This study sought to understand the mechanical behavior according to the shape of the connecting part of the hybrid beam. This part is composed of central steel. with the end reinforced by concrete in the experiment of cyclic loading. The experimental result was compared and verified with the ultimate strength formula. Likewise, the composite effect and the effectiveness of seismic capacity and stress transmission were examined. The types of each setup were as follows: main bars by welding type, reinforcing by end-plate type, reinforcing by shear connector type, and shear connector type. Results showed that the reinforcing by end-plate type and the shear connector type had excellent strength and seismic capacity as well as better stress transmission. This was due to the unity between reinforced concrete and the steel's connecting part. However, the experimental result was somehow different from the previously established ultimate strength formula. Thus, a definite ultimate strength formula is required.
The corrosion of steel reinforcing bar(re-bar) has been the major cause of the reinforced concrete deterioration. FRP(Fiber-reinforced polymer) reinforcing bar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. However, FRP re-bar is pone to deteriorate due to other degradation mechanisms than those for steel. The high alkalinity of concrete, for instance, is a possible degradation source. Other potentially FRP re-bar aggressive environments are sea water, acid solution and fresh water/moisture. In this study long-term durability performance of FRP re-bar were evaluated. The mechanical and durability properties of two type of CFRP-, GFRP re-bar and one type of AFRP re-bar were investigated; the FRP re-bars were subjected to alkaline solution acid solution, salt solution and deionized water. The mechanical and durability properties were investigated by performing tensile, compressive and short beam tests. Experimental results confirmed the desirable resistance of FRP re-bar to aggressive chemical environment.
In this paper, a new hybrid fiber system (NHFS) is investigated for the application of slab. The steel fiber, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) whisker is added to form NHFS. The four-point bending test is carried out on the flexural properties of slab with plain, steel fiber, traditional hybrid fiber system (THFS) and NHFS reinforced cementitious composites. The flexural behavior is evaluated by ASTM C1018-97, JCI-SF4 and post-crack strength (PCS) technique. The evaluation parameters of flexural toughness such as toughness index (TI), equivalent flexural strength (EFS) and PCS are determined. The size of slab specimens is $15mm(thickness){\times}50mm(width){\times}200mm(length)$. The results show that adding $CaCO_3$ whisker to THFS can significantly improve the flexural strength, TI, EFS, PCS of the slab. The empirical relation between reinforcing index ($RI_v$) and flexural parameters show that flexural parameters of slabs increase first and then decrease; which indicates that optimum $RI_v$ values can be helpful in the considering the mix design of steel-PVA fibers-$CaCO_3$ whisker composites for achieving the desired flexural-related properties. The scanning electron microscopy is performed to observe the micro-morphological characteristics of the fracture surface, which proved the positive hybrid effect among the different fibers in cementitious composites. The NHFS can arrest the generation and propagation of the crack from micro to macro level.

This paper describes a new numerical analysis technique in stability analysis for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails. The installing effect of pressure grouted soil nails can be simulated in this method. Shear strength reduction method associated with finite element method is used for slope stability analysis. Factors of safety for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails are compared with those for a natural slope and a slope reinforced with gravity grouted soil nails in order to investigate their reinforcing effects. More than 50% increase in the factor of safety is obtained when the slope is reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails compared to the one with gravity grouted soil nails. The reinforcing effects of pressure grouted soil nails become obvious with increase in their length. The reinforcing mechanism of the pressure grouted soil nails for the slope stability can be explained by the slope failure surface expanding gradually toward the backfill. The increased stability of the slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails results mainly from their improved pull-out resistance.

