  • For the successful performance of a private infrastructure project, an effective project financing is indispensable through various domestic/overseas sources. This study explains the concept of the private infrastructure development and investigates its current status in Korea. In addition, the details of the changed environment for the project finance under the newly enacted 'Private Investment Act' are compared in an analytical manner to those under the previous law. Finally, it discusses the problems that still remain and recommends the remedies available for the better financing environment.

  • Flow control butterfly valve(FCBV) is known to have difficulty in controlling flow rate along valve opening due to its high flow rate. In low opening condition, the butterfly valve also has some shortcomings such as noise, vibration and erosion which are mostly caused by cavitation effects. Therefore, the FCBV requires proper remedies to reduce cavitation effects and to improve flow control performance. Numerical analysis is applied to FCBV flow to find effects of design factors such as seat diameter and valve opening rate. Cases with 3 different sizes of seat diameter and various valve opening rate are selected for the numerical analysis. From the analysis results, it is found that the FCBV with small seat diameter shows better pressure loss performance and reduced cavitation effects.

  • Korean folk medicine 'Ggeong Yi Da Ri' has been used mainly as remedies for stomach trouble, bruise and neuralgia. The botanical origin of the crude drug has not been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Ggeong Yi Da Ri', the morphology and anatomy of leaf and stem were examined for the Korean species of Thalictrum plants, such as T. acetaefolium, T. aquilegifolium, T. filamentosum, T. minus var. hypoleucum, T. minus var. stipellatum and T. rochebrunianum. The botanical origin of 'Ggeong Yi Da Ri' was clarified as the leaf and stem from Thalictrum aquilegifolium and T. filamentosum.

  • Studies were undertaken to develop for the anti-inflammatory analgesic activities of 'Insam-Tang' extract, which composed of four crude drugs; Ginseng Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Atractylodis Rhizoma, and Zingiberis Rhizoma, was known to be applied in edema, convulsion, excremental blood, and cooling pain etc, in oriental herb remedies. It was exhibited significant anti-inflammatory effect on carrageenin inflammation, and preventive and therapeutic effects to chronic inflammation on Freund' complete adjuvant in rats, Especially, therapeutic effect of extract 500mg/kg was observed more effective than that of phenylbutazone 50mg/kg. Also, it was shown significant effect on leakage of dye into the peritoneal cavity and analgesic effect on squirm symptom induced by acetic acid in mice.

  • In series of the the development of domestic natural products, the studies were conducted to evaluate the pharmacologically active substances of the roots of Pursatilla koreana, which is a specific plant, widely distributed in this country and known to be effective as antiinflammatory, hemostatic and antidysentric agents in oriental remedies. From the hydrolysis of methanol extract of the root, a triterpenic substance was isolated. It was identified as $hederagenin\;C_{30}H_{48}O_4,\; m.p.\;333^{\circ}{\sim}334^{\circ}$, by the m.m.p. with authentic sample, elemental analysis, IR, mass spectra and the other physico-chemical experimentations.

  • Process fault diagnosis is a complicated matter because quality control problems can result from a variety of causes. These causes include problems with electrical components, mechanical components, human errors, job justification errors, and air conditioning influences. In order to make the system run smoothly with minimum delay, it is necessary to suggest heuristic remedies for the detected faults. Hence, this paper describes a heuristic methodology of fault diagnosis that is performed using statistical patterns generated by quality characteristics The proposed methodology is described briefly as follows: If a sample pattern generated by random variables is similar to the number of prototype patterns, the sample pattern may be matched by any prototype pattern among them to be resembled. This concept is based on the similarity between a sample pattern and the matched prototype pattern. The similarity is calculated as the weighted average of squared deviation, which is expressed as the difference between the relative values of standard normal distribution to be transformed by the observed values of quality characteristics in a sample pattern and the critical values of the corresponding ones in a matched prototype pattern.

  • Local linear smoothing enjoys several excellent theoretical and numerical properties, an in a range of applications is the method most frequently chosen for fitting curves to noisy data. Nevertheless, it suffers numerical problems in places where the distribution of design points(often called predictors, or explanatory variables) is spares. In the case of univariate design, several remedies have been proposed for overcoming this problem, of which one involves adding additional ″pseudo″ design points in places where the orignal design points were too widely separated. This approach is particularly well suited to treating sparse bivariate design problem, and in fact attractive, elegant geometric analogues of unvariate imputation and interpolation rules are appropriate for that case. In the present paper we introduce and develop pseudo dta rules for bivariate design, and apply them to real data.

  • In the Republic of Korea, mathematics has always been a major blame for huge private expenditures on so-called "private education," which consists of private tutoring and lessons at "private academies of extra curricula." The private spending on out-of-school education often exceeded public expenditures on schools. In 1997, South Korean Ministry of Education reformed curriculum of mathematics along with other subjects to ease the burden of private education. The aim of this curriculum change was to put a boost on individual students' interests, affections and other attributes toward school mathematics. The essential distinctiveness of the new curriculum of mathematics compared with the previous one is as follows: 1. The implementation of so-called "differentiated curriculum" for grades 1-10. 2. 30% reduction of contents in mathematics and the reconciliation of contents. 3. Elective subjects for mathematics for grades 11 and 12. 4. More uses of technology in mathematics teaching. Firstly, we examine the background of the curriculum reform and analyze the new curriculum according to awareness of educational administrators, teaching environments of schools and readiness of mathematics teachers. Then we find out what kinds of problems it has and look for some suggestions for remedies.

  • Phenypropanolamine (PPA) is a sympathetic amine used in over-the-counter cold remedies and weight-control preparations. The side effects are hypertension, dysrhythmias, stroke, etc. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking steps to remove PPA from all drug products and has requested that all drug companies discontinue marketing products containg PPA due to high risk of hemorrhage stroke. But, in Korea now, patinets take products containg PPA with over the counter. We report here the case of PPA induced myocardial injury in a young woman who takes overdose for suicide.

  • Fruits of Rubus coreanum (Korean name: Bog-bun-ja) have been used in oriental traditional medicine as the remedies for impotence, pollution, premature ejaculation and frequency of urination etc. It is known to have phenolic compounds as an astringent. By means of chromatographic methods, four hydrolyzable tannins were isolated from the fruits of R. coreanum. The structures of these compounds were established as gallic acid, 2,3(S)-HHDP-D-glucopyranose, sanguiin H-4 and sanguiin H-6 on the basis of physicochemical and spectroscopic evidences.
