Research on Mathematics Education in China: A Review of Doctoral Theses

  • This paper presents a survey study aiming to systematically review research on mathematics education in China and identify important variables that should be considered in future research. The literature surveyed is selected from doctoral theses. The study reveals that important progress has been made over the last two decades. Following the review and discussion, the study proposes five needed directions for advancing research on mathematics education in China.

비판적 수학교육에 대한 문헌 분석 연구 (A literature research on critical mathematics education)

  • This study is a literature research on critical mathematics education. In this study, we analyzed the literature about critical theory and critical education, especially focused on Freire's educational works. And also, we reviewed studies and lesson examples about critical mathematics education. The purpose of this research is to improve understanding about critical mathematics education. We found the connection between the goals, teaching methods and contents of critical mathematics education and Freire's theory of critical pedagogy. Critical mathematics lessons stimulated student's sense of social agency and induced student's inquiry. Critical mathematics education has a merit on aspect of mathematical connection and communication by adopting social issues and student's discussion in mathematics lessons. Although there are many obstacles to overcome, critical mathematics education is one of the educational direction to seek.

국내 수학 교사교육 연구의 동향 분석: 2000년 이후 게재된 한국수학교육학회의 학술지 논문을 중심으로 (Domestic research trends of mathematics teacher education: Focused on the journals published since 2000 by the Korean Society of Mathematics Education)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the trends of domestic research on mathematics teacher education in terms of the period, topics, methods, subjects, and mathematics content strands. For this purpose, a total of 220 research articles dealing with mathematics teacher education were analyzed, which have been published since 2000 by the Korean Society of Mathematics Education in the three journals: (a) The Mathematical Education; (b) Education of Primary School Mathematics; and (c) Communications of Mathematical Education. Regarding the period when the research was conducted, the number of articles on mathematics teacher education has been rapidly increased since the late 2000s. Regarding the topics, research on teacher orientation has been the most frequent topic and the studies dealing with professional development for teachers, teaching practices, or teacher knowledge tend to be popular. Regarding methods, survey and case study have been most frequently employed in studying mathematics teacher education. Regarding subjects, the main participants were in-service teachers, pre-service teachers, elementary school teachers, and secondary school teachers, respectively, who were in charge of a regular class. Finally, regarding mathematics content strands, previous studies on mathematics teacher education were not specific to mathematics content strands. Given these results, this paper closes with important implications for future research directions on mathematics teacher education in Korea.

수학교육 형평성에 관한 문헌 연구 (Equity in School Mathematics Education: A Review of the Literature)

  • 수학교육 형평성은 문화, 인종 등과 같은 요인으로 야기되는 사회적 불평등과 수학교육의 관계에 주목한다. 수학교육 형평성은 최근 수학교육의 중요한 화두 중 하나로 인지되고 있으며, 미래 사회를 위한 수학교육의 방향을 설정하는 중요한 근거가 될 수 있다. 이에 본 문헌 연구에서는 국내외 선행연구를 검토하여 국내 수학교육 연구에 유의미한 시사점을 제공하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 국내외 195편의 문헌을 검토하여 수학교육 형평성의 개념과 의의를 분석하였다. 문헌 검토를 위해 본 연구에서는 연구 문제를 중심으로 선정된 선행연구를 범주화하여 수학교육 형평성과 관련한 기존 논의를 정리하였다. 이때 수학교육 형평성에 관한 연구 문제는 수학 교사, 수학교육과정, 수학 교실, 수학 평가, 수학 교실을 둘러싼 사회·문화적 배경으로 구분하였다. 본 연구의 분석 결과는 수학교육 형평성에 관해 국내외에 논의된 내용을 확인할 기회를 넘어 국내 수학교육 연구자에게 새로운 연구 방향과 방법을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

대학 수학교육 연구의 동향과 과제 (Research Trends and Tasks in Collegiate Mathematics Education)

  • In this paper, we present a review of research perspectives and investigations in collegiate mathematics education from the four decades of development in the journal published by Korea Society of Mathematical Education. Research of mathematics education at the tertiary level, which had been a minor area in mathematics education, has made a significant development in the last decade in Europe md U.S.A. In this context, international journals for research in mathematics education were selected to comparatively examine and identify research trends and tasks in collegiate mathematics education. Based on the analysis of domestic at international journals, we present recommendations for further the development of Korean collegiate mathematics education research. First it is necessary to diversify the topics of educational research. Korean research of mathematics education at the tertiary level has been limited to the issues of curriculum developments, teacher education and computer technology. It is necessary to pursue more various topics such as conceptual development mathematical attitude and belief gender, socio-cultural aspect of teaching and teaming mathematics. Second, it is necessary to apply research methods for systematic investigations. It is important to note that international research of mathematics education introduces variety of research methods such as observation, interview, and survey in order to develop grounded theory of mathematics education. We end with pedagogical implications of the analyses presented and general conclusions concerning the perspectives for the future in collegiate mathematics education.