In this study, new moment-resisting precast concrete beam-column joint is proposed for moderate seismic regions. It has the connection reinforcing bars, penetrated the joint and lap-spliced with the bottom bars of precast U-shaped PC beam. To evaluate the performance for noncontact lapped splice, experimental and analytical works were conducted. Major variables for tests are the length of lap, the diameter of connection reinforcing bars, and the distance between lapped bars. Analytic research was performed nonlinear finite element method. Analytic research focused on crack pattern, load-deflection curve, comparison of internal force, evaluation of ductility strains of reinforcement bar. Results of experimental and analytical works show that the these variables has much influence on flexural strength and ductility, and joint behavior.
In construction of buildings in Korea, the buildings are frequently founded on the weathered ground (weathered soil/rock, fractured rock). In this case, to make a full use of a bearing capacity of a weathered ground for economic design, the shallow mat foundation system could be used. In this study, we have researched three cases of mat foundations on the weathered ground in Korea, and analyzed and considered the design procedures and the reinforcing methods. That is, we have considered the detail design, analysis proceedings, the ground settlement evaluation proceedings, the rock face mapping evaluations after excavation and reinforcing methods of the mat foundation on the weathered ground. And large scale plate load tests on the weathered ground supporting the mat foundation were performed and also load bearing capacity and settlement of actual mat foundation, considering the scale effect, were evaluated.
The effect of fiber reinforcing materials on the fracture strength of composite resin was evaluated. Each ten composite resin bars reinforced by glassfiber[Fiber-Splint ML$^{(R)}$(Polydentia SA, Switzerland)], polyethylene fiber [Ribbond$^{(R)}$(Ribbond Inc., U.S.A.)] and polyaramid fiber[Kevlar$^{(R)}$(DuPont, U.S.A.)] were loaded under the 3-point compression technique. Another ten pure composite resin bars without reinforcement were used as a control group. Then mean fracture strength and standard deviation were calculated and a ANOVA and Scheffe test were used in statistics. The results were as follows: 1. Kevlar group showed the highest fracture strength as 175.5MPa (p<0.05). Fiber-Splint ML group showed the lowest fracture strength as 112.7MPa. 2. The mean value of fracture strength in Ribbond group was 136.4MPa, and that of unterated control group was 143.6MPa. No difference was found between the two groups. 3. Ribbond and Kevlar reinforcement groups showed a catastrophic failure, where complete separation of pieces occurs to a unseparated fracture pattern. The use of Kevlar reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant increase in the average load failure and the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation present in the unreinforced samples. The use of Ribbond reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed no significant increase in the average load failure. However, the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation. Because high strength of glassfiber are rapidly degraded on exposure to moisture and humidity. The use of Fiber-Splint ML reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant decrease in the average load failure and displayed catastrophic fractures.
Generally, to evaluate a slope stability of the geosynthetic reinforced soil slope, the modified version of limit equilibrium method can be used. In most cases, resisting effects of reinforcement are dealt with considering an increased shear strength on the potential slip surface. However, it is not clear that the methods satisfy all three equilibrium equations. In this study, the new slope stability analysis method in which not only reinforcing effects of geosynthetics can be considered but also all three equilibrium equation can be satisfied is proposed. A number of illustrative examples, including published load test of large-scale reinforced retaining wall and centrifuge model tests on the geotextile reinforced soil slopes, are also analyzed. As a result, it is shown that the newly suggested method produces a relatively accurate factor of safety.
In this study, to determine the priority of the effect factors and the preferences of commonly used reinforcing methods for the cut-slope, the reasonable analysis using AHP technique was performed. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique is the most widely used method out of all existing decision making methods. On choosing the methods, the most important factor is analyzed to be the stability and durability. Stability, durability and environmental compatibility took up over 50% of the total contributing factors. Cut-slope reinforced method preference with increasing stability method confirmed that concrete retaining wall, reinforced-soil wall and cutting method showed the highest preference rate. Also, in practical field conditions, the cutting method out of four methods was chosen to be the most effective method. This reflected that the methods that are equally superior in all aspects of evaluation factors are more important than the methods with superiority in highly prioritized evaluation factors.

This study established a BIM procedure considering manufacturing errors in the production process, and evaluated the flexural ductility of precast all-lightweight aggregate concrete special shear walls (PLASWs) with spliced sleeve technique. In the production process, the concrete cover thickness of PALSW was on average 1.28 times greater than the cross-sectional details of the specimen modeled with Revit BIM program. In particular, the bending inner radius of the hoop and inner-cross tie were greater than the designed details. Consequently, the confinement effect of core concrete reduced from 64% to 54% due to the manufacturing errors in the transverse reinforcing bars, resulting in a decrease in the ductility of PALSW by approximately 4.91%. Considering these findings, the BIM of PLASW with spliced sleeve technique should compliment the bending inner radius of the transverse reinforcing bars, and the defined brittleness increase coefficient reflecting the decreased core concrete confining pressure in the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete should be evaluated as 1.8.
