There will inevitably be errors and uncertainties in tire yaw mark related critical speed formula, which is derived merely from the relationship between the centrifugal force and the friction force acting on the point-mass vehicle. Constructing and measuring yaw marks through appropriate simulation works have made it possible to perform uncertainty analysis in calculation of critical speeds under variation of variety of conditions and parameters while existing yaw mark experimental tests have not performed properly. This paper does not present only the critical speed analysis results for parametric sensitivity and uncertainty of chord and middle ordinate, coefficient of friction and road grade, but also modeling uncertainty such as variation of braking level during turning and vehicle size. The yaw mark analysis methods and results may be now applied in practice of traffic accident investigation.
This paper deals with the topological observability analysis and the derivation of a reliability evaluation formula of a measurement system for state estimation. An analogy of the DC power flow method to the DC circuit analysis is introduced, and all the relationship between power flows and phase angles are replaced by the corresponding current-voltage relation. As a result, a set of topological measurement equation expressed in the form of the incidence matrix is derived for the topological analysis, and the observability test is carried out by examining the rank of the measurement matrix. The reliability evaluation formula was derived experimentally by testing the observability of sample systems of IEEE-14, IEEE-3.0, IEEE-57.
The accurate determination of cable tension is important to the monitoring of the condition of a cable-stayed bridge. When applying a vibration-based formula to identify the tension of a real cable under sag, stiffness and boundary conditions, the resulting error must not be overlooked. In this work, by resolving the implicit frequency function of a real cable under the above conditions numerically, indirect methods of determining the cable force and a method to calculate the corresponding cable mode frequency are investigated. The error in the tension is studied by numerical simulation, and an empirical error correction formula is presented by fitting the relationship between the cable force error and cable parameters ${\lambda}^2$ and ${\xi}$. A case study on two real cables of the Shanghai Changjiang Bridge shows that employing the method proposed in this paper can increase the accuracy of the determined cable force and reduce the computing time relative to the time required for the finite element model.

The objective of this paper is to assess the variability of modal properties caused by temperature effects and to adjust modal data used for frequency-based damage detection in plate-girder bridges. First, experiments on model plate-girder bridges are described. Next, the relationship between temperature and natural frequencies is assessed and a set of empirical frequency-correction formula are analyzed for the test structure. Finally, a frequency-based method is used to locate and estimate severity of damage in the test structure using experimental modal data which are adjusted by the frequency-correction formula. Here, local damage in beam-type structures is detected by using measured frequencies and analytical mode shapes.
There are a wide variety of semi-solid ointments used for healing the skin diseases, whose therapeutic and skin penetration abililties may greatly differ from one another depending on the compositions of ointment vehicles. A computer optimization technique was applied to obtain the optimum formula of o/w type ointment giving the in vitro maximum absorption rate through hairless rat skin membrane. Some of the formulations were selected to find out a relationship between skin penetration of ointment and its Theological characteristics. The experimental value of absorption rate obtained from the ointment by optimum formula agreed well with the theoretical value obtained from a polynomial regression analysis, Three kinds of ointments selected among 15 formulations were obtained with a concentric cylinder type rheometer (Model; Rheolab SM-HM Physica, Germany) at 20, 30, 40 and $50^{\circ}C$ for rheograms of rhelolgical properties of o/w type ointments. As the temperature was raised, all products showed a decrease in both shear stress and yield values. The higher skin penetration, the lower shear stress showed.

Call center staffing problems have often relied upon queueing models, which are traditionally used to compute average call waiting time. However, the relationship between the in-bound call volume and call abandon rate is not directly explained even with the complex queueing formula while that relationship is a major interest to the hospital due to profitability. In this paper we provide a novel approach for the call center staffing problem by incorporating the relationship between the in-bound call volume and call abandon rate with a nonlinear integer programming, rather than using the traditional queueing model. We perform numerical analyses with actual data obtained from a reservation call center in a hospital.

