  • Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is to store and retrieve images using the feature description of image contents. In order to support more accurate image retrieval, it has become necessary to develop features that can effectively describe image contents. The commonly used low-level features, such as color, texture, and shape features may not be directly mapped to human visual perception. In addition, such features cannot effectively describe a single image that contains multiple objects of interest. As a result, the research on feature descriptions has shifted to focus on higher-level features, which support representations more similar to human visual perception like spatial relationships between objects. Nevertheless, the prior works on the representation of spatial relations still have shortcomings, particularly with respect to supporting rotational invariance, Rotational invariance is a key requirement for a feature description to provide robust and accurate retrieval of images. This paper proposes a high-level feature named 8AB (8 Angular Bin) that effectively describes the spatial relations of objects in an image while providing rotational invariance. With this representation, a similarity calculation and a retrieval technique are also proposed. In addition, this paper proposes a search-space pruning technique, which supports efficient image retrieval using the 8AB feature. The 8AB feature is incorporated into a CBIR system, and the experiments over both real and synthetic image sets show the effectiveness of 8AB as a high-level feature and the efficiency of the pruning technique.

  • Recent Korean popular films and television dramas represent journalist as the character who colludes with corrupt power to engage in scandals or completes one's goals by good or bad means. It matters that the negative discourse of journalists fosters audience's distrust on journalism. Representation of journalists in popular culture is related to the reliability of journalism. In relation, it is noticeable that popular media represent female journalists. This study examines how recent popular films deal with female journalists through the case of (2011) and (2012) to find improvement of discourse on journalists. In result, three female characters in these films represent positively 'reformative leadership' (Chief Cho in ), 'appropriation of information technology'(Seong Hyo Kwan in ), and 'emotional response' (Jang Eun Seo in ). Compared to representation of journalists through male, the positive representation of female journalists constributes to positive discourse on role and function of journalism. However, it may be considered that these positive representations are merely a part of whole journalists.

  • Animation films form a substantial part of pop culture and depict the sociocultural changes and values of the time in which they are made through visual expression of story and characters. In the process of appreciating animation films and accepting the characters, the audience learns the gender role behaviors that appear in the works as socially acceptable representations of men and women. This study illustrates whether the expression of gender role and behaviors of characters from animation films have changed over time or not by analyzing the costume and gestures of the female protagonists in 'Mulan', 'Tangled', 'Moana', and 'Frozen 2'. These films are considered to reflect the modern female identity on their story and characters. The study confirms that the stereotypical gestures and behaviors of women are still used today to portray the female protagonists in the animation films contrary to the story composition and various aspects of characters which escaped the formal stereotype. It is important for children and adolescents, the main consumers of animation, to learn and know how to consume media properly. Thus, this study seeks to illuminate the importance of research on animation literacy eduction for children and adolescents by examining the visual expressions and their implications in various animation films.

  • The performance of face recognition methods using subspace projection is directly related to the characteristics of their basis images, especially in the cases of local distortion or partial occlusion. In order for a subspace projection method to be robust to local distortion and partial occlusion, the basis images generated by the method should exhibit a part-based local representation. We propose an effective part-based local representation method named locally salient ICA (LS-ICA) method for face recognition that is robust to local distortion and partial occlusion. The LS-ICA method only employs locally salient information from important facial parts in order to maximize the benefit of applying the idea of 'recognition by parts.' It creates part-based local basis images by imposing additional localization constraint in the process of computing ICA architecture I basis images. We have contrasted the LS-ICA method with other part-based representations such as LNMF (Localized Non-negative Matrix Factorization) and LFA (Local Feature Analysis). Experimental results show that the LS-ICA method performs better than PCA, ICA architecture I, ICA architectureII, LFA, and LNMF methods, especially in the cases of partial occlusions and local distortions.

  • In this paper, we present an efficient way of implementing OpenGL ES 1.1 standard for the environments with hardware-supported OpenGL API, such as desktop PCs. Although OpenGL ES was started from the existing OpenGL features, it becomes a new three-dimensional graphics library customized for embedded systems through introducing fixed-point arithmetic operations, buffer management with fixed-point data type supports, completely new texture mapping functionalities and others. Currently, it is the official three dimensional graphics library for Google Android, Apple iPhone, PlayStation3, etc. In this paper, we achieved improvements on the arithmetic operations for the fixed-point number representation, which is the most characteristic data type for OpenGL ES. For the conversion of fixed-point data types to the floating-point number representations for the underlying OpenGL, we show the way of efficient conversion processes even with satisfying OpenGL ES standard requirements. We also introduced a simple memory management scheme to mange the converted data for the buffer containing fixed-point numbers. In the case of texture processing, the requirements in both standards are quite different and thus we used completely new software-implementations. Our final implementation result of OpenGL ES library provides all of over than 200 functions in OpenGL ES 1.1 standard and completely passed its conformance test, to show its compliance with the standard. From the efficiency viewpoint, we measured its execution times for several OpenGL ES-specific application programs and achieved at most 33.147 times improvements, to become the fastest one among the OpenGL ES implementations in the same category.

