  • A study was made of the effect of zeolite in detergent on the removal of soils correlating the characteristics of soil components. The detergency of natural soil was increased with increasing zeolite concentration but the effect on detergency was inferior to STPP. In case of carbon black based artificial soils. The detergency of soil containning non-polar oily soil was not improved by zeolite but the detergancy was increased with increasing zeolite concentration when polar oily soils were added to the soil. In case of iron black based artificial soils. Though the detergency was better than that of carbon black based soils, the detergency was not improved by zeolite regardless of oily soil components. The effect of zeolite on removal of oily soil was studied with tripalmitin and palmitic acid as model soils. The effect of zeolite and STPP on the removal of tripalmitin, the detergency was increased with in creasing STPP concentration but not zeolite.

  • This study carried out to recommend adaptable technologies and countermeasures for performance improvement of Wet Scrubber(WS) in industrial waste incinerator. When not using the Activated Carbon(AC), the removal efficiency of dust and HCl is 73%, 92%. And particulate phase and gaseous phase dioxins removal efficiency was evaluated up to 31% and 12%. In this case, dioxins enrichment was not revealed in WS. When using the AC mixing with scrubbing water, the case of 1,000ppm, removal efficiency of particulate phase dioxins was about 51%, and gaseous phase dioxins was about 96%. The case of 2,000ppm, removal efficiency of particulate phase dioxins was about 55%, and gaseous phase dioxins was about 97%. And the case of 3,500ppm, the removal efficiency of particulate phase dioxins was about 35%, and gaseous phase dioxins was about 96% respectively. By this study, using the AC was more useful to remove the gaseous phase dioxins, and needed to use proper concentration of the AC, that in case of 3,500ppm, the particulate phase dioxins removal efficiency was more lower than other cases.

  • The present study was carried out to examine the effect of crosslinked ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin(${\beta}$-CD) made by adipic acid on cholesterol removal rate and find the structural change after recycling on SEM observation. The size reduction and morphological changes were found during the recycling process and the profound changes were observed at 8th time reuse. After cholesterol removal in milk, the used crosslinked ${\beta}$-CD was washed for cholesterol dissociation and reused. In recycling study, the cholesterol removal rate at first trial was 92.5% in milk, which was mostly same as that using new crosslinked ${\beta}$-CD(92.4%). With repeated 10th reuse of crosslinked ${\beta}$-CD resulted in 81.4% of cholesterol removal in milk. Similar trend was found in cream and cholesterol removal was 91.5% at 1st trial and 83.4% at 10th trial. In both milk and cream samples, the removal rate at 1st reuse was not significantly different from that at 6th reuse(p>0.05). The present study indicated that crosslinked ${\beta}$-CD made by adipic acid resulted in the effective recycling efficiency, especially up to 6th reuse and morphological modifications were not distinguishable up to 8th reuse.

  • This study was carried out the simultaneous removal or organics and Cr(VI) in aqueous suspensions of phtocatalyst under circular type reactor and UV light illumination. In this experiment, comparison on the removal of Cr(VI) by photoreduction using UV light, photocatalyst adsorption using TiO2, ZnO, and FeCl3 as photocatalyst, and phtocatalysis using UV light with photocatalysts as well as the effect of experimental parameters such as phtocatalyst dosage, a kinds of organics and their concentration was examined. The major results of this study were as follows; 1. It was found that photocatalyst adsorption and phtocatalysis were applicable to the removal of Cr(VI), and Cr(VI) was more effectively eliminated by TiO2 than ZnO, and FeCl3. 2. phtocatalytic removal efficiency of Cr (VI) increased with increasing phtocatalyst dosage. However, over 1.0g/l of phtocatalyst dosage, the efficiency reached a plateau. 3. phtocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) was enhanced by addition of organics such as salicylic acid, mandelic acid, EDTA, and citric acid, and phtocatalytic oxidation of organics were also observed. 4. It was found that the simultaneous removal of organics and Cr(VI) using phtocatalysis was possible.

