  • This study aims to develop an ecoregion classification using a multi-hierarchy of environmental factors for spatial patterns in the capacities and potentials of ecological systems in mountain regions. To achieve the objectives, we describe the spatial distribution of environmental factors and identify the multi-hierarchy of these factors using spatial statistics. Lastly, we assess ecosystem-units using both a forest type map (yung & kung) and a forest soil map in order to present a ecoregion classification. This study was performed at a $1,168km^2$ area in Gangwon-do, Korea. Sedimentary rocks, particularly limestone (36.6%) exist in high proportions in the research area. While higher mountains are present in the north and central Korean peninsula, plain areas show large proportions along Odae and Pyeongchang river. In a multi-hierarchy, geology and elevation are identified as upper levels and landform classification (surface curvature, upslope area) is considered as a lower level. 'Geology+elevation+landform' shows equally higher ${\chi}^2$ values than that of other classifications and we map ecoregions based on this result. Uniqueness of environmental characteristics in the research area such as high proportions of sedimentary rocks and higher elevations influences our ecoregion classification. We are looking forward to considering this study as an effective approach to integrating various ecological themes for mountain ecosystem management.

  • These studies were conducted to obtain basic information of the rice blast resistance in comparision with blast occurrence patterns in the blast nursery test in Korea. One hupdred and twenty nine rice varieties including several blast differential varieties and 30 combinations of pedigree lines were tested at six different locations, Suweon, Chulweon, Chuncheon, Iri, Jinan, Imsil, and Milyang, in 1976~1977. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. When blast resistance was tested using three sets of differential varieties at six locations, prevalent races were different depending on the location and differential variety set tested. 2. There were regional differences in blast disease reation among Japonica rice varieties and among Indica${\times}$Japonica crosses. 3. At Suweon blast disease reactions of pedigree lines were different from that at Imsil. 4. Three varietal groups were made depending on the develpment of rice blast in the nursery test. 5. In general, highly resistant varieties to rice leaf blast were also resistant to neck blast, but there were exceptions.

  • This study proposes an integrated accessibility measurement algorithm, which is applied to the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system consisting of bus and subway networks, and analyzes the result. We construct a public transportation network graph linking bus-subway networks and take the time distance as the link weight in the graph. We develop a time-distance algorithm to measure the time distance between each pair of transit stations based on the T-card transaction database. The average travel time between nodes has been computed via the shortest-path algorithm applied to the time-distance matrix, which is obtained from the average speed of each transit route in the T-card transaction database. Here the walking time between nodes is also taken into account if walking is involved. The integrated time-distance accessibility of each node in the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system has been computed from the T-card data of 2013. We make a comparison between the results and those of the bus system and of the subway system, and analyze the spatial patterns. This study is the first attempt to measure the integrated time-distance accessibility for the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system consisting of 16,277 nodes with 600 bus routes and 16 subway lines.

  • Urban sprawl has been criticized due to its negative effects, including the encroachment of farmland and open spaces, the increase in traffic congestion and air pollution, the decline of central city, the decrease in social capital, and the unfairness of tax burdens on infrastructure and public services. This study measures urban sprawl in the capital region of South Korea where the characteristics of urban sprawl have been known to be different from those identified in the U.S. metropolitan areas. In particular, the study examines whether the capital region has experienced the decline of the central city with an expansion of low density residential development in suburban areas. Three measurements, the sprawl index with population density, the ratio of changes in urbanized areas to changes in population, and the population density gradient, were employed to measure urban sprawl, and GIS mapping and descriptive analysis were used to examine the central city decline and the characteristics of development patterns in suburban areas. The results show that the capital region of South Korea is moving to the American style sprawled development with the decline of the central city and an increase of single detached homes in suburban areas, implying that policy makers need to develop growth management strategies to prevent urban sprawl and its negative effects that many U.S. metropolitan areas have suffered from.

