  • The purpose of this study is to investigate size effect on inelastic behavior of reinf bridge piers subjected to cyclic load. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Co Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technologr), for the analysis of reinforced concret was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressiv models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel The smeared crack app incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is conne discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same d amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel. To determine th on bridge pier inelastic behavior, a 1/4-scale replicate model was also loaded for compar full-scale bridge pier behavior.

Seismic performance and damage assessment of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels

  • It is known that lap splices in the longitudinal reinforcement of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns are not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were practically located in the potential plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the 1992 seismic design provisions of the Korea Bridge Design Specification. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, to develop an enhancement scheme for their seismic capacity by retrofitting with glassfiber sheets, and to assess a damage of bridge columns subjected to seismic loadings for the development of rational seismic design provisions in low or moderate seismicity region. Nine (9) test specimens with an aspect ratio of 4 were made with three confinement ratios and three types of lap splice. Quasi-static tests were conducted in a displacement-controlled way under three different axial loads. A significant reduction of displacement ductility was observed for test columns with lap splices of longitudinal reinforcements, whose displacement ductility could be greatly improved by externally wrapping with glassfiber sheets in the plastic hinge region. A damage of the limited ductile specimen was assessed to be relatively small.

  • This research aims at evaluating the seismic performance of the existing R/C bridge piers, which were seismically designed in accordance with the provision of moderate confinement design code (Eurocode 8). The work presented in this paper experimentally investigates the ductility and hysteretic behavior of circular reinforced concrete columns with moderate confinement. Pseudo-dynamic tests have been carried out on two scaled R/C column specimens to investigate their hysteretic behavior and other seismic performance.

A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. An unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method, that can represent the interaction between tendon and concrete of prestressed concrete member, is used. A joint element is newly developed to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints. The proposed numerical method for the inelastic behavior of precast segmental prestressed concrete bridge piers is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

Test for the influence of socket connection structure on the seismic performance of RC prefabricated bridge piers

  • In order to obtain the impact of socket connection interface forms and socket gap sizes on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) socket prefabricated bridge piers, quasi-static tests for three socket prefabricated piers with different column-foundation connection interface forms and reserved socket gap sizes, as well as to the corresponding cast-in-situ reinforced concrete piers, were carried out. The influence of socket connection structure on various seismic performance indexes of socket prefabricated piers was studied by comparing and analyzing the hysteresis curve and skeleton curve obtained through the experiment. Results showed that the ultimate failure mode of the socket prefabricated pier with circumferential corrugated treatment at the connection interface was the closest to that of the monolithic pier, the maximum bearing capacity was slightly less than that of the cast-in-situ pier but larger than that of the socket pier with roughened connection interface, and the displacement ductility and accumulated energy consumption capacity were smaller than those of socket piers with roughened connection interface. The connection interface treatment form had less influence on the residual deformation of socket prefabricated bridge piers. With the increase in the reserved socket gap size between the precast pier column and the precast foundation, the bearing capacity of the prefabricated socket bridge pier component, as well as the ductility and residual displacement of the component, would be reduced and had unfavorable effect on the energy dissipation property of the bridge pier component.

  • Seismic design for new built bridges has been considered which is being used now. However, before the revised code for seismic design is issued, the reinforced concrete bridge piers which has been built and being used are pretty weak under the lateral seismic load. experiments of bridge piers are done under iterative lateral load, according to experimental results, the influence of Nikon-Chrome alloy steel barson performance of bridge piers is analyzed, also the shape effect of anti-seismic reinforcement on pier behavior is discussed.

  • This study investigates the seismic performance of new hollow reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers with triangular reinforcement details. The developed triangular reinforcement details are economically feasible and rational, and facilitate shorter construction periods. We tested a model of new hollow RC bridge piers with triangular reinforcement details under a constant axial load and a quasi-static, cyclically reversed horizontal load. We used a computer program, Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology (RCAHEST), for analysis of RC structures. The used numerical method gives a realistic prediction of seismic performance throughout the loading cycles for several hollow pier specimens investigated. As a result, developed triangular reinforcement details for material quantity reduction was equal to existing reinforcement details in terms of required performance.

This research is to evacuate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, and to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with glassfiber sheets and to develop appropriate limited ductility design concept in low or moderate seismicity region. Nine test specimens in the aspect ratio of 4.0 were made with three confinement ratios and three types of lap splicing. Quasi-static tests under three different axial load levees were conducted. It has been observed that displacement ductility ratios of test columns with lap splicing were significantly reduced.
