  • In order to optimize the gold leaching process from refractory sulfide concentrate, a chlorine-hypochlorite solution with varying concentrations and temperatures were applied to salt-roasted concentrate. The concentrate consisted of pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena, which were turned into hematite through air-roasting at $750^{\circ}C$. Also these concentrates were changed into hematite and nantokite (CuCl)) through salt (NaCl)-roasting at $750^{\circ}C$. The results of the gold leaching experiments showed that the best gold leaching parameters were obtained when the hydrochloric acid-sodium hypochlorite mix was at a ratio of 1 : 2, the added concentration was 1.0 M concentration, the pulp density was 1.0%, and the leaching was done at a $60^{\circ}C$ leaching temperature. The leaching rate for gold was much greater in the roasted concentrate than in the raw concentrate. The leaching rate was greater in the salt-roasted concentrate than in the plain roasted concentrate too. From XRD analysis, quartz was found in the salt-roasted concentrate and in the solid residue from the chlorine-hypochlorite leaching solution at $60^{\circ}C$.

  • Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a typical inorganic material that has an excellent photocatalytic property and a high refractive index. It is used in water/air purifiers, solar cells, white pigments, refractory materials, semiconductors, etc.; its demand is continuously increasing. In this study, anatase and rutile phase titanium dioxide is prepared using hydroxyl and carboxyl; the titanium complex and its mechanism are investigated. As a result of analyzing the phase transition characteristics by a heat treatment temperature using a titanium complex having a hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group, it is confirmed that the material properties were different from each other and that the anatase and rutile phase contents can be controlled. The titanium complexes prepared in this study show different characteristics from the titania-formation temperatures of the known anatase and rutile phases. It is inferred that this is due to the change of electrostatic adsorption behavior due to the complexing function of the oxygen sharing point, which crystals of the TiO6 structure share.

  • The traditional method of 3+3 standard design and model-based Bayesian continual reassessment method (CRM) are commonly used in Phase I clinical trials to identify the maximal tolerated dose(MTD) of a new drug. In this paper we review clinical examples of Phase I trials that were carried out in patients with refractory or relapsed leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. The recently proposed 3+1+1 design and rolling-6 design can shorten the trial duration, when a very slow accrual of patients with a simple 3+3 standard design may result in the untimely termination of trials. Too conservative approaches in determining the dose levels in Phase I clinical trials can leave clinical investigators unable to accurately determine the MTD. When determining future patient doses, the designs that use a time-to-event CRM can cooperate late toxicities by accounting for the proportion of the observation period of each enrolled patient. With the CRM design, simulations under different scenarios during the trial are important in detecting the under- or over-estimation of the initial estimate of the dose-limiting toxicity rate for each dose level. We present the advantages and drawbacks of the designs used in Phase I clinical trials for leukemia patients.

  • Acute complicated type B aortic dissection (TBAD) is a potentially catastrophic, life-threatening condition. If left untreated, there is a high risk of aortic rupture, irreversible organ or limb damage, or death. Several risk factors have been associated with acute complicated TBAD, including age and refractory hypertension. In the acute phase, even uncomplicated patients are more prone to develop complications if hypertension and pain are left medically untreated. Innovations in stent graft technologies have incrementally improved outcomes since their first use for this condition in 1999, though improvement is needed in mitigating periprocedural complications, adverse events, and mortality. In the past decade, endovascular repair has become the preferred treatment because of its superior outcomes to open repair and medical therapy. The Valiant Captivia Thoracic Stent Graft System is a third-generation endovascular stent graft with advancements in minimally invasive delivery, conformability to the anatomy, and the minimization of adverse sequelae. Herein, this stent graft is briefly reviewed and its 3-year outcomes are presented. Freedom from all-cause and dissection-related mortality was 79.1% and 90.0%, respectiv ely. The Valiant Captiv ia Stent Graft represents a safe, effective intervention for acute complicated TBAD. Continued surveillance is needed to verify its longer-term durability.

  • So for the quartz-glassy crucible wastes which was used for pulling up silicon-single-crystal ingot have simply reused for refractory raw-materials, or exhausted. This study is concerned on the advanced recycling-technology that is obtained by the proper micro-particle preparation process in order to fabricate fine amorphous silica filler for EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound). Therefore, this paper will deal with the physical, chemical and thermal pre-treatment process for efficient impurity removal and with the proper micro-particle process for producing the amorphous silicafiller. In view of the results, if the chemical, physical and thermal pre-treatment process for efficient elimination of impurity was passed, the purity of wasted fused glassy crucible is almost equal to the its of first anhydrous quartz glass. Thus, it was understood that this wasted fused glassy crucible was sufficient value of recycling, though it was damaged. When the ingot was fabricated, Phase transformation of crystallization by heat treatment (heat hysteresis phenomenon) was not changed. So, it was understood that as fused silica in the amorphous state, as It is, recycling possibility was very high

