  • The present study was conducted to investigate whether dietary essential oils could affect growth performance, relative organ weights, cecal microflora, immune responses and blood profiles of broiler chickens fed on diets containing different nutrient densities. A total of eight hundred-forty 1-d-old male broiler chicks were randomly allotted into twenty-eight pens (7 pens per treatment, 30 chicks per pen). There were four experimental diets containing two different nutrient densities and supplemented with or without essential oils. Experimental period lasted for 35 days. No clear interaction between nutrient density and essential oils on any of growth performance-related parameters was observed. Live body weights were affected (p<0.05) by nutrient density at 21 days and by dietary essential oils at 35 days. Essential oils significantly (p<0.05) increased daily body weight gain and feed conversion ratio during the periods of 22 to 35 and 1 to 35 days, but failed to affect feed intake during the entire experimental period. Daily weight gain at 1 to 21 days and feed intake at 1 to 21 and 1 to 35 days were significantly impaired (p<0.05) by nutrient density. There were significant treatment interactions (p<0.05) on relative weights of bursa of Fabricius and abdominal fat contents. Finally, either essential oil or nutrient density did not influence the relative percentages of breast and leg meats, the population of cecal microflora, blood parameters and antibody titers against Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis in broiler chickens. It was concluded that dietary essential oils, independent to nutrient density, failed to stimulate feed intake, but increased growth performance in broiler chickens.

  • The effects of various 2, 4-D-degradative plasmids on the axenic growth patterns, the degradation phenotypes, and the competitiveness of different host bacteria were evaluated in liquid cultures; the organisms and plasmids used were Alcaligenes eutrophus JMP134/pJP4, Alcaligenes paradoxus/p2811, Pseudomonas pickettii/p712, pJP4, and p712 or p 2811 exhibited very different restriction fragment profiles in restriction endonuclease digests. These plasmids were transferred to the recipients (P. cepacia and Alcaligenes JMP228) at relatively high frequencies ranging from 8.9 $\times$ 10$^3$ to 1.6 $\times$ 10$^5$ per donar cell. In the axenic liquid cultures the fast-growing strains, such as P. pseudomallei/p745 and P. cepacia/pJP4, exhibited short lag periods, high specific growth rates, and high relative fitness coefficients, while the slow-growing strains, such as P. pickettii/p712 and A. paradoxus/p2811, had long lag periods, low specific growth rates, and low relative fitness coefficients. Depending on the type of plasmid containing the genes for the 2, 4-D pathway, some transconjugants exhibited intermediate grwoth patterns between the fast-growing strains and the slow-growing strains. The plasmid and plasmid-host interactions determined specific growth rate and lag time, respectively, which were shown to be principal determinants of competitiveness among the strains, but relative fitness coefficient derived from the axenic culture was not always predictive for the mixed culture condition.

  • The finite element analyses of the wrinkling initiation and growth in the sheet metal forming process provide the detailed information about the wrinkling behavior of sheet metal. The direct analyses of the wrinkling initiation and growth, however, bring about a little difficulty in complex industrial problems because it needs large memory size and long computation time. For the description of wrinkling growth, the mesh elements should be sufficiently small and the size of finite element matrix becomes large. In the static implicit finite element method therefore, the direct analysis of wrinkling growth in a complex sheet metal forming process is rather difficult. From the industrial viewpoint of tooling design, the readily available information of possibility and location of wrinkling is sometimes more preferable to the detailed time-consuming information. In the present study, therefore, the wrinkling factor that shows locations and relative possibility of wrinkling initiation is proposed as a convenient tool of relative wrinkling estimation based on the energy criterion. The location and relative possibility of wrinkling initiation are predicted by calculating the wrinkling factor in various sheet metal forming processes such as cylindrical cup deep drawing, spherical cup deep drawing, and elliptical cup deep drawing. The wrinkling factor is also implemented in the analysis of the door inner stamping process to predict wrinkling.

  • This paper analyzes the size of direct and indirect impact of the information and communication technology(ICT) producing sector to the Korean economic growth We first divide the entire economy into the ICT producing sector and the ICT using sector, and estimate the contributions to the economic growth by each sector. We also try to answer the question on what the possible causes of the ICT producing sector's contribution are to growth. In oder to find the answer, we focus on the change in the relative prices of ICT products produced in the ICT producing sector and examine the long-term relations among the relative prices of ICT products, the ratio of ICT products used in the ICT using sector as an intermediate input, and the output of the entire economy. We find that the overall economic growth has been weakened but the ICT sector's contribution to the growth has increased. Specifically, the indirect contribution of the ICT producing sector, through the ICT using sector, to economic growth was greater than the direct contribution of the ICT producing sector itself. We also find a stable, long-term negative relation between the relative prices of ICT products produced in the ICT producing sector and the ratio of ICT products as an intermediate input in the ICT using sector. In addition, the decrease in the relative prices of ICT products produced in the ICT producing sector increases the use of ICT products in the ICT using sector and the output of the entire economy. These findings can be interpreted that the price decrease in the ICT products improves the production efficiency in other sectors and helps directly and indirectly, accelerating growth of the entire economy.

  • We investigated the role of competition in adaptation to varying water availability levels for two ecotypically-differentiated populations of Impatiens pallida found naturally in low- vs. high-water environments. In a greenhouse experiment, seedlings were grown in pure cultures at two densities (n=1 and 2 plants per pot) and in mixed cultures (n=2) under low-, medium- and high-water treatments. The two populations were shown to be genetically distinct across the range of environmental conditions in the greenhouse experiment, confirming previous findings. The two populations had similar morphological responses to density and water availability in pure cultures and mixtures, but the population from the high-water environment showed a greater growth response to high water availability than did the population from the low-water environment and the difference in growth between the two populations decreased from the high-water to low-water treatment. Relative competitive ability of two populations were compared under three different water treatments and two densities. Differential response to watering treatment and density were not reflected in a difference in relative competitive ability. Relative yield totals were significantly greater than 1 overall. The niche differentiation suggested by RYTs>1 may be responsible for the lack of differential competitive effects observed for populations in the three vatering treatments.

  • The study was performed to analyze the growth of the red pine (Pinus densiflora) in the Eastern Region of Korea. Stem profile data from a total of 8 dominant trees of which each tree represents its site were collected and used for the analysis. The stem volumes were calculated using Smalian's formula and much higher than the ones by Korea Forest Research Institute in larger than dbh 40 cm. The total bark volumes were more proportionally related to dbh and stem volume than to height and age. The bark thickness and volume decreased as relative height increases but increased as relative dbh increased. The average PAI of dbh and height reached the highest at 0.8 cm/yr (age 15) and at 0.45 m/yr (age 30) respectively, while the average PAI of volume steadily tended to increase up to age 80. The growth percentages of dbh, height and volume tended to decrease with age and volume growth percentage was higher than dbh and height.

  • Orders and types of entire functions have been actively investigated by many authors. In this paper, we investigate some basic properties in connection with sum and product of generalized relative order (𝛼, 𝛽), generalized relative type (𝛼, 𝛽) and generalized relative weak type (𝛼, 𝛽) of entire functions with respect to another entire function where 𝛼, 𝛽 are continuous non-negative functions on (-∞, +∞).
