A Study on the Food Habits and Dietary Intakes of University Students in Busan Area (부산지역 대학생들의 식습관 및 식이섭취 실태에 대한 조사연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the food habits and dietary intakes of University students in Busan areas. The survey was carried out by self-questionnaires with 130 male and 156 female students. The results obtained were as fellows. 1. 95.3% of male and 76.4% of female students answered they are moderate or healthy. The rates of alcohol drinking in male and female students were 94.5% and 81.0% and the rates of smoking were 73.2% and 2.0% respectively 34.6% of male and 56.9% of female students didn't regular exercise. 2. 21.3% of male and 10.5% of female students were satisfied with their current body image and 74.3% of female students wanted thinner figure. Male students attempted to weight control by exercise and females did by exercise and fasting. 3. The average BMI of students were 22.60 in males and 19.53 in females respectively and 78.0%, of female students were underweight. 4. Breakfast was skipped in 79.5%, of male and 83.7% of female students and it appeared male students eat faster than female students. 5 Male students preferred beverage and noodles and females preferred bread, biscuit, snack and beverage as snack food and female students had a higher tendency to enjoy snack time. The frequency of eating out was higher in female students and the standard of food choice was preference > price > convenience > nutritional value. The favorite dishes were meats > poultry > fruits > fishes, cereals, noodles in male and fruits > meats > cereals > poultry > noodles > fishes in female students. 6. The average energy intake were 1715.70kca1 in male and 1588.71kcal in female students respectively and the intakes of Ca, vitamin A and B2 were lower than RDA in male and female students.

The Effects of Smoking, Drinking and Exercise on Autioxidant Vitamin Intakes and Plasma Antioxidant Status in Elderly People Living in Ulsan (울산지역 노인의 생활습관에 따른 항산화 영양소 섭취실태 및 혈액내 항산화 영양 상태 비교)

  • Body antioxidant status is an important factor in the prevention of many chronic diseases caused by oxidative stress, especially in the elderly and is affected by health-related habits, such as smoking, drinking and regular physical activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between these health-related habits and plasma antioxidant status in the elderly. Plasma antioxidant status was examined by determining plasma levels of antioxidant vitamins (vitamin C, A, E, $\beta$ -carotene), total antioxidant status (TAS) and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) . The subjects included 225 elderly persons aged over 60 yews (63 males, 162 females) living in the Ulsan area. They were interviewed to collect data on their general characteristics and health behaviors such as smoking, exercise and alcohol consumption by means of questionnaires. Their dietary intakes were obtained by means of semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) The study population was divided into two or three groups according to their smoking, drinking, and exercise status. The ratio of smoker, drinker and exerciser was 16.7%, 31.0% and 44.2% respectively. The dietary antioxidant vitamin intakes were not significantly different among groups of smoking and drinking status, but tended to be higher in non-smokers and non-drinkers than in smokers and drinkers. Plasma vitamin C and $\beta$ -carotene levels were significantly higher in non-smokers, but Plasma vitamin A and TBARS levels were significantly lower in non-smokers than in smokers. Plasma TAS was not significantly different among the smoking groups, but showed a tendency to decrease with an increase in the number of packyear. Plasma vitamin C and $\beta$ -carotene levels of the non-drinkers were higher than those of drinkers and past-drinkers, but plasma vitamin A, C, E, TAS and TBARS showed no difference among the groups of drinker. All vitamin intakes of the exercisers were slightly higher than those of the non-exercisers, but vitamin C intake was significantly higher in female exercisers than in non-exercisers. Plasma $\beta$ -carotene levels were significantly higher in male exercisers and plasma vitamin A, C, E, TAS and TBARS levels tended to be higher in exercisers than in non-exercisers. These results suggested that change to non-smoker, modulation of alcohol consumption and regular exercise could enhance antioxidant defences against reactive oxygen species and might increase the likelihood of a healthier life span.

A Study on the Effects of Turmeric Intake after Weight Training on Blood Alcohol Concentration

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of turmeric intake and weight training on blood alcohol concentration, liver enzyme levels of and their effects on health promotion in adult males. There was no significant difference of taking turmeric powder combined with weight training exercise on blood alcohol levels in adult men who consumed alcohol on a regular basis. There was also no change on the change of body composition. The results were collected from elite athletes that had spent more than 10 years in their respective sports so it is difficult to observe any significant results from 8 weeks, short-term exercises of 1RM 70~80%, 3 times per week. In the next study, it is necessary to divide the subjects into more diverse groups and subject them by varying amounts of turmeric intake, exercise, etc., in order to fully study and understand the effects on blood alcohol level, change, and health promotion. Consequently, this study demonstrated there were no significant differences in the effects of continuous drinking habits of adult men's turmeric powder intake and weight training exercise on changes in GOT, GPT, γ-GTP, and blood alcohol concentrations. Moreover, health improvements themselves didn't affect changes in body composition.

