A renewable energy storage pile foundation system is being developed through a multi-disciplinary research project. This system intends to use reinforced concrete pile foundations configured with hollowed sections to store renewable energy generated from solar panels attached to building structures in the form of compressed air. However previous research indicates that the compressed air will generate considerable high circumferential tensile stresses in the concrete pile, which requires unrealistic high hoop reinforcement ratio to avoid leakage of the compressed air. One possible solution is to utilize fiber reinforced concrete instead of placing the hoop reinforcement to resist the tensile stress. This paper investigates nonlinear structural responses and post-cracking behavior of the fiber reinforced concrete pile subjected to high air pressure through nonlinear finite element simulations. Concrete damage plasticity models were used in the simulation. Several parameters were considered in the study including concrete grade, fiber content, and thickness of the pile section. The air pressures which the pile can resist at different crack depths along the pile section were identified. Design recommendations were provided for the energy storage pile foundation using the fiber reinforced concrete.
The purpose of this paper is to provide an experimental and analytical study on the reinforced large diameter pretensioned high strength concrete (R-LDPHC) pile. R-LDPHC pile was reinforced with infilled concrete, longitudinal, and transverse rebar to increase the flexural and shear strength of conventional large diameter PHC (LDPHC) pile without changing dimension of the pile. To evaluate the shear and flexural strength enhancement effects of R-LDPHC piles compared with conventional LDPHC pile, a two-point loading tests were conducted under simple supported conditions. Nonlinear analysis on the basis of the conventional layered sectional approach was also performed to evaluate effects of infilled concrete and longitudinal rebar on the flexural strength of conventional LDPHC pile. Moreover, ultimate strength design method was adopted to estimate the effect of transverse rebar and infilled concrete on the shear strength of a pile. The analytical results were compared with the results of the bending and shear test. Test results showed that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile were increased by 2.3 times and 3.3 times compared to those of the conventional LDPHC pile, respectively. From the analytical study, it was found that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile can be predicted by the analytical method by considering rebar and infilled concrete effects, and the average difference of flexural strength between experimental results and calculated result was 10.5% at the ultimate state.
In order to improve the shear strength of conventional pre-tensioned spun high strength concrete (PHC) pile, concrete-infilled composite PHC (ICP) pile, a PHC pile reinforced by means of shear reinforcement and infilled concrete, is proposed. Two types of specimens were cast and tested according to KS (Korean Standards) to verify the shear strength enhancement of ICP pile. Based on the test results, it was found that the KS method was not suitable due to causing shear failure of ICP pile. However, shear strength enhancement was clearly verified. The obtained shear strength of the ICP pile was more than twice that of conventional PHC pile. In addition, the shear strength of ICP pile reinforced with longitudinal reinforcement was estimated to be more than 2.5 times greater than that of conventional PHC pile. The allowable shear force of ICP pile, which was determined by the allowable stress design process, indicated a large safety factor of more than 2.9 compared to the test results.
The pile construction method is changing from the pile driving operation to the injected precast pile method. It is to prevent environmental damage and to minimize complaints caused by noise. Therefore, economic alternatives optimized for the injected precast pile method are required. In this study, the enhanced spun reinforced concrete piles manufactured by high strength materials were proposed. Experimental tests were conducted to evaluate their structural safety and nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to improve the reliability of experimental results. The experimental results and the analytical results were in good agreement with each other and the proposed enhanced spun reinforced concrete pile has better performance than that required by the design. However, the performance of the joint using the existing method used in the PHC pile was considered to be insufficient.
A zinc mesh sacrificial anode cathodic protection method is recently being developed to protect the reinforced concrete structure in a marine environment. However, comprehensive information regarding the cathodic protection technology applied to reinforced concrete test specimens utilizing zinc mesh sacrificial anodes remains limited. Particularly, no research has investigated the effective range of sacrificial anode cathodic protection in a reinforced concrete structure regarding the transmission of protection current from zinc mesh sacrificial anode to the reinforced concrete structure, particularly concerning effects of temperature variations. This study examined the distribution of potential and current using a long single rebar and several segment reinforcing bars inside a horizontal beam. Vertical pile specimens were applied with a zinc mesh sacrificial anode to simulate concrete bridges or harbor structures. To check the effect of cathodic protection, cathodic protection potential and current of the reinforced concrete specimens were measured and 100 mV depolarization criterion test was performed. It was confirmed that effect of cathodic protection varied depending on resistivity and temperature. The cathodic protection test of pile specimens revealed that the maximum reachable range of cathodic protection current was 10 cm from the waterline as observed in the experiment.

