The Effects of Aquatic Excercise Program on the Physical Function and Depression in Community Elderly (수중운동 프로그램이 지역사회 노인의 신체기능과 우울에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of an aquatic exercise program on the physical function and depression among the community elderly. The subjects were 41 cases of aged over 65 who went to elderly college in Hawsung-Kun, Kyeongkee province. Seventeen of them were assigned to control group, while twenty four subjects to the experimental group. The period of data collection was from June., 1999 to November., 1999. The aquatic exercise program was developed by the author with the assistance of rehabilitation medicine doctor and physical therapist in the public health center. The program was carried out once a week for 6 months in regular swimming pool. Data were analyzed with t-test, $X^2$ test, ANCOVA. paired t-test using SAS 6.12. Results were obtained as follows: 1. The increments in the range of motion of the shoulder and knee joints in experimental group after exercise was significantly greater than those in the control group. 2. The physical pain score decreases significantly after the exercise in the experimental group only. 3. The experimental group revealed lower level of depression after exercise than the level before the exercise, whereas control group showed no significant changes in this level. These findings may indicate that the aquatic exercise program is effective in increasing the range of motion of shoulder and knee joints and also effective in decreasing pain, the level of depression. Accordingly. the aquatic exercise program can be adopted as an health promotion program for community elderly.

  • This study examined the wearing conditions of compression wear for weight training. Compression wear has recently received significant attention from the public and athletes as high-level functional sportswear. The survey was conducted on 373 men in their 20s for general information on purchase behavior, preferred brand, function, and preferred design. The majority of participants (n=181) were aware of the function of compression wear. The most selected reason for wearing compression wear was for its convenience during sports activities. Respondents had the greatest preference for designs with a round neckline, regular leggings type, upper arm-length sleeve, and thigh-length bottom. Respondents also wanted a stronger compression in the core muscle part (abdomen, back, and waist).

  • The purposes of this study are to develop three-layered Green-Ampt infiltration model considering temporal variation of physical properties of soil and to evaluate the model with field experiment on bare-tilled and soybean-growing soil plots under natural rainfalls. Infiltration tests were conducted on a sandy loam soil. The model has three-layered soil profile including a surface crust, a tilled layer, a subsoil and considers temporal variation of porosity, hydraulic conductivity, capillary pressure head on a tilled layer by natural rainfalls and canopy density variation of crop. Field measurement of porosity, average hydraulic conductivity and average capillary presure head on a tilled layer were conducted by soil sampler and air-entry permeameter at regular intervals-after tillage. It was found that temporal variation of porosity and average hydraulic conductivity might be expressed as a function of cumulative rainfall energy and average capillary pressure head might be expressed as a function of porosity of a tilled soil. The model was calibrated by an optimization technique, Hooke and Jeeves method using hourly surface runoff data. With the calibrated parameters, the model was verified satisfactorily.

On the mitigation of surf-riding by adjusting center of buoyancy in design stage

  • High-speed vessels are prone to the surf-riding in adverse quartering seas. The possibility of mitigating the surf-riding of the ITTC A2 fishing vessel in the design stage is investigated using the 6-DOF weakly non-linear model developed for surf-riding simulations in quartering seas. The longitudinal position of the ship's center of buoyancy (LCB) is chosen as the design parameter. The adjusting of LCB is achieved by changing frame area curves, and hull surfaces are reconstructed accordingly using the Radial Basis Function (RBF). Surf-riding motions in regular following seas for cases with different LCBs and Froude numbers are simulated using the numerical model. Results show that the surf-riding cannot be prevented by the adjusting of LCB. However, it occurs with a higher threshold speed when ship's center of buoyancy (COB) is moved towards stem compared to moving towards stern, which is mainly due to the differences on wave resistance caused by the adjusting of LCB.

  • Maintaining adequate residual chlorine concentration is an important criteria to provide secure drinking water. The chlorine decay can be influenced by unstable flow due to the transient event caused by operation of hydraulic devices in the pipeline system. In order to understand the relationship between the transient event and the chlorine decay, the probability density function based on the water demand curve of a hypothetical water distribution system was used. The irregular transient events and the same number of events with regular interval were assumed and the fate of chlorine decay was compared. The chlorine decay was modeled using a generic chlorine decay model with optimized parameters to minimize the root mean square error between the experimental chlorine concentration and the simulated chlorine concentration using genetic algorithm. As a result, the chlorine decay can be determined through the number of transients regardless of the occurrence intervals.