Analysis of Weight Maintenance Behavior among Female University Students (여대생 체중유지자들의 일상 생활 습관 분석)

  • Since the 1980's, despite the conclusion of a number of studies in Western countries focusing upon weight maintenance there has been no similar research in Korea which takes into account the contrasts of culture and eating habits between east and west. In order to identify eating, snacking and exercise behaviors, 24 female university students who have maintained weight for at least a year were enrolled fur an 11 day study. Participants were required to sign into the program and complete the questionnaire, answering questions by concerning what they ate and did everyday. After excluding unanswered questions, data over 11 days were exported into the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, then both ANOVA and Kendall's tau correlation were applied with SPSS. 75% of weight maintainers had normal BMI (18-23.5) in relation to Korean standard, and appeared to eat a main meal smaller than moderate in portion size. Only two days showed that amount of breakfast eaten negatively correlated with lunch (p < 0.05), while no correlations between amounts of lunch and dinner eaten over all study period. Compared with breakfast or lunch, dinner was usually larger in portion size, but some variables such as TV viewing, restaurant meals, number of people at dinner table seemed not correlated with amount of dinner eaten. In addition, the weight-maintainers reported they rarely consumed snacks or sweetened beverages. Unlike their western counterparts, ffw participants reported that they took part in regular exercise during the day, which may lead us to the conclusion that these young female weight maintainers seem to maintain their weight with eating behaviours such as 'eat small portion', 'avoid snacking' and 'avoid soft drinks' rather than doing regular exercise. The study did not include a control group, and was foreshortened due to technical difficulties so it may be necessary to repeat the study while considering these two points.

Effects of change in Obestiy and Life Style Factors on Blood Pressure and Serum Cholesterol - 3-year Follow-up among Workers in a Steel Manufacturing Industry - (체중 및 건강행태변화가 혈압 및 콜레스테롤에 미치는 영향 - 철강제조업체 근로자를 대상으로 한 3년 추구연구 -)

  • Objectives: We investigated the effects of changes in obesity and life style factors, such as cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and exercise, on the changes in blood pressure and serum cholesterol among Korean men. Methods: This study included 7,205 healthy male employees in the steel manufacturing industry. Each subject underwent health examination in 1994 and was re-examined in 1997. The study subjects were classified into four categories, according to changes in body mass index (BMI) (loss; stable; mild gain: severe gain), cigarette smoking (quitter; nor-smoker; smoker continued; smoker started), alcohol drinking (quitter; non-drinker; drinker continued; drinker started) and exercise (more exercise; continuous regular exercise; continuous irregular or no exercise; less exercise), respectively. We evaluated the relationship between the categories of change in those independent variables and the changes in blood pressure and serum cholesterol, adjusted for BMI in 1994 and age by analysis of variance. Results: The change in systolic blood pressure was positively associated with the changes in BMI (p<0.001) and drinking (p=0,001), but negatively with smoking (p=0,004), compared to the first category of each independent variables. The systolic blood pressure was significantly less increased in the continuous smoking group than quitter or hon-smoker. The changes in diastolic blood pressure and serum cholesterol appeared to have statistically significant linear relationships only with the change in BMI. The change in exercise showed a marginal significance with diastolic blood pressure (p=0.088). Conclusions: These prospective data emphasize the importance of obesity as a determinant of the changes in blood pressure and serum cholesterol. In addition, the changes in smoking and drinking habits can affect systolic blood pressure.

Risk Factors for Hypertension of Middle Aged Male Workers using Data from Health Check-ups (중년 남성 근로자의 고혈압 발생에 관련된 요인의 검토)

  • The present study was conducted to identify the factors related to the hypertension, and to offer the evidence of 1st prevention of hypertension. 2,230 male workers aged 30-59 years were observed the relationships between hypertension and age, BMI, glucose intolerance, smoking, alcohol drinking, regular exercise, eating habits using data from health check-ups in 2011. As a results, the incidence rate of hypertension was 18.8% of 30-39 year old group, 23.8% of 40-49 year old group, 33.0% of 40-49 year old group. The incidence rate of hypertension was significantly higher as age and BMI ascend, and it was higher in the group of abnormal glucose intolerance, regular alcohol intake, no regular exercise than their respective counterparts. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio of hypertension increased significantly as there is an increase in age, and the group of abnormal glucose intolerance, smoking, regular alcohol intake, no regular exercise. In conclusion, obesity, glucose intolerance, alcohol intake, and physical inactivity are risk factors for hypertension, therefore we need the control of these factors for 1st prevention of hypertension.

