  • Structures of stories, paragraphs, and sentences and inferences applied to indexing and searching were studied to construct the full-text and sentence retrieval system for storytelling. The system designed the database of stories, paragraphs, and sentences and the knowledge-base of inference rules to aid to write the story. The Knowledge-base comprised the files of story frames, paragraph scripts, and sentence logics made by mark-up languages like SWRL etc. able to operate in semantic web. It is necessary to establish more precise indexing language represented the sentences and to create a mark-up languages able to construct more accurate inference rules.

  • Opinion retrieval is to retrieve items which are relevant to the user information need topically and include opinion about the topic. This paper aims to find a method to represent user information need for effective opinion retrieval and to analyze the combination methods for opinion features through various experiments. The experiments are carried out in the inference network framework using the Blogs06 collection and 100 TREC test topics. The results show that our suggested representation method based on hidden 'opinion' concept is effective, and the compact model with very small opinion lexicon shows the comparable performance to the previous model on the same test data set.

  • From the lack of common rule for the description of the characters and terms in bibliographic databases, it was hard to share information with other organizations and to obtain relevant bits of information through online retrieval. In this paper, the authors suggest a rule for the transcription of symbols and letters, that are found in articles. but impossible to input through CRT terminals, into the symbols and letters which is capable of input and retrieval. And, in the 'Hangul orthography' and 'Description rule of the borrowed words' which are officially announced by the Ministry of Education, more than two ways are permited for the expression of terms. In that case, to improve retrieval efficiency and to prevent 'confusion in description, they are regulated.

  • Existing image search systems allow users to search images by keywords, or by example images through content-based image retrieval (CBIR). On the other hand, users might learn more relevant textual information about an image from its text captions or surrounding contexts within documents or Web pages. Without such contexts, it's difficult to extract semantic description directly from the image content. In this paper, we propose an annotation watermarking system for users to embed text descriptions, and retrieve more relevant textual information from similar images. First, tags associated with an image are converted by two-dimensional code and embedded into the image by discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Next, for images without annotations, similar images can be obtained by CBIR techniques and embedded annotations can be extracted. Specifically, we use global features such as color ratios and dominant sub-image colors for preliminary filtering. Then, local features such as Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) descriptors are extracted for similarity matching. This design can achieve good effectiveness with reasonable processing time in practical systems. Our experimental results showed good accuracy in retrieving similar images and extracting relevant tags from similar images.

  • The purpose of this study is to design and implement an ontology-based retrieval system for the electronic records of universities and to compare its performance with the existing keyword-based retrieval system. We used OntoStudio 1.4 for implementing an ontology-based retrieval system, and the test collection consisted of the following: (1) 5,099 electronic records of the 'personnel management notification' created by Korea Maritime University, (2) 20 topics (10 short-topics and 10 long-topics), and (3) the relevant assessments were conducted by the group of human experts. 10 university staff participated in the experiment of keyword-based searching and used the same test collection as used in the experiment of ontology-based searching. The ontology-based retrieval system outperformed to the keyword-based retrieval system in terms of Recall and Precision, and the same results showed in the test of the short-topics and long-topics comparison.

  • Indexing techniques for distributed resources have much effect on an information service system based on distributed environment like digital library. There is a centralized indexing technique, a distributed technique, and a mixed technique for distributed indexing techniques. In this paper, we propose new distributed indexing technique using EIF(extended Inverted File) structure that mix the centralized technique and t도 distributed technique. And we propose management techniques using EIF structure and retrieval technique using EIF structure. This distributed indexing technique proposed is able to fast process retrieval request and reduce network overload and select servers relevant to query terms. This paper investigated performance of a proposed distributed indexing technique.

  • Use cases are commonly used to represent customer requirements during systems development. In a large software development environment, finding relevant use cases from a library of past or related projects is a complex, error-prone and expensive task. This study proposes an ontological methodology to support use case retrieval in an interactive manner. The architecture of a prototype system that implements this methodology is presented. To evaluate whether the proposed approach can provide satisfactory results to users, this study develops a research model and hypotheses based on interaction theory. These hypotheses are empirically tested using a laboratory experiment which controls information filtering and perceived interaction. Our study suggests that a system which interacts with a user intelligently reduces cognitive load and increases self-efficacy and satisfaction.

  • The traditional way of access to image information is through descriptive keyword searching. However, many studies in image indexing and retrieval have reached a consensus on the difficulties and limitations of text-base image description. This research investigates the feasibility of using visual browsing that is being used comparatively much less than keyword searching. The effectiveness of Keyword access versus visual access were examined through experiments in which participants searched for pictures of specified emotions using different access modes: keywords only, visual browsing only, and the combination of both. It was found that keyword searching was appropriate for clean searches while visual browsing was the effective way to browse many pictures quickly, thus finding more relevant pictures. Findings and results can guide of images retrieval systems, especially the retrieval system of subjective and interpretive information.

  • Achieving the beneficiary goal of recent discovery in human genome project still needs a way to retrieve and analyze the exponentially expanding bio-related information. Research on bio-related fields naturally applies knowledge discovered to the current problem and make inferences to extract new information where shared concepts and data containing information need to be defined and used in a coherent way. In such a professional domain, while the need to help users reduce their work and to improve search results has been emerged, methods for systematic retrieval and adequate exchange of relevant information are still in their infancy. The design of our system aims at improving the quality of information retrieval in a professional domain by utilizing both corpus-based and concept-based ontology. Meta-rules of helping users to make an adequate query are formed into an ontology in the domain. The integration of those knowledge permits the system to retrieve relevant information in a more semantic and systematic fashion. This work mainly describes the query models with details of GUI and a secondary query generation of the system.

  • The knowledge base on emotional information is one of the key elements in the implementation of emotion retrieval systems for contents design of Mobile devices. This study proposed a new approach to the knowledge base implementation by automatically extracting color components from full-color images. In this study, the validity of the proposed method was empirically tested. Database was developed using 100 interior images as visual stimuli and a total of 48 subjects participated in the experiment. In order to test the reliability of the proposed 'emotional information knowledge base', firstly 'recall ratio' that refers to frequencies of correct images from the retrieved images was derived. Secondly, correlation Analysis was performed to compare the ratings by the subjects to what the system calculated. Finally, the rating comparison was used to run a paired-sample t-test. The analysis demonstrated satisfactory recall ration of 62.1%. Also, a significant positive correlation (p<.01) was observed from all the emotion keywords. The paired Sample t-test found that all the emotion keywords except "casual" retrieved the images in the order from more relevant to less relevant images and the difference was statistically significant (t(9)=5.528, p<.05). Findings of this study support that the proposed 'emotional information knowledge base' established only with color information automatically extracted from images can be effectively used for such visual stimuli search tasks as commercial interior images.
