Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets are becoming increasingly popular for strengthening deteriorated concrete bridges due to their excellent strength and stiffness-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and convenience of construction work. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams and to develop a new design formula. Simple beams with 3 m span length were tested to investigate the effect of reinforcing steel ratio and CFRP-reinforcing ratio on the flexural behavior of strengthened RC beams. The test results were analyzed with the special emphasis on the failure mode, the maximum load, and the strain distribution in the section. It is shown that the strain of the strengthened beams is not linearly distributed in the section. A new design formula based on the non-linear distribution of the strain has been derived and showed that it has a good agreement with the various domestic and foreign test results.

This study investigates experimentally flexural behavior and CFB(Carbon Fiber Bar) reinforcing effects of timber sleeper in traditional storied tower house. As a test result, standard sleepers without CFB(Carbon Fiber Bar) reinforcement show flexural cracks at the bottom member at the beginning of loading stage and leads to fracture. However, reinforced specimens with CFB show initial shrinkage at the upper part of specimen by compression, instead of flexural cracks at the bottom, and finally show compressive failure or fracture after failure of CFB and it proves that reinforcing effects by CFB are exerted from early loading. Reinforced specimens showed higher strength in yield strength by 6%~38%, and ultimate strength by 8%~17%, than those of standard specimens. Reinforced specimen is considered that specimen with flexural reinforcement using CFB can expect flexural deflection control effect. Reinforced specimen shows higher ductile coefficient increase of average 141% compared than standard specimens and it proves that higher structural ductile behavior can be expected in reinforced specimens.

An experimental study is needed a reinforcing method for seismic load to apply for RC structures because a lot of earthquakes have frequently happened in the world and those also collapsed infrastructures or damaged human lives. The reinforcing effect of PolyUrea (PU) appeared to be excellent under blast and impact about RC structures. In this study, Stiff Type PolyUrea (STPU) had developed by manipulating the ratio of the components of prepolymer and hardener of PU. And the durability performance evaluation of STPU for deterioration and chemical resistance has been performed. Acid environmental exposure test and ultraviolet (UV) exposure test have been performed as the durability performance evaluation for STPU. Concrete carbonation exposure test and freezing and thawing test for concrete coated with STPU have been performed. The experimental result showed that STPU has high resisting capacity and durability in all tests. Therefore, STPU would be used as seismic reinforcement materials.

In this study, a cyclic loading test was carried out for a reinforced concrete frame installed a TS(tension-spring) damper for the purpose of verifying the seismic strengthening effect of the TS seismic reinforcing method. The test specimens are four specimens of non - reinforced frame and three reinforced frame specimens. Experimental parameters are Shape of damper and construction method of damper. As a result, the construction method of inserting type inside window was twice as much in terms of strength and stiffness, and the method of externally attached type showed a performance improvement of about 2 times in terms of energy dissipation. From these results, it can be confirmed that the TS seismic reinforcing method is a superior method for field application and seismic strengthening.

Epoxy resins are widely used as high performance thermosets in many industrial applications, such as coatings, adhesives and composites. Recently, a lot of research has been carried out in order to improve their mechanical properties and thermal stability in various fields. Carbon nanotubes possess high physical and mechanical properties that are considered to be ideal reinforcing materials in composites. CNT-reinforced epoxy system hold the promise of delivering superior composite materials with their high strength, light weight and multi functional features. Therefore, this study used multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and gamma rays to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy. The diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) as epoxy resins were cured by gamma ray irradiation with well-dispersed MWNTs as a reinforcing agent and triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate (TASHFA) as an initiator. The flexural modulus was measured by UTM (universal testing machine). At this point, the flexural modulus factor exhibits an upper limit at 0.1 wt% MWNT. The thermal properties had improved by increasing the content of MWNT in the result of TGA (thermogravimetric analysis). However, they were decreased with increasing the radiation dose. The change of glass transition temperature by the radiation dose was characterized by DMA (dynamic mechanical analysis).