Composite piles have been used in ground conditions where conventional piles are unsuitable or uneconomical. They may consist of a combination of timber and concrete pile in Europe. One method of doing this was to drive a steel tube to just below water level, and a concrete pile was lowered down it and driven to the required level where corrosion was susceptible in U.K. Recently, a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite pile was developed to use in many marine locations for piers and waterfront buildings in the USA(Hoy, 1995; Phair, 1997). A steel composite (SC) pile reinforced concrete spun pile with steel tube was also proposed and used for the foundation acting a high lateral earthquake load. Composite piles have been developed and researched to increase lateral resistance or to prevent corrosion in marine structures. In paper, the composite pile consisting of the steel upper portion and the concrete lower portion is proposed and are carried out several tests to confirm the capacity of the pile such as lateral load test, dynamic load tests and bending test. It is noted that the composite pile would be a economical pile being capable of increasing lateral resistance.

The purpose of this study is to present a model for analyzing construction errors of reinforced concrete pile foundations using drones. First, a drone is used to obtain an aerial image of the construction site, and an orthomosaic image is generated based on those images. Then, the circular pile foundation is automatically recognized from the orthomosaic image by using the Hough transform circle detection method. Finally, the distance is calculated based on the the center point of the reinforced concrete pile foundation in the overlapped data. As a case study, the proposed concrete concrete pile foundation construction quality control model was applied to the real construction site in Incheon to evaluate the proposed model.

The sectional methods of current design codes have been broadly used for the design of various kinds of reinforced concrete pile caps. Lately, the strut-tie model approach of current design codes also became one of the attracting methods for pile caps. However, since the sectional methods and the strut-tie model approach of current design codes have been established by considering the behaviors of structural concrete without D-regions and two-dimensional concrete structures with D-regions, respectively, it is inappropriate to apply the methods to the pile caps dominated by 3-dimensional structural behavior with disturbed stress regions. In this study, the refined 3-dimensional strut-tie models, which consider the strength characteristics of 3-dimensional concrete struts and nodal zones and the load-carrying capacity of concrete ties in tension regions, are proposed for the rational analysis and design of pile caps. To examine the validity of the proposed models and to verify the necessity of appropriate constituent elements for describing 3-dimensional structural behavior and load-transfer mechanism of pile caps, the ultimate strength of 78 reinforced concrete pile caps tested to failure was examined by the proposed models along with the sectional and strut-tie model methods of current design codes.

Concrete infill and reinforcement are one of the most well-known strengthening methods of structural elements. This study investigated flexural performance of concrete infill composite PHC pile (ICP pile) reinforced by infill concrete and longitudinal rebars in hollow PHC pile. A total four series of pile specimens were tested by four points bending method under simply supported conditions and investigated bending moment experimentally and analytically. From the test results, it was found that although reinforcement of infilled concrete on the pure bending moment of PHC pile was negligible, reinforcement of PHC pile using infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars increase the maximum bending moment with range from 1.95 to 2.31 times than that of conventional PHC pile. The error of bending moment between experimental results and predicted results by nonlinear sectional analysis on the basis of the conventional layered sectional approach was in the range of -2.54 % to 2.80 %. The axial compression and moment interaction analysis for ICP piles shows more significant strengthening effects of infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars.
Existing method protruding strands that are embedded in PHC pile to connect pile head and foundation slab shows poor constructibility. As this causes crack and damage in pile head and casualties often occurs in construction site during the work, alternative method called one-cutting method, in which pile above the ground surface and strands embedded in pile are completely cut and pile head is reinforced with rebar for connection with foundation slab, is currently adopted. However, the capacity of details for these methods are not mechanically proved. In this study, in order to suggest proper details of reinforcement for one-cutting method, failures due to lack of shear resistance between infilled concrete and PHC pile are analyzed through experiments and embedded depth with infilled concrete inside PHC pile is suggested. Assuming that slip failure strength is 0.4MPa, which is obtained from experiment conservatively, to have rebar yielded before slip failure, minimum depth of infilled concrete for PHC 450 and PHC 500, need to be 600mm above, and for PHC 600, 1,000mm above.