  • The results of this research and analysis are as follows: First, it was possible to subdivide the increasing and decreasing trends of regional student numbers in Seoul into a total of 57 types by discovering additional 22 types through the Seoul City survey analysis of the 35 existing types, and it was found that there were 14 types that had not appeared in Seoul contrary to the nationwide appearance. Second, among the 43 types in Seoul, the most long-term decline types accounted for 71.3% in the order of A6 type> A8 type> A17 type> A2 type> A1 type> A18 type. The most long-term type of a new school was Nl4 type. Third, among the long-term decline types, there were many types that prevented the decrease in the number of students, such as the type A2, type A3, type A13, and type A15, in Gangnam School District 8, whereas in the non-Gangnam area, there were many other types of student decrease. The difference in distributions of types among regions was clearly seen. Therefore, in Seoul, which is mostly an urban area, it is necessary to carefully investigate and analyze the regional characteristics of each of the 11 Education Support Offices and to establish a school accommodation policy that reflects these results.

  • The complex vegetation and plant species distributions within riparian corridors influence plant species diversity patterns at both local and regional scales and further reflect both natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Because of these characteristics, riparian zones are often the ecosystem level component that are most sensitive to changes of the surrounding environment; they provide early indications of environmental change and can be viewed as the important source in the watershed. The objectives of this study were two concepts: first, document the composition and dominance of plant communities of riparian areas in the stream, second, compare species composition and temporal diversity between stations in riparian areas of the Ian Stream. The flora was composed to total 158 kinds of the vascular plants as 49 family, 54 genera, 145 species, 12 varieties, 1 forma When the naturalized plant were applied to the recent classification system 280 kinds, the naturalization rate was $10.8\% higher than that of mean value($10.3\%$) of the Korean mountain district. Furthermore, urbanization index (UI) was $6.1\%$. The dominant vegetation communities were distributed in the habitats of three compartments from upstream to downstream. The vegetations were included Phragmites japonica, Salix gracilistyla, S. hulteni and Robinia pseudo-acacia in the riparian area, and Persicaria sieboldii, Stellaria alsine var. undulata, Draba nemorosa var. hebecarpa, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Lepidium apetalum, Bidens frondosa, Trigonotis peduncularis and Hemistepta lyrata in the sandbank or the riparian area, and Equisetum arvense, Humulus japonicus, Persicaria perfoliata, Trifolium repens, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Lactuca indica var. laciniata, Avena fatua, Agropyron yesoense, Oenothera odorata, Viola mandshurica, Rumex crispus in banksides, respectively.

  • Projected changes and their impacts on water quality are simulated in response to climate change stressors. CGHR (T63) simulation on the A1B scenario is converted to regional scale data using a statistical down-scaling method and applied to SWAT model to assess water quality impacts in Nakdong River basin. The results demonstrate that rainfall-runoff and pollutant loading in the future (2011~2100) will clearly increase as compared to the last 30-year average. The rate of pollutant loading increase is expected to continue its acceleration until 2040s. Runoff also shows similar patterns to the precipitation, increasing by 60%. Accordingly, the runoff increase results in escalation of pollutant loading by 35~45% for TSS and 5~20% for T-P. This phenomenon is more pronounced in the upper basin during winter and spring season.

  • This study was carried out to assess the distributional probability for Evergreen Broad-Leaved Forests(EBLFs) using the field data and digital climate data that were occurred during the period of 1980 to 2010. For the validation of logistic regression model, the probabilistic value ranged from 33 to 84%, especially the probabilistic value of growing distribution becomes lower patterns with higher altitude. In addition, it has been estimated that the probabilistic value of growing distribution is the highest with 63~83% among the regional units in temperate/warm-temperate forests.

  • Recently, several studies pointed out that there are distinct two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o events based on the spatial pattern of SST. Since the two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o have different impacts on global climate, it is quite important to identify the type to assess and predict the regional climate variability. So far, however, there are still many different definitions to identify the two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o from the different studies. In this study, we investigated a sensitivity of the impacts on climate variability over the Korean Peninsula corresponding to the definition of two-types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o. After checking pre-existing definitions and other possible definition, it is suggested here that two different definitions exhibit relatively strong relationship between El Ni$\tilde{n}$o events and the Korean climate variables when two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o are separated. In addition to the Korean climate, the two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o show quite distinct global teleconnection patterns when the definitions are used.
