space program. KSLV-I Program is a national undertaking to develop launch capabilities to deliver science satellites of a 100kg-class into a low earth orbit. It is hereafter, going to plan to develop a new korean space launch vehicle. In this paper, first the development costs of well-known launch vehicles in the world are presented to provide a reference to make a development plan of a new launch vehicle. Second this paper introduces the present status of cost estimation applications at NASA. Finally this paper presents the results from application of a TRANSCOST, a parametric cost model, to derive a cost estimate of a new launch vehicle development, as an example.

  • A computation program has been developed for automatic data processing in the calibration process of gamma survey meter. The automatic processing program has been developed based on Visual Basic. The program has been coded according to steps of calibration procedure. The OLE(object linking an embedding) Excel automation method fur automatic data processing is used in this program, which is a kind of programming technique for the Excel control. The performance test on the basis of reference data has been carried out by using the developed program. In the results of performance test, the values of calibration factors and uncertainties by the developed program were equal to those obtained from the reference data. In addition, It was revealed that the efficiency and precision of working are significantly increased by using the developed program.

  • There has been researches for effective education. Among them, many researchers are striving to apply Zone of Proximal Development of Vygotsky which is emphasizing the social interaction in the field of teaching and learning. Researchers usually research based on individual or small group of students. However the math class in school relies on system that one teacher teach many students in reality. So this research will look for the effect that the teaching and learning program based on Zone of Proximal Development of Vygotsky by designing the teaching and learning program which is based on scaffolding structuring to overcome the zone of proximal development in many-students class. The results of this research are as follows: First, the studying program considered the theory of Vygotsky has a positive effect on improving the mathematical achievement of elementary student. Second, the studying program considered the theory of Vygotsky has a positive effect on improving the student's studying attitude upon mathematics.

  • This study focuses on establishing theoretically-reasonable framework of evaluation areas and items for the informatization program and analyzing the weights for each area and item by means of the AHP. To obtain the goal of this research, firstly, based on broadly reviewing previous literature and logical reasoning, the evaluation criteria were Identified and conceptualized, which were 3 evaluation phases, 5 evaluation areas, and 22 evaluation items. Secondly, The data used for calculating the weight values for the evaluation criteria were collected from 48 academic and practical experts in the field of the informatization program promotion using internet survey. Thirdly, the relative weights among evaluation phases, evaluation areas, and its items were derived by AHP analysis. The findings of this study are thought not only to be useful as a practical guideline in performing evaluating the informatization program but also to provide significant basis for constructing the theoretical framework of evaluating method and management of the informatization program.

  • Work breakdown structure is a central element in project management and systems engineering. Composing a quality work breakdown structure is essential for the success of any project. In this paper, extensive use of work breakdown structure during phase one of KSLV-II launch vehicle development program is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of applying WBS-centric program and systems engineering management to the project are reviewed.