사회정의를 위한 수학교육의 연구 동향 (Research Trends of Mathematics Education for Social Justice)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 사회정의를 위한 수학교육의 국내외 연구 동향을 알아보고 우리나라 수학교육에 주는 시사점을 제시하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 사회정의를 위한 수학교육에 대한 국내외 연구 동향을 알아보기 위하여 선행 연구들을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 사회정의에 대한 국외의 연구는 1960년대 말부터 Freire의 비판적 수학교육부터 시작하여 다양한 관점에서 연구가 활발하게 진행되어 오고 있고, 국내에서는 2000년대에 들어서면서 비판교육을 시작으로 최근에는 현장 교사들을 중심으로 자신들의 수학수업에 사회정의를 위한 수학을 적용하는 연구가 주류를 이루고 있음을 밝히고 있다. 현재의 우리나라 입시 등 교육 체제에서 적용이 쉽지 않음을 지적하면서 사회정의를 위한 수학교육이 우리의 수학교육에 주는 시사점을 다음과 같이 제시하고 있다. 사회정의를 위한 수학교육은 전통적인 수학 수업에 대한 반성의 기회를 제공하고, 인문학적 관점에서 통합과 융합적 접근을 가능하게 한다고 주장한다. 또한, 학생들에게 수학에 대한 긍정적인 태도를 가지도록 하며, 교사나 학생들에게 수학과 세상을 보는 관점을 보다 넓고 깊게 할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 수 있다고 설명한다.

  • 본 연구는 수학교육학의 기초학문이 되는 수학과 다학문적인 성격을 띤 수학교육학을 학문학적으로 비교할 때 수학과 비교되는 수학교육학의 학문적 특징을 형식과학 대비 경험과학에 대한 논의를 중심으로 전개했다. 또한 연구방법을 중심으로 수학교육학의 기반이 되는 교육학, 심리학과 같은 사회과학과 수학교육학의 비교를 통해 수학교육학의 연구 방법적 특징에 대해 문헌연구를 통해 고찰해보았다. 본 연구에 따르면, 수학교육학은 연구 방법적 측면에서 자연과학 이라기보다는 사회과학의 성격을 많이 가지고 있으며, 형식과학으로서의 수학과 그 외 수학교육학의 인접학문들과는 구별되는 독특한 특징을 가지고 있다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 각 학문영역 연구의 주장하는 바의 정당성은 전혀 다른 시각으로 이해되어야 한다.

국내외 수학교육 연구 동향 비교 분석 (A Comparative Analysis on Research Trends of Secondary Mathematics Education between Korea and Overseas)

  • The objective of this study is to review how researches on mathematics education are being conducted currently in Korea and overseas and to examine the current state of domestic researches on mathematics education from a broader view. Although many efforts have been made to understand trends in researches on mathematics education, there have been few in depth studies on research trends in overseas or for comparison between domestic and overseas trends. Thus, this study classified and analyzed 181 domestic articles between 2005 and 2009 in the journals and and 201 overseas articles in the journals and according to year, research area, research contents, school level, research method, and key words using the PME classification system with some modification. Through these analysis, we examined research trends on secondary mathematics education in Korea and overseas. The research findings are as follows. First, 'teaching learning process' was a spotlight area both at home and overseas, and 'realistic mathematics' and 'social cultural subjects' were not covered much either at home or overseas. 'Mathematical communication' occupied a very small portion in Korea but was a highly interesting area in overseas research. Second, research contents of interest were different between Korea and overseas. Research on general area was the mainstream. But geometry and statistics were mainly studied in Korea and algebra and analysis in overseas. Third, research related to middle school was twice more than that related to high school in Korea, But, research related to middle school was the same as high school in overseas. Fourth, qualitative research was the absolute majority both at home and overseas, and philosophical didactical analysis was used only in Korea. Fifth, the order of key words were problem solving - teacher - curriculum - creativity - textbook in Korea, but teacher - teaching - semiotic - affective factor - proo f- problem solving - technology in overseas.

북한 수학교육에 관한 국내 연구 동향 (The Trend of Studies about Mathematics Education of North Korea)

  • In order to overcome the heterogeneity of mathematics education in South Korea and North Korea in preparation for the future integration of North and South Korea, research on North Korean mathematics education needs to be studied qualitatively in various aspects and fields. In order to do this, it is necessary first to elaborate and analyze the results of the research on North Korean mathematics education reported so far, to find important implications and find out the research fields that have been neglected in the meantime. Therefore, this study analyzed the trends of previous studies for establishing the direction of future studies on mathematics education in North and South Korea. As a result, it can be seen that the study on North Korean mathematics education in Korea is limited to curriculum analysis, textbook comparison, and comparison of mathematical terms between North and South.
