  • In this study, we investigate the atmospheric environment changes in the aspect of optical remote sensing using surface observation data from 1971 to 2000 of Korea Meteorological Administration. Visibility, spatially averaged over Korean peninsula, is systematically reduced from about 28km to 18km during the last 30 years. It means that atmospheric conditions for the optical remote sensing over Korean peninsula are growing worse and worse due to the degradation of air quality. The 30-year average of cloud amount shows a strong seasonal variation, maximum(75%) in summer and minimum (35%) in autumn. Precipitation also shows a very similar variation pattern with cloud. The temperature and sea level pressure show a opposite seasonal change pattern, maximum(minimum in SLP) in summer and minimum(maximum in SLP) in winter, respectively. Relative humidiy(RH) is one of the variables mostly affected by urbanization or urban heat island. As a results, annual mean RH is decreased from 73% to 68% during last 30 years. When we take into account the favorable and unfavorable factors all together, summer and autumn are the worst and the best season for optical remote sensing in Korea.

  • The objective of this paper is to determine the suitable spectral bands for monitoring growth status change during a long period. The long-term ground-level reflectance spectra as well as LAI and biomass were obtained in xiaotangshan area, Beijing, 2001. The narrow-band NDVI type spectral indices by all possible two bands were calculated their correlation coefficients R$^2$ with biomass and LAI. The best NDVIs must have higher R$^2$ with both biomass and LAI. The reasonable band centers and band widths were determined by a systematically increasing bandwidth centered over a wavelength. In addition, the first 19 bands of MODIS were simulated and investigated. Each developed spectral indices was then validated by the biomass and LAI time series using the generalized vector angle. It turned out that six new NDVI type indices within 750-1400nm were developed. NDVI(811_10,957_10) and NDVI(962_10,802_10) performed best. No satisfactory conventional NDVI formed by red and NIR bands were found effective. MODIS_NDVI(band19, band17) and MODIS_NDVI(band19, band2) were much better than MODIS_NDVI(band2,band1) for growth monitoring.

  • Typhoons were known by contributing to transporting plus heat or kinetic energy from equatorial region to midlatitude region. Due to the strong damage from typhoon, we acknowledged the theoretical study and the importance of accurate forecast about typhoon. In this study, typhoon forecasting system was developed to search the tracks of past typhoons or to display similar track of past typhoon in comparison with the path of current forecasting typhoon. It was programmed using Interactive Data Language(IDL), which was a complete computing environment for the interactive analysis and visualization of data. Typhoon forecasting system was also included satellite image and auxiliary chart. IR, Water Vapor, Visible satellite images helped users analyze an accurate forecast of typhoon. They were further refined the procedures for generating water vapor winds and gave an initial indication of their utility for numerical weather prediction(NWP), in particular for typhoon track forecasting where they could provide important information. They were also available for its utility in typhoon tracer or intensity.

  • Recently, the necessity of accessing spatial data from remote computer via network has been increased as distributed spatial data have been increased due to their size and cost. Many methods have been used in recent years for transferring spatial data, such as socket, CORBA, HTTP, RPC, FTP, etc. In this paper, we propose spatial clearinghouse components to access distributed spatial data sources via CORBA and Internet. The spatial clearinghouse components are defined as OLE/COM components that enable users to access spatial data that meet their requests from remote computer. For reusability, we design the spatial clearinghouse with UML and implement it as a set of components. In order to enhance interoperability among different platforms in distributed computing environment, we adopt international standards and open architecture such as CORBA, HTTB, and OpenGIS Simple Features Specifications. There are two kinds of spatial clearinghouse: CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse and Internet-based spatial clearinghouse. The CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse supports COM-CORBA bridge to access spatial data from remote data providers that satisfy the OpenGIS Simple Features Specification for OLE/COM using COM and CORBA interfaces. The Internet-based spatial clearinghouse provides Web-service components to access spatial data from remote data providers using Web-browser.

  • Previous technology of remote sensing was focused on analyzing raster image and gaining information through image processing. But now it has extended to diverse fields like automatic map generation, material exploitation or monitoring environmental changes with effort to utilizing practical usage. And with rapid expansion of information exchange on Internet and high-speed network, the demand of public which want to utilize remotely sensed image has been increased. This makes growth of service on acquisition and processing remotely sensed image. GeoNet is a Java-based remotely sensed image processing system. It is based on Java object-oriented paradigm and features cross-platform, web-based execution and extensibility to client/server remotely sensed image processing model. Remotely sensed image processing software made by Java programming language can suggest alternatives to meet readily demand on remotely sensed image processing in proportion to increase of remotely sensed data. In this paper, we introduce GeoNet and explain its architecture.

  • Most of existing integrated remote controllers can control only a group of home appliances made by the same manufacturer. And they cannot monitor the status of home appliances since they are based on analog RF(Radio Frequency) signal and operate in a uni-directional manner In this paper, we propose a software framework for a hi-directional universal remote controller(URC) which monitors the status of home appliances in Wireless Personal Area Network(WPAN). The URC can handle the control and status messages which consist of a command with related arguments. When a user wants to control any home appliance, the URC can be dynamically configured to its dedicated remote controller by generating a GUI according to its profile. Any other devices which have a capacity for understanding the profile from the controlled devices can play the same role of the URC.

  • We consider the development of an integer programming model and algorithm for the ATM switching node location problem. There are two kinds of facilities, hub facilities and remote facilities, with different capacities and installation costs. Each customer needs to be connected to one or more hub facilities via remote facilities, where the hub(remote) facilities need to be installed at the same candidate installation site of hub(remote) facility. We are given a set of customers with each demand requirements, a set of candidate installation sites of facilities, and connection costs between facilities, We need to determine the locations to place facilities, the number of facilities for each selected location, the set of customers who are connected to each installed hub facilities via installed remote facilities with minimum costs, while satisfying demand requirements of each customer. We formulate this problem as a general integer programming problem and solve it to optimality. In this paper, we develop a branch-and-cut algorithm with path variables. In the algorithm, we consider the integer knapsack polytope and derive valid inequalities. Computational experiments show that the algorithm works well in the real world situation. The results of this research can be used to develop optimization algorithms to solve capacitated facility location problems.

  • Microwave remote sensing is probably the most recent experimental technique suitable to the non-contact measurement of deflections on large structures, in static or dynamic conditions. In the first part of the paper, the main techniques adopted in microwave remote sensing are described, so that advantages and potential issues of these techniques are presented and discussed. Subsequently, the paper addresses the application of the radar technology to the measurement of the vibration response on the stay cables of two cable-stayed bridges. The dynamic tests were performed in operational conditions (i.e. with the excitation being mainly provided by micro-tremors, wind and traffic) and the maximum deflections of the cables were generally lower than 5.0 mm. The investigation clearly highlights: (a) the safe and simple use of the radar on site and its effectiveness to simultaneously measure the dynamic response of all the stay cables of an array; (b) the negligible effects of the typical issues and uncertainties that might affect the radar measurements; (c) the accuracy of the results provided by the microwave remote sensing in terms of natural frequencies and tension forces of the stay cables; (d) the suitability of microwave interferometry to the repeated application within Structural Health Monitoring programmes.