Nutrition Intake according to Food and Exercise Habits in Female College Students of Yang-Ju si (경기도 양주시 여대생의 식습관, 운동습관, 건강관련행동이 영양섭취수준에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was intended to investigate food, exercise habits, perception of health status and the effects of nutrient intake of female college students. Food habits such as regularity of meal time, repast of breakfast, numbers of night snack per week and duration of meal were assessed via a self reporting questionnaire, and 24hrs recall method for nutrient intake was obtained from 155 female college students in Yangju-si. The mean height and weight of the subjects were $161.25{\pm}3.52cm$ and $52.26{\pm}4.52kg$, respectively. The average intakes of energy and nutrients were below the Korea recommended dietary allowance(RDA). Especially, The nutrient intakes(energy, protein, fat, fiber, calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, sodium, potassium, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin C, folate, vitamin E, cholesterol) of the group in which the regularity of meal time per week was 5~7 days was significantly higher than the group in which the regularity of meal time was < 3 days (p<0.005). The nutrient intakes influenced by the food habit such as the regularity of meal time, skipping breakfast, and the numbers of night snack per week but did not differ in accordance with the regular exercise habits and perception of health status. These findings suggest that nutritional education based on female college students' food habits(regularity of meal time, skipping breakfast and night snacks per week, and duration of meal) may be required to improve dietary variety. It is considered that the improvement in dietary habits will contribute to the improvement of nutrition.

The Influences of Immune Function and Respiratory System on Aerobic Exercise by Exposed Acute Hypobaric Hypoxic Environment. (급성 저압.저산소 노출에서의 유산소성 운동이 면역기능 및 호흡기계에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of immune function and respiratory system on aerobic exercise of 75 %HRmax intensity in an exposed acute hypobaric hypoxic environment. The subjects were 20 male college students, 10 of which were soccer players (19.6${\pm}$0.8 yr, BMI 22.3${\pm}$1.0, V02max 56.5${\pm}$4.8 mljkgjmin) and 10 general students (22.2${\pm}$2.3 yr, BMI 22.7${\pm}$2.1, $VO_{2max}$ 50.5${\pm}$6.6 ml/kg/min). Items of measurement after exercise on level and high altitude were $O_{2}$, $CO_{2}$, ventilation (VE), respiratory frequency, respiratory quotient, RBC, MCV, MCH, MCHC, Hb, Hct, reticulocyte, WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, basophil, and immunoglobulin (IgA, IgD, IgG, IgM). As the result of the verifying hypothesis, these results may suggest three new findings: first, to produce hypoxic ventilatory depression not only at level land but also at 3,000 m high altitude during 30 minute aerobics exercise of 75 %HRmax intensity, second to be more excellent for soccer players in adaptation and sensibility on response of respiratory system at high altitude, and third, to change each other by regular exercise habits or altitude in the monocyte.

A Study on the Relations between Yangseng Level and Stress in Industrial Workers (근로자(勤勞者)의 양생수준(養生水準)과 스트레스와의 관계(關係))

  • This study aims at grasping the relativity between laborers' yangseng level and stress so as to present the groundwork for preventive oriental medicine approach in industrial health. The researcher prepared the questionnaire on general character, health-related yangseng level and chose 632 people to execute Autonomic balance test through heartbeat change. The collected material was analyzed by SPSS and tested by T-test, ANOVA. The general yangseng level average is 3.27, morality yangseng 3.91, sleep yangseng 3.39, mind yangseng 3.32, sex life yangseng 3.29, exercise yangseng 3.14, activities and rest yangseng 3.07, diet yangseng 2.95, seasonal yangseng 2.84. The highest is morality yangseng and seasonal yangseng is the lowest. In the aspect of yangseng level : Having a spouse, Non-smoking, Non-drinking, Regular exercising, Sufficient sleeping have higher yanseng levels. In Autonomic balance test, age from 35 to 40 has the highest autonomic activity and job period from 5 years to 10 years has the highest stress resistance. Non-smokers have high autonomic activity and stress resistance. Further, have low autonomic balance, stress index and fatigue strength. In the case of regular exercising person, he/she has high autonomic activity and stress resistance with low stress index. Regarding sleeping time, autonomic balance is the highest when he/she sleeps less than 6 hours. Stress resistance is the highest when he/she sleeps 7 hours and stress index is the highest when he/she sleeps 6 hours. After comparing the relativity between yangseng level autonomic balance test, only exercise yangseng has plus factor on autonomic activity and stress resistance and minus factor on stress ind ex and fatigue strength. Yangseng level has been affected by individual character and daily habits. Also stress is more influenced by daily habits than by individual character. We can find the relativity of exercise yangseng between yangseng and stress which suggests that we need to take measures to win over stress in individual health in the near future.
