  • The purpose of this study is to assess the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns using inelastic finite element analysis. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Damage index aims to provide a means of quantifying numerically the damage in reinforced concrete bridge columns sustained under earthquake loading. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge columns is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • The wheel load distribution width for lane load is not specified in current Korea bridge design code(KD code), not like in current AASHTO and AASHTO LRFD specifications which specity it as twice of wheel load distribution width for wheel load. In this study, the wheel load distribution width in continuous reinforced concrete slab bridge is investigated. The major variables affecting the wheel load distribution of a reinforced concrete continuous slab bridge are the span length, bridge width, existence edge beam and boundary condition. From a series of comprehensive parametric study on each variable, the formula for wheel load distribution in continuous reinforced concrete slab bridge is proposed from the nonlinear regression analysis of finite element analysis results. The proposed formulas can be used efficiently in the accurate design of continuous reinforced concrete slab bridges.

  • This paper presents design specifications and characteristics of bridge expansion joints to develop new type-joints in fiber reinforced polymer decks. Based on properties of the fiber reinforced polymer decks and fundamental process to calculate their expansion length, new expansion joints fur fiber reinforced polymer decks on typical steel or concrete girder are developed and proposed.

  • In this study, the tests were performed on a series of reinforced concrete strip specimens to investigate a cracking behavior of reinforced concrete voided slab bridge. Also, the mid-span deflections, the crack widths and failure mode of reinforced concrete strip specimens were studied. It was found that serviceability of cracking and deflection at reinforced concrete voided slab bridge which were constructed and designed under verifying serviceability as design criteria are lower than common reinforced concrete member. On the basis of the experimental results, it is more reasonable concrete to evaluate crack occurring $f_r=2.0\surd{f_{ck}}$ rather than modulus of rupture of concrete, $f_r=0.8\surd{f_{ck}}$

  • In order to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers, an inelastic time-dependent element is proposed. The proposed element enables increased characteristics due to structural intervention (i.e., repair and retrofitting) to be accurately reflected to the degraded strength and stiffness of the members. Comparative studies are conducted for reinforced concrete bridge columns being repaired and retrofitted and show good correlation between analytical prediction and experimental results. In addition, a nonlinear time-history analysis of a reinforced concrete bridge under multiple earthquakes confirms the applicability and effectiveness of the present development.

  • This study aims towards the improvement of a reinforced concrete rigid-frame bridge in an effort to reduce the construction and maintenance costs, and achieve an improved seismic performance. Correspondingly, a new structural rigid connection is proposed for H-shaped steel girders and reinforcing bars at the corner of the rigid-frame structure. Both experiments and numerical analyses were performed. Prototype models were constructed and subjected to static loading tests to reveal their load-carrying capacity and failure mode. Numerical models were then developed using finite elements to evaluate the experimental results. Analyses elicited good agreement between simulation and experimental data and validated the numerical models. Moreover, the validity of the proposed rigid connection was confirmed, and the failure behavior was clarified. Finally, a full-size model of the reinforced concrete rigid-frame bridge with H-shaped steel girders was constructed and subjected to destructive loading tests to evaluate structural integrity of the proposed rigid connection.

  • In this paper, two dimensional and three dimentional modeling techniques are proposed for the failure analysis of deteriorated reinforced concrete T-girder bridge subjected to cyclic loading up to failure. For the nonlinear failure anaysis, a tension stiffening model which can consider degradation of bond between reinforcement and surrounding concrete due to corrision of rebars in old bridge is proposed and a modeling technique for the supports conditions of the bridges which can consider degradation of bearing at supports in old bridge is also proposed, The analysis results along with comparisons with full-scale failure-test results confirm that finite element modeling techniques in this paper can be well applied to the failure analyses of in-situ old reinforced concrete T-girder bridges subjected to cyclic loading and the support condition modeling especially affects the bridge strength significantly.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of existing bridge foundation reinforced by battered micropiles. In order to do numerical method using a Finite element program was used to predict the micropile behavior and quantify their reinforcing effect to existing bridge foundations. In addition, effect of battered micropiles on existing foundations was compared with vertically reinforced bridge foundations. Based on the study performed, it was found that the use of battered micropile is more efficiently reducing displacement of existing foundation than vertically installed micropiles under vertical and horizontal loadings respectively. The batter angle of micropile was also found effective about $15^{\circ}\sim20^{\circ}$ to reduce the vortical displacement. The horizontal reinforcement effect is continuously larger with an increase in batter angle. So, it is believed that the results presented could give an idea to enhance in-service performance of existing bridge foundations reinforced by micropiles.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior of hollow reinforced concrete bridge columns under varying axial load. The role of the variable axial load is very important in the ductility, strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The proposed numerical method for the inelastic behavior of hollow reinforced concrete bridge columns under varying axial load is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.
