  • This case reports describe a new approach to the use of polymers in orthodontics, using a fiber reinforced composite(FRC). FRC was successfully used in a periodontal splints, fiber post for endodontic use, orthodontic retainer and space maintainers, implant prosthesis, large span bridge, management of cracked tooth, anchorage reinforcement in orthodontics. FRC has highly favorable mechanical properties, and its strength-to-weight ratios is superior to those of most alloys. FRC has potential for use in many applications in dentistry and is expected to gain increasing application and popularity in dentistry. These case reports show that FRC is a promising anchorage reinforcement material for use in orthodontic practice.

  • This paper discusses the composite mechanism and its effect upon the behavior of a steel reinforced concrete (SRC) member subjected to a flexural load. The relationship between member strength and deformation is established using the bond strength between the steel and reinforced concrete. An analytical model is proposed and used to incorporate the sectional strains and bond strength at the elastic and inelastic stages for moment-curvature relationship derivation. The results from the flexural load tests are used to validate the accuracy of the proposed model. Comparisons between the experimental information and the analytical results demonstrate close moment-curvature relevance, which justifies the applicability of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents nonlinear oscillations of a carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam subjected to lateral harmonic load with damping effect based on the modified couple stress theory. As reinforcing phase, three different types of single walled carbon nanotubes distribution are considered through the thickness in polymeric matrix. The non-linear strain-displacement relationship is considered in the von Kármán nonlinearity. The governing nonlinear dynamic equation is derived with using of Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The frequency response equation and the forced vibration response of the system are obtained. Effects of patterns of reinforcement, volume fraction, excitation force and the length scale parameter on the nonlinear responses of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam are investigated.

  • This paper investigates dynamic characteristics of a graphene nanoplatelets reinforced composite (GNPRC) sandwich doubly curved shell based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and Hamilton's principle. The sandwich doubly curved shell is fabricated from a core made of honeycomb materials sandwiched by composite GNPs reinforced face-sheets. Effective materials properties of composite face-sheets are assumed to vary based on Halpin-Tsai micromechanical models and rule of mixture. Furthermore, the material properties of honeycomb core are estimated using Gibson's formula. The fundamental frequencies of the shell are computed with changes of main geometrical and material properties such as amount and distribution type of graphene nanoplatelets, side length ratio, thickness to length ratio of and side length ratio of honeycomb. The Navier's technique is presented to obtain responses. Accuracy and trueness of the present model and analytical solution is confirmed through comparison of the results with available results in literature. It is concluded that an increase in thickness to length ratio yields a softer core with lower natural frequencies. Furthermore, increase in height to length ratio leads to significant decrease in natural frequencies.

  • This investigation presents nonlinear free vibration of a carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam based on the Von Kármán nonlinearity and the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory The material properties of the structure is considered as made of a polymeric matrix by reinforced carbon nanotubes according to different material distributions. The governing equations of the nonlinear vibration problem is delivered by using Hamilton's principle and the Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The nonlinear natural frequency and the nonlinear free response of the system is obtained with the effect of different patterns of reinforcement.

  • As the first step in discussing the reliability of composite structures, a fundamental study was performed to obtain the scattering characteristics of glass-fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) and woven carbon fiber reinforced plastics (WCFRP) as well as a reference metal. The Euler buckling load was obtained experimentally for each material. The experiments were conducted for specified rectangular specimens with simply supported edges. A new attachment to realize the simply support boundary conditions for composite materials have been prepared before these experiments. The scattering data in the results for GFRP and WCFRP composites were compared with those of a typical metal of aluminum alloy. The experimental data were also compared with numerical simulations including the uncertainties.

  • This paper presents a careful theoretical investigation into interfacial stresses in composite aluminum-slab reinforced concrete beam bonded by a prestressed hybrid carbon-glass composite material. The model is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility requirements in and all parts of the strengthened beam, i.e., the aluminum beam, the slab reinforced concrete, the hybrid carbon-glass composite plate and the adhesive layer. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions. Numerical results from the present analysis are presented both to demonstrate the advantages of the present solution over existing ones and to illustrate the main characteristics of interfacial stress distributions. It is shown that the stresses at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam. This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behaviour of the interface and design of the hybrid structures.