Multiple correspondence analysis graphically shows the correspondent relationship among categories in multi-way contingency tables. It is well known that the proportions of the principal inertias as part of the total inertia is low in multiple correspondence analysis. Moreover, although this problem can be overcome by using the Benzecri formula, it is not enough to show clear correspondent relationship among categories (Greenacre and Blasius, 1994, Chapter 10). In addition, they show that Andrews' plot is useful in providing the correspondent relationship among categories. However, this method also does not give some concise interpretation among categories when the number of categories is large. Therefore, in this study, we will easily interpret the multiple correspondence analysis by applying the K-means clustering analysis.
Two varieties of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L cv. Pioneer and Beaver) and timothy (Phleum pratense L cv. Climax and Joliette), grown at different locations in Saskatchewan (Canada), were cut at three stages [1=one week before commercial cut (early bud for alfalfa; joint for timothy); 2=at commercial cut (late bud for alfalfa; pre-bloom head for timothy); 3=one week after commercial cut (early bloom for alfalfa; full head for timothy)]. The energy values of forages were determined using three approaches, including chemical (NRC 2001 formula) and biological approaches (standard in vitro and in situ assay). The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of forage variety and stage of maturity on energy values under the climate conditions of western Canada, and to investigate relationship between chemical (NRC 2001 formula) approach and biological approaches (in vitro and in situ assay) on prediction of energy values. The results showed that, in general, forage species (alfalfa vs. timothy) and cutting stage had profound impacts, but the varieties within each species (Pioneer vs. Beaver in alfalfa; Climax vs. Joliette in timothy) had minimal effects on energy values. As forage maturity increased, the energy contents behaved in a quadratic fashion, increasing at stage 2 and then significantly decreasing at stage 3. However, the prediction methods-chemical approach (NRC 2001 formula) and biological approaches (in vitro and in situ assay) had great influences on energy values. The highest predicted energy values were found by using the in situ approach, the lowest prediction value by using the NRC 2001 formula, and the intermediate values by the in vitro approach. The in situ results may be most accurate because it is closest to simulate animal condition. The energy values measured by biological approaches are not predictable by the chemical approach in this study, indicating that a refinement is needed in accurately predicting energy values.

The purpose of this study is to identify a relationship between the time taken and the characteristics of touch key for touch-screen-based in-vehicle information system (IVIS) and to suggest a new Fitts' law formula that is added a driving speed parameter. Many studies already have shown that Fitts' law is well fitted in various devices for primary tasks, but there is no study of Fitts' law for secondary task in dual-task situation. Fitts' law may not be applied to the secondary task as it is, because the secondary task performance can be affected by the amount of attention for the primary task. To verify this, we carried out an experiment that showed whether pointing task to touch-screen-based IVIS during driving is affected by driving speeds or not. In the experiment, 30 people were volunteered for participants and the participants carried out driving task and pointing task on the screen of IVIS simultaneously. We measured the time to point a touch key on IVIS for every condition (3 driving speeds${\times}5$ touch key sizes${\times}7$ distances between steering wheel and touch key). As a result, there was an effect of driving speed on the pointing time. As we extended the index of difficulty of the conventional Fitts' law formula by incorporating driving speed, we established an extended Fitts' law formula for pointing on IVIS, which showed better accordance with dual task situation. This study can be evidence that secondary task performance is affected by degree of concentration on primary task, and the extended Fitts' law formula can be useful to design interfaces of IVIS.

The comparison of $J_{Rice}$-resistance considering a few strength ratio in Rice J-integral formula and $J_{\delta}$-resistance curves converted from experimental CTOD using appropriate strength chosen according to strain hardening level, n=10.6 (A533B steel) and n=8.1 (BS4360 steel) is carried out. The optimal dimensionless strength ratio like the factor of revision, (see full text)reflecting strain hardening level in Rice\`s experimental formula is found out and the reliability of appropriate reference strength chosen according to strain hardening level in different materials is investigated through doing that CTOD is transformed from $J_{\delta}$-integral using relationship between J-integral and CTOD. The results are as follows; 1) The optimal factor of revision is when m equals to 3 in (see full text) for Rice's and the above optimal factor of revision multiplies by coefficient, η in Rice's experimental formula instead of n=2, 2) and the pertinent reference strength for high strain hardening material like BS4360 steel is ultimate strength, $\sigma_{u}$ and for material like A533B steel is ultimate-flow strength, $\sigma_{u-f}$. The incompatible of the behavior of both experimental J-resistance curves using Rice's formula and CTOD-resistance curves for A533B and BS4360 steel by Gordon, et al., could be corrected using the optimal factor of revision in Rice\`s and the pertinent reference strength in J=$m_{j}$${\times}$$\sigma_{i}$${\times}$CTOD.