Composite pressure vessels made through filament winding are widely used in various fields. Numerous studies regarding composite pressure vessels have been conducted in the automotive industry to improve the space efficiency of trunks as well as the fuel efficiency. Compared with steel liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessels used in the conventional LPG vehicles, the use of type 4 composite pressure vessels has advantages in terms of reduction of the weight of vehicles. This study focused on development of type 4 composite pressure vessels that can be installed in the spare tire well. Those type 4 composite pressure vessels are designed with torispherical dome shapes instead of geodecis dome shapes because of the space limitation. To reduce deformation due to the stresses in the axial direction of the vessels, thereby securing the safety of the container, the reinforcing bar concept was applied. A structural analysis software, ABAQUS, confirmed the effect of the reinforcing bar on the axial deformation through the type 4 composite pressure vessel. As a result, the final winding angle of the composite layer was analyzed by applying $26^{\circ}/28^{\circ}/26^{\circ}/28^{\circ}/26^{\circ}/88^{\circ}$ The tensile stress was 939.2 MPa and the compressive stress was 249.3 MPa.
Reinforcing bars, a major component of the pre-fab structure, adheres to the existing on-site assembly method and attempts to develop and commercialize the technology of the pre-assembly method, but the effect is insignificant. Welded Wire / Bar Mat (WBM) has various advantages such as commercialization of rebar through machine manufacturing to improve workability, but it is different from the existing design and the construction method is different from the previous one. Therefore, to maximize the advantages of WBM and improve productivity, manufacturing, transportation, and construction from the design stage should be considered based on BIM from the initial design stage. In this paper, the concept of the design support system for the WBM was established based on the use of BIM in concrete reinforcement and the preliminary research on the WBM. WBM conversion design was performed for the existing prefabricated members, and based on this, the exchange format and system of the master prefabricated model with the WBM design data were set up. As a result of the pilot test, it was found that the traditional reinforcing bar information extracted from the master prefab model has transmitted 100% accurately. As for the WBM information, 100% of the information on the straight reinforcement was transmitted and represented, and the information on the bent reinforcement was found to have a 90% recall in the master BIM tool.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the normalized behaviors of existing bridge foundations reinforced by micropiles. In order to do numerical method a finite element program was used to predict the micropile behavior and quantify their reinforcing effects on existing bridge foundations. In addition, the installation effects of battered micropiles on existing foundations were compared with vertically reinforced bridge foundations. Based on the study performed, it was found that the use of battered micropiles more efficiently reduces displacement of existing foundations than vertically installed micropiles under vertical and horizontal loadings, respectively. The batter angle of micropiles was also found to be most effective at about $15^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}$ in reducing the vertical displacement. The horizontal reinforcing effect continues to be larger with an increase in batter angles. So, it is believed that the results presented could give an idea to enhance In-service performance of existing bridge foundations reinforced by micropiles.
In this study, the flexural test for reinforced high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (R/HPFRCC) members has been conducted in order to investigate the flexural behavior including the effect of an ordinary tensile reinforcing bar. Through the test, it was observed that the flexural strength increased due to the stable tensile stress transfer of HPFRCC, even up to the ultimate state. In addition, no localized crack appeared until the yielding of the reinforcement. From the layered section analysis of the tested members, it was found that the analysis with the tensile model obtained from the tension stiffening test showed better agreement with the flexural test results, whereas the analysis with direct tension test results overestimated the flexural capacity. Through the experimental and analytical studies, two flexural failure modes have been defined in this paper; concrete crushing at the top compression layer or tensile failure at the bottom tensile layer of the beam section. Based on these two flexural failure modes, a simple formula that estimates the ultimate flexural strength of the member has been proposed in this paper. The proposed equations can be useful in a design and an analysis of R/HPFRCC members.

Flexible base isolation bearings that separate superstructure from ground have been widely used in the construction field because they make a significant contribution to increasing the fundamental period of the structure, thereby decreasing response acceleration transmitted into the superstructure. However, the established bearing devices installed to uphold the whole building give rise to some problems involved with failure and collapse due to lack of the capacity as modern structures are getting more massive and higher. Therefore, this study suggests new isolation bearings assembled with additional restrainers enabled to reinforcing and recentering, and then evaluates their performance to withstand the seismic load. The superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) bars are installed into the conventional lead-rubber bearing (LRB) devices in order to provide recentering forces. These new systems are modeled as component spring models for the purpose of conducting nonlinear dynamic analyses with near fault ground motion data. The LRB devices with steel bars are also designed and analyzed to compare their responses with those of new systems. After numerical analyses, ultimate strength, maximum displacement, permanent deformation, and recentering ratio are compared to each model with an aim to investigate which base isolation models are superior. It can be shown that LRB models with superelastic SMA bars are superior to other models compared to each other in terms of seismic resistance and recentering effect.
