An experimental study was conducted to develop a thin-layer rewetting equation of short grain rough rice of Akihikari variety. Four thin-layer rewetting equations were experimentally determined from $25^{\circ}C$ to $45^{\circ}C$ and 70%RH to 85%RH conditions. Diffusion, Henderson, Page, and Thompson equations widely used as thin-layer drying equations were selected. Experimental data were fitted to these equations using linear regression analysis except diffusion equation. The diffusivity in the diffusion equation was determined by optimization method. Four equations were highly significant. In order to compare the goodness of fit of each equation, the error mean square of each equawas calculated. The diffusion model was not a very good model because the error mean square was very large. The other three models showed the same level or error mean square and could predict satisfactorily the rewetting rate or short grain rough rice.
Previously developed empirical equations used to calculate the parameters of the transient storage model are analyzed in depth in order to evaluate their behavior in representing solute transport in the natural streams with storage zone. A comparative analysis of the existing theoretical and experimental equations used to predict parameters of the transient storage (TS) model is reported. New simplified equations for predicting 4 key parameters of the TS model using hydraulic data sets that are easily obtained in the natural streams are also developed. The weighted one-step Huber method, which is one of the nonlinear multi-regression methods, is applied to derive new parameters equation. These equations are proven to be superior in explaining mixing characteristics of natural streams with the transient storage zone more precisely than the other existing equations.

This study presents a new analysis of blast vibration equations of a bridge structures using a reliability index. Changing the reliability makes each blast vibration equation. The blast equations are divided into three classes, having 50%, 90% and 99.9% at ${\beta}$=0, 1.28 and 3 respectively. In the result of this research, the assumption equations which used ${\beta}$=1.28 is suitable. By using these blast equations, it is possible for users to predict reliable ground vibration values upon demand.
Objective: The objectives were to develop prediction equations for digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) of feed ingredients and diets for pigs based on chemical composition and to evaluate the accuracy of the equations using in vivo data. Methods: A total of 734 data points from 81 experiments were employed to develop prediction equations for DE and ME in feed ingredients and diets. The CORR procedure of SAS was used to determine correlation coefficients between chemical components and energy concentrations and the REG procedure was used to generate prediction equations. Developed equations were tested for the accuracy according to the regression analysis using in vivo data. Results: The DE and ME in feed ingredients and diets were most negatively correlated with acid detergent fiber or neutral detergent fiber (NDF; r = -0.46 to r = -0.67; p<0.05). Three prediction equations for feed ingredients reflected in vivo data well as follows: DE = 728+0.76×gross energy (GE)-25.18×NDF (R2 = 0.64); ME = 965+0.66×GE-24.62×NDF (R2 = 0.60); ME = 1,133+0.65×GE-29.05×ash-23.17×NDF (R2 = 0.67). Conclusion: In conclusion, the equations suggested in the current study would predict energy concentration in feed ingredients and diets.
The purposes of this investigation were to determine the validity of various methods (available anthropometric equations and near-infrared light interactance) for estimating body fat and to develop multiple regression equations for the prediction of body fat. Thirty-eight healthy males(age: 20.87$\pm$7.17 yrs) and 12 females(19.58$\pm$2.19 yrs) underwent hydrostatic weighing to determine body fat. Anthropometric measurements were taken of height, weight, nin skinfolds and thirteen circumferences. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) Relative body fat determined by underwater weighing was 12.08$\pm$5.21% for the males and 17.97$\pm$5.75% for the females. 2) Circumference and skin fold that had the highest correlation with the body fat were waist girth in males and females(r=0.60, r=0.96, respectively), and subscapular in males(r=0.68) and triceps in females(r=0.96). 3) Corss-validation of 18 selected equations on males revealed total errors ranging from 3.76% to 5.06%. Among these equations, M3(Pollock et al.) demonstrated the least total error. Total error of estimation by near-infrared(NIR) was less than that of available anthropometric measurement equations. The results of the cross-validation of 12 equations on females revealed that F3(Sloan et al.) was clearly superior in accuracy of prediction. 4) Correlational analyses showed that estimation of body fat by NIR measurement seemed to be more closely associated with body fat determined by underwater weighing in women than men, in older subjects than younger ones, and in fatter subjects than leaner ones.