  • The purpose of this study was to restorate a patient who has a few remaining teeth with #15,23,24 supported Konus telescope denture in Maxillar and #44,43,33,34 supported Dolder bar retained overdenture in Mandible. Konus telescope and bar retained overdenture was taken better results in retention, support, stability compair with regular Removable partial denture. In Removable partial denture, the change of remaining teeth and edentulous ridge is natural. But Konus telescope and bar retained overdenture is a little effected in this change, so it is possiblble in long-term use. In cosider of patient's medical history and the possibility of additional tooth loss, Konus telescope denture can be easily repaired. Compaired with Konus telescope and bar retained overdenture showed high stability and easy cleansing because of rigid support, cross - arch splinting, and simple design. In delivery, patient had a difficulty with removal of denture and plaque control, but showed better condition, good oral hygienic care. Patient satisfied with denture functionally and esthetically. This study showed Konus telescope and bar retained overdenture was effective for treatment of patient remaing a few teeth in function, esthetic and psycologic satisfaction.

A Study on Architectural tools and Woodworking in Baekje (백제의 건축연장과 치목기술에 관한 연구)

  • History of architecture technology is the area where further studies are the most needed in Korean architecture history. This present study deals with architectural tools and woodworking of Baekje as a first step in exploration of Korean architecture technology history especially, that of Baekje dynasty. Based on the study of real artifacts and archeological sites showing the trace of tool use, function and forms of architectural tools were classified, characteristics of tools investigated, and woodworking technology analyzed. The main tools of analysis include Square, Black Inkpot, Hatchet, Saw, Chisel, Wood Hammer, Axe, and Plane. It is assumed that architectural technology during Baekje dynasty might have leapt into the new stage thanks to the regular use of iron tools. Compared to those of previous eras, iron tools of Baekje are more elaboratedly-designed and well-defined in function. In addition, wooden architectural tools from Baekje demonstrate the superiority of its woodworking technology Historical record also shows the fact that craftsman from Baekje participated in construction of temples of Shilla and Japan. Precise assessment of Baeje architecture technology is difficult because no Baekje wooden architecture is still remaining. The facts mentioned above, however, surely prove the excellence of architecture technology of Baekje.

Rapid seismic vulnerability assessment by new regression-based demand and collapse models for steel moment frames

  • Predictive demand and collapse fragility functions are two essential components of the probabilistic seismic demand analysis that are commonly developed based on statistics with enormous, costly and time consuming data gathering. Although this approach might be justified for research purposes, it is not appealing for practical applications because of its computational cost. Thus, in this paper, Bayesian regression-based demand and collapse models are proposed to eliminate the need of time-consuming analyses. The demand model developed in the form of linear equation predicts overall maximum inter-story drift of the lowto mid-rise regular steel moment resisting frames (SMRFs), while the collapse model mathematically expressed by lognormal cumulative distribution function provides collapse occurrence probability for a given spectral acceleration at the fundamental period of the structure. Next, as an application, the proposed demand and collapse functions are implemented in a seismic fragility analysis to develop fragility and consequently seismic demand curves of three example buildings. The accuracy provided by utilization of the proposed models, with considering computation reduction, are compared with those directly obtained from Incremental Dynamic analysis, which is a computer-intensive procedure.

  • Kang and Ko introduced a skew-symmetrizable matrix to describe a structure theorem for complete intersections of grade 4. Let $R=k[w_0,\;w_1,\;w_2,\;{\ldots},\;w_m]$ be the polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field k with indetermiantes $w_l$ and deg $w_l=1$, and $I_i$ a homogeneous perfect ideal of grade 3 with type $t_i$ defined by a skew-symmetrizable matrix $G_i(1{\leq}t_i{\leq}4)$. We show that for m = 2 the Hilbert function of the zero dimensional standard k-algebra $R/I_i$ is determined by CI-sequences and a Gorenstein sequence. As an application of this result we show that for i = 1, 2, 3 and for m = 3 a Gorenstein sequence $h(R/H_i)=(1,\;4,\;h_2,\;{\ldots},\;h_s)$ is unimodal, where $H_i$ is the sum of homogeneous perfect ideals $I_i$ and $J_i$ which are geometrically linked by a homogeneous regular sequence z in $I_i{\cap}J_i$.

Before Umayyad dynasty is established a country since islam occurrence, islamic influence was not extended much and stayed in Mecca area. Of course, when is Patriarchal Caliphate period, although there was part territorial expansion, was in existing islam influence still. Regular territorial expansion to Umayyad dynasty several influences and religious conflict happen. Change about islamic architecture occurred much fatally. Therefore, can find islamic archetype about islamic architecture until Prophet Muhammad period and Patriarchal Caliphate period. Also, Muhammad that is Islamic originator participated to mosque architecture directly in life. Can understand philosophy about islamic architecture that Muhammad seeks in mosque architecture. Was age that seek Muhammad's philosophy department religious succession strongly to Patriarchal Caliphate period. Therefore, can understand role of religion, mosque architecture's meaning and role that seek in Islam. It was just before that early mosque architecture receives effect of conquest area or the surrounding country. Therefore, characteristic of mosque received much effect of Prophet Muhammad and qur'an. Do construction according to qur'an's notice based on Prophet's house's function to early mosque. qur'an is no direct delineation as form or architecture element. qur'an refers thing about spiritual aspect or function about special quality of mosque, role etc..