  • Pregnancy is a task of creation in which a women mobilizes her self and the resources available to her in the generation of a new person. Through the pregnancy, a mother has formed the new human relationship with a fetus. Maternal-fetal relationship is considered one of mechanism making the relationship of mother and child. It is important to well-being of mother and fetus, too. The earliest interaction between a mother and her child is during prenatal period. Maternal-fetal dyad is unique and perceived interactions with the fetus make the pregnancy real for the mother. Maternal behavior is "instinctive" and is formed in early childhood by copy of the mother. But, Rubin argues that this behavior is an open intellectual system rather than a prepackaged bundle of traits. There is openness to new learning and a high value placed on knowing which occurs with silent organization in thought. Thus, nurses and other health professionals provide prenatal care that optimally is part of the environment in which the maternal-fetal dyad develops. Thus it is appropriate for nurses to increases their understanding of the dyad and to explore ways to enhance its development. This study focusses on the interaction ability and response of fetus, and the maternal-fetal interaction. The research of fetal responses that involve physiological changes and motor movement have been shown to coccur to both external sensory stimuli and to maternal emotional states. The fetus does also have sensory capacity to be aware of some maternal behaviors, and the motor ability to respond in a way the mother can notice. Thus, very rudimentary interactions appear to be possible. Maternal awareness of fetal activity was supported by several studies. More interesting to the present study are description of maternal-fetal interaction and the finding that there appear to be levels of sensitivity to the fetus involved in maternal-fetal interactions. First, recognition comes that the fetus is separate from the maternal self. Next, the fetus engages in. Lastly, the parent may describe active interaction with the fetus, believing that mother and fetus are communicating on a meaningful level. Several interventions, developed to promote more active interaction between mother and fetus, have been reviewed. In general, the parents were taught to stimulate the fetus and to notice the fetus' responses. This type of intervention might increase the mother's sensitivity to her unborn baby, and she may have a head start toward learning how to res pond sensitivity to the newborn infant. Research In the area of maternal-fetal interaction is scarce. Sensitive behavior is construed as an appropriate and timely response to a signal of need from another person, but no such signal of need can be claimed regarding the fetus. The highest level of maternal-fetal interaction, therefore, might be based more on maternal representations of the imagined fetus than on factual evidence of fetal participation.

  • Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of cases that have formed and operated teachers' learning communities through cross-curricular consulting at the school level. The purpose of this study is to explore cross-curricular instructional consulting as an activity of teachers' learning communities at the school level, and investigate the effect of cross-curricular instructional consulting on middle school science teaching. We analyzed features and limitations of cross-curricular instructional consulting revealed in three case studies in middle school, including open classes and instructional consulting sessions, and conducted additional instructional consulting on the same videotaped science classes with science experts from outside. According to the results, science inquiry experiments are often replaced with text reading and interpreting, students' misconceptions and exact scientific representations are ignored, and the goal setting as well as class coverage has been questionable and disputable in science classes resulted from cross-curricular instructional consulting. Discussed in the conclusion are the necessity of cross-curricular instructional consulting in middle school, and ways to overcome limitations of the method of cross-curricular instructional consulting, including alternatives to a praise-only policy in cross-curricular instructional consulting, ways to use cross-curricular instructional consulting without compromising the subject's essence, and ways to improve the undue authority of consultants.

  • This study explores the process within which whereas the majority of Korean people agree on the principle of the unification policy, the opinions about the concrete policy alternatives related to the principle do not converge. To account for this phenomenon, a.k.a. 'the principle-policy puzzle in public opinion', this study constructs and tests a covariance structural model with the explanatory variables such as political knowledge, political ideology, authoritarian personality, social distance, and the evaluation of the president. In addition, the interaction effects of the interpretive frames regarding the unification policy and political knowledge along with the main effects of socio-demographic variables are tested to explain the degree to which people show the gap between the agreements on the unification principle and policy alternatives. A sample of 600 Seoul people are recruited to provide the data for the analysis of structural equation modeling. Ie was found that the proposed model receives empirical supports from the data. In particular, political knowledge and authoritarian personality play key roles in accounting for the complex process of public opinion in the 'principle-policy puzzle'. The findings were discussed in terms of the representations of the Engagement policy in the mass media and the public perception of them.

  • Korean mass media has represented foreigners in their documentaries, entertainment shows, situational comedies, and dramas for long time, while the representations created plenty of controversies. Alleged West-oriented racism found from various televison programs may be one of them. Recently, however, more Korean television shows began to incorporate the ideas of multi-culturalism. This paper is an attempt to explore how television audiences interpret multi-culturalism reflected in the media. More specifically, this is a case study of JTBC's , a show featuring foreigners debating on various topics regarding Korean culture. Particularly, it focuses on disputes over the producers' decision to play 'Kimigayo' (the national anthem of Japan, which is also considered as a symbol of Japanese militaristic past) when introduced a new Japanese panel. Critical discourse analysis was adoped as the main research method, and researchers found that audiences draw certain guidelines in accepting multi-cultural aspects. If and when these aspects overstep the line, they tend to abandon it without hesitance. In the case of 'Kimigayo,' it was ethno-centrism and/or anti-Japanes sentiments which made multi-culturalsim much weaker. It does not mean that multi-culturalism was replaced-or defeated-by nationalism, but show the 'vulnerability' of multi-culturalsim. Multi-culturalism is not as concretely rooted in Korean society as many people have claimed or hoped. The research has its own limitations as a case study, but it is hoped to stimulate other researchers to keep their eyes on media and multi-culturalsim in Korea.