  • Wastewater treatment plants need to reduce phosphorus in order to meet increasingly stringent regulations on phosphorus. This study evaluated the feasibility of dolomite as a coagulation aid to enhance phosphorus removal from secondary treated wastewater by chemical coagulation. Standard jar tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of dolomite addition on a coagulation process for phosphorus removal and to determine the optimum doses of coagulants and dolomite. Coagulants used with dolomite yielded a significant improvement in phosphorus removal and reduced total phosphorus concentrations below 0.02 mg/L in wastewater effluent. Dolomite has played an important role in enhancing phosphate adsorption and increasing pH, as a coagulation aid. The maximum removal efficiency of phosphorus in this study was yielded at 25 mg/l of dolomite and 20 mg Al/L of PAC dose. However, considering economic aspects, the optimum doses of dolomite and PAC were 10 mg/L and 15mg Al/L, respectively. Consequently, dolomite, a coagulation aid, can be used in coagulation processes to enhance the removal of phosphorus.

  • This study is to develop electromagnetic-catalyst application plasma reactors for indoor air purification. Nitrogen Oxide(NOx) removal characteristics are measured in the electromagnetic catalyst application plasma reactors with various parameters and the effect of catalyst or/and magnetic field are investigated on the NOx removal. And AC or DC high voltage is applied for corona discharge, flow rates are 150~1500 $\ell/min$ and NO initial concentration is about 10 ppm. $Mn0_2$ and $TiO_2$ catalysts to increase NOx removal rate are used. In the results, NOx removal rate by AC power is about 10 % higher than that by DC power under the experimental condition of 700 $\ell/min$, 5 magnets, $MnO_2$ and $Ti)_2$ catalysts. When magnet is applied to the reactor, NOx removal rate increased. Also, the reactor with $MnO_2$ and $Ti)_2$ catalyst and magnet have the best removal rate.

  • Research work on removal of fluoride from water, referred to as water defluoridation, has resulted into the development of a number of technologies over the years but they suffer from either cost or efficiency drawbacks. In this work, enhancement effects of phosphate and silicate on defluoridation of water by low-cost Plaster of Paris (calcined gypsum) were studied. To our knowledge, the influence of silicate on defluoridation was not reported. It was claimed, that the presence of some ions in the treated water samples, was decreasing the fluoride removal since these ions compete the fluoride ions on occupying the available adsorption sites, however, phosphate and silicate ions, from its sodium slats, have enhanced the fluoride % removal, hence, precipitation of calcium-fluoro compounds of these ions can be suggested. Percentage removal of $F^-$ by neat Plaster is 48%, the electrical conductance (EC) curve shows the typical curve of Plaster setting which begins at 20 min and finished at 30 min. The addition of phosphate and silicate ions enhances the removal of fluoride to high extent > 90%. Thermodynamics parameters showed spontaneous fluoride removal by neat Plaster and Plaster-silicate system. The percentage removal with time showed second-order reaction kinetics.

  • The biological nutrient removal from domestic wastewater with low C/N ratio is difficult. Therefore, this study was performed to increase influent C/N ratio by ammonia stripping without required carbon source and for improving treatment efficiencies of sewerage by the combination process of ammonia stripping and BNR (StripBNR). The results of this study were summarized as follows. BOD removal efficiencies of BNR and StripBNR were 95.3% and 93.2%, respectively. T-N and T-P removal efficiencies of BNR were 53.3% and 40.8%, respectively. T-N and T-P removal efficiencies of StripBNR were 72.8% and 62.9%, respectively. Concentrations of $NH_3-N$, $NO_2-N$ and $NO_3-N$ at BNR effluent were 0.03 mg/L, 0.08 mg/L and 9.12 mg/L, respectively. On the other hands, concentrations of $NH_3-N$, $NO_2-N$ and $NO_3-N$ at StripBNR effluent were 5.79 mg/L, 0.01 mg/L and 0.14 mg/L, respectively. Consequently, influent C/N ratio of BNR process was increased by ammonia stripping. Removal efficiency of T-N and T-P was improved about 20% by the process of StripBNR.

  • In this study, several series of experiments were conducted to investigate the phosphorus (P) removal process in slag-containing solution using furnace and converter slags. High amount of $OH^-$, $Ca^{2+}$ and alkalinity were discharged from the slags and hydroxyapatites [$Ca_5(PO_4)_3(OH)$] were kept accumulated on the surface of slag. P removal capacity of the slag decreased with the increase of slag dosage. The maximum capacity was found to be 11.25 mg/g at the converter slag. Converter slag adsorbed P more than furnace slag(about four times in average). An experimental study on the effect of pH shows that the percentage removal of P increased upto 30% at the pH range of 56 than that of above pH 8. Langmuir isotherm constants gave a better correlation than Freundlich ones. P removal amount in the presence of $NH^+_4$ was less compared to the one in the absence of $NH^+_4$. Maximum percentage reduction was 23%.
