  • In this study, to evaluate the setting time, compressive strength and drying shrinkage of ordinary Portland cement and Portland blast-furnace slag cement mortar with 0, 10, 20, 30 wt.% alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate. As a results, as the replacement ratio of alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate increased, the initial setting time of ordinary Portland cement and Portland blast-furnace slag cement mortar was faster. In addition, the compressive strength decreased with increasing replacement ratio of alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate in both ordinary Portland cement mortar and Portland blast-furnace slag cement mortar. The strength development of Portland blast-furnace slag cement mortar with alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate was effective than that of ordinary Portland cement mortar. On the other hand, in the case of the mortar with alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate, it was confirmed that shrinkage deformation was reduced at the early age by growth pressure of needle-shaped ettringite crystals produced by incorporation of alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate. However, the effect of inhibiting shrinkage deformation of mortar with alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate was not significant as the age passed. Therefore, it is considered that the alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate is useful as a construction material.

  • This study investigates the resistance of sustainable ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) on steel reinforcement corrosion. For enhancing the sustainability of UHPC, concrete mixes were prepared with ordinary Portland cement main binder, and mixes with moderate to high percentages of blast furnace cement (CEM III), fly ash (FA), and slag cement as partial replacements of the full quantity of the used cement. Linear polarization resistance technique was employed to estimate the electrochemical behavior of the concrete specimens. Results showed that the compressive strength and the resistance of steel to corrosion in marine environments can be enhanced by improving the sustainability of UHPC through incorporation of CEM III, FA, and slag cement. FA replacement of up to 50% with the addition of 15% SF content produced better compressive strength and steel corrosion resistance than slag cement whether with the use of ordinary Portland cement or blast furnace cement as the main binder.

  • When concrete structures are exposed to sulfate or marin environments, sulfate ions penetrated into concrete make it deteriorate. An accelerated test under potential difference method was performed to evaluate not only the sulfate ion diffusivity in ordinary portland cement and ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement concretes but the effect of slag replacement and water-cement ratio on the sulfate ions diffusivity. As the result of this study, we assumed the sulfate ion diffusivity was significantly related with total passed charge and initial current in concrete. Moreover sulfate ions penetration resistance of ordinary portland cement concrete was superior to that of ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement concrete.

  • This research investigates the rheological behavior and the confined water ratio of the cement paste and binder condition in order to predict mix design proportion of the high flowing concrete. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum replacement ratio of binders including fly ash, and lime stone powder by the cement weight. For this purpose, belite cement, blast furnace slag cement and ordinary portland cement are selected. As test results, the confined water ratio shows the following range ; OPC>blast furnace slag cement>belite cement. Therefore, belite cement is proved very excellent cementitious materials in a view point of the flowability. The optimum replacement ratio of lime stone powder is shown over $30\%$ in case of belite cement and about $10\%$ in case of slag cement type. Also, the optimum replacement ratio of fly ash is shown $30\%$ by the cement weight considering the confined water ratio and deformable coefficient of the paste condition.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation in order to evaluate fresh and hardened properties of LP (Limestone Powder) blended cement concrete. The cement contents of the mixtures are replaced by LP in the range of 10%, 15%, 25%, and 35%, while a control mixture is prepared with only OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement). The fresh concrete properties like slump and air content are similar to those of control mixture up to 35% of replacement ratio of LP, however a delay in setting time is evaluated. The hardened properties including compressive strength, flexural strength, and rapid freezing and thawing resistance shows similar results of control mixture up to 15% of replacement. Relatively lower strength development is evaluated over 25% replacement of LP. For accelerated carbonation test, resistance to carbonation rapidly decreases with increasing LP replacement ratio due to the limited amount of $Ca(OH)_2$. From the study, LP replacement under 15% can be adopted considering reduction of strength and resistance to carbonation.

  • The rheological properties of cement paste system mixed with mineral admixture for the purpose of increasing the strength and improving durability and rheology of concrete were investigated. The results were as follows: The rheological properties of one-ingredient paste system were improved with increasing the dosage of superplasticizer. For two-ingredients paste system, increasing the replacement rate of BFS(blast furnace slag) and FA(fly ash), the yield value and plastic viscosity were decreased compared with non-replacement. In the OPC(ordinary portland cement)-SF(silica fume) system, increasing the replacement rate of SF, the plastic viscosity and yield value increased linearly. In three-ingredients paste system, both OPC-BFS-SF and OPC-FA-SF system, the rheological properties were improved compared with the only replacement of SF. Both two- and three- ingredients paste system, the rheological properties using BFS were improved more than FA.

  • Tailing Material (TM) and Fly Ash (FA) are obtained as waste products from the mining and thermal industries. Studies were carried out to explore the possibility of utilizing TM as a part replacement to fine aggregate and FA as a part replacement to cement, in concrete mixes. The effect of replacing fine aggregate by TM and cement by FA on the standard sized specimen for compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strengths are evaluated in this study. The concrete mix of M40 grade was adopted with water cement ratio equal to 0.40. Concrete mix with 35% TM and 65% natural sand (TM35/S65) has shown superior performance in strength as against (TM0/S100, TM30/S70, TM40/S60, TM50/S50, and TM60/S40). For this composition, studies were performed to propose the optimal replacement of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) by FA (Replacement levels studied were 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%). Replacement level of 20% OPC by FA, has shown about 0-5% more compressive strength as against the control mix, for both 28 day and 56 days of water curing. Interestingly results of split tensile and flexural strengths for 20% OPC replaced by FA, have shown strengths equal to that of no replacement (control mix).

  • As a eco-friendly material, Hwangtoh (red clay) has been studied for complete or partial replacement of portland cement. Most of existing studies focused on the material properties of the Hwangtoh concrete including the compressive strength, drying shringkage, and creep. In the present study, the shear strength of the beams made with the Hwangtoh concrete was tested. Further, bond strength of tension re-bars embedded in the Hwangtoh concrete was tested. One of the concrete tested consisted of activated Hwangtoh replacing 20% of the cement. The other consisted 100% activated. Hwangtoh replacing all the cement. The beam specimens were tested under two point static loading. The test result showed that the shear strength of activated Hwangtoh concrete beams replacing 20% and 100% of cement was equivalent to that of the ordinary portland cement concrete beam. However, the bond strength of activated Hwangtoh concrete replacing 100% of the cement was less than that of the ordinary portland cement concrete.