Thin layer drying tests of short gain rough rice were conducted in an experimental dryer equiped with air conditioning unit. The drying tests were performed in triplicate at three air temperatures of $35^circ$, $45^circ$, $55^circ$, and three relative humidities of 40%, 55%, 70%, respectively. Previously published thin layer equations were reviewed and four different models widely used as thin layer drying equations for cereal grains were selected. The selected four models were Pages, simplified diffusion, Lewis's and Thompson's models. Experimental data were fitted to these equations using stepwise multiple regression analysis. The experimental constants involved in tow equations were represented as a function of temperature and relative humidity of drying air. The results of comparing coefficients of determination and root mean square errors of miosture ratio for low equations showed that Page's and Thompsons models were found to fit adequately to all drying test data with coefficient of determination of 0.99 or better and root mean square error of moisture ratio of 0.025.
The objective of this study is to propose curve fitted equations that can facilitate calculations and improve a practical applicability when the seismic performance of buried pipelines needs to be evaluated. The curve fitted equations are derived based on the evaluation of the dynamic responses of concrete pipe with a boundary condition of fixed-free ends. To study the dynamic response of underground pipe, the numerical analysis program developed in the previous research has been used. The location of maximum strain has been determined through dynamic analyses for a boundary condition of fixed-free ends. Then $wavelength{\lambda}$ of 5-1000(m) and propagation velocity(Vs) of 100-2000(m/s) have been applied at the location of maximum strain and the unit srain curve with the changes of the $wavelength{\lambda}$ and propagation velocity(Vs) has been obtaind. Non-linear least-square regression has been used to develop highly applicable curve fitted equations and various types of exponential regression equations have been checked out. Thus curve fitted equations and necessary coefficients with best results are suggested.
Body water compartments in vivo were determined in Holstein cattle with age ranging from 5 to 521 days to obtain an equation to estimate volumes of body water. Live weight ranged from 47 to 480 kg. Compartments were determined as antipyrine space for total body water (TBW), thiocyanate space for extracellular water (ECW) and Evans blue dye space for plasma water (PW). Body water compartments expressed as a percentage of live weight decreased as age in days increased and significantly correlated with age in days. Regression analyses revealed that prediction equations had low accuracy. Regression equations of body water compartments on live weight (WT, kg) were useful for the prediction of body fluid with a high accuracy. Live weight significantly regressed on age in days (Day), which was inferred to be utilized for estimation of standardized live weight in case animals were emaciated by certain causes such as severe diarrhea or dehydration. In conclusion, following equations were presented to estimate body water compartments of cattle in vivo : TBW in liters = $0.556({\pm}0.007)WT+10$, r = 0.993, $SE{\pm}0.7$ ECW in liters = $0.321({\pm}0.008)WT+10$, r = 0.978, $SE{\pm}0.8$ PW in liters = $0.0502({\pm}0.0012)WT+1.6$, r = 0.0983, $SE{\pm}0.1$ WT (kg) = $0.772({\pm}0.018)Day+24$, r = 0.982, $SE{\pm}2.3$.
In many companies handling flammable liquids, explosion-proof electrical equipment have been installed according to the Korean Industrial Standards (KS C IEC 60079-10-1). In these standards, hazardous area for explosive gas atmospheres has to be classified by the evaluation of the evaporation rate of flammable liquid leakage. The evaporation rate is an important factor to determine the zones classification and hazardous area distance. However, there is no systematic method or rule for the estimation of evaporation rate in these standards and the first principle equations of a evaporation rate are very difficult. Thus, it is really hard for industrial workplaces to employ these equations. Thus, this problem can trigger inaccurate results for evaluating evaporation range. In this study, empirical models for estimating an evaporation rate of flammable liquid have been developed to tackle this problem. Throughout the sensitivity analysis of the first principle equations, it can be found that main factors for the evaporation rate are wind speed and temperature and empirical models have to be nonlinear. Polynomial regression is employed to build empirical models. Methanol, benzene, para-xylene and toluene are selected as case studies to verify the accuracy of empirical models.
A computer-assisted desktop is developed for layout design of a concrete gravity dam on the basis of safety and economy. Using a set of regression equations, a dam layout is proposed. With reference to the regression equations and relevant input data, overall dam dimensions are determined by satisfying the stability criteria jointly under usual, unusual, and extreme loading conditions with the desired hydraulic conformity. Among several feasible alternatives, the program enables a designer to select the optimum layout, which corresponds to the minimum total cost of the structure. The method is applied to a case study to examine dimensions of proposed alternatives and to compare them with those of an existing dam.