  • A refractory grade low-cost silicon nitride powder was chemically analyzed, purified, and gas pressure sintered with the sintering additives. As-received powder contained a significant amount of free-Si, 0.72 wt% of Fe, 0.5 wt% of al and 0.31 wt% of Ca. Oxygen and carbon contents of the powder were 3.3 wt% and 0.4 wt%, respectively, and it consisted of 96% of $\beta$-phase and 4% of $\alpha$-phase. After lowering the Fe content and nitriding treatment, the powder was sintered with 6 wt% yttria and 2 wt% alumina for 1 h between 1823 K and 2123 K in order to examine the sintering behavior. Fully dense samples were obtained by sintering at 2123k for 2h. For comparison, a commercially available high-grade powder was also sintered at the same time. The low-cost powder showed much slower densification rate than the high-grade powder. Fully dense sample prepared from the low-cost powder contained a number of coarse grains with a low aspect ratio, and its hardness, fracture toughness, flexural strength and thermal shock resistance were not as good as those of the sample prepared with the high-grade powder.

The concentrations of total protein were significantly increased (p<0.01) on day 5 ($7.00{\pm}0.55$), 7($6.29{\pm}0.65$), and 9($6.34{\pm}0.61$), compared to those on day 0($5.50{\pm}0.12g/100m{\ell}$) in serum. The concentration of albumin on day 0 was $0.81{\pm}0.05$ and reached maximum on day 5 ($1.59{\pm}0.07g/100m{\ell}$) in serum. The concentrations of total protein were significantly increased(p<0.01) on day 5($1.56{\pm}0.10$), 7($1.99{\pm}0.22$), compared to those on day 0($0.38{\pm}0.02g/100m{\ell}$) in uterine fluid. The concentration of albumin on day 5($0.78{\pm}0.05g/100m{\ell}$) was higher than those on the other days in uterine fluid. 2. The incorporation rates of [$^3H$]-leucine into protein were significantly increased(p<0.01) on day 5 ($919.6{\pm}97.5$), 7($1445.4{\pm}95.9$) and 9($450.38{\pm}28.71$), compared to those on day 0($328.2{\pm}38.9cpm/mg$ protein) in endometrium. The incorporation rates in colehicine-treated endometrium on day 5 ($1341.9{\pm}73.8$), 7($1729.4{\pm}63.3cpm/mg$ protein) were significantly higher(p<0.01) than those on the other days. 3. The compositions of amino acid were not distinctly changed during early pregnancy in serum. The composition ratios of methione, lysine were distinctly decreased on day 3, compared to those on day 0 in uterine fluid. Those of glycine, alanine were increased on day 9, compared to those on other days but his tidine decreased in uterine fluid. 4. The concentrations of total phospholipid and total cholesterol were significantly decreased(p<0.01) on day 3($77.9{\pm}15.5$, $61.5{\pm}21.2$), compared to those on day 0($164.0{\pm}33.9$, $167.2{\pm}46.2mg/100m{\ell}$)in serum. The concentrations of total phospholipid and total cholesterol on day 9 ($47.3{\pm}13.4$, $37.7{\pm}9.6mg/100m{\ell}$) were significantly higher(p<0.01) than those on the other days in uterine fluid. 5. Total phopholipid/total cholesterol ratios were not significantly changed during early pregnancy in serum. However, total phospholipid/total cholesterol ratios on day 5 ($2.00{\pm}0.42$), 7 ($1.11{\pm}0.77$) and 9 ($1.47{\pm}0.30$) were higher than those on day 3($0.84{\pm}0.41$) in uterine fluid. 6. The concentrations of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylserine were significantly increased (p<0.01) on the other days, compared to those on day 0 during early pregnancy in serum. The concentrations of phosphatidylcholine were significantly increased(p<0.01),compared to those on day 0 and those of phosphatidyl-ethanolamine were consistently increased but not significant in early pregnancy in uterine fluid.

  • Purpose: To assess the toxicity and tumor response induced by $DCVac/IR^{(R)}$ dendritic cell(DC) immunotherapy combined with irradiation for refractory colorectal cancer patients with multiple liver metastases. Materials and Methods: Between May 2004 and November 2006, applicants from a pool of refractory colorectal cancer patients with multiple liver metastases were enrolled. The patients were registered after having signed the informed consent form, which had been approved by the Institutional Review Board from the Dong-A University and Busan National University Hospital. DCs were obtained from peripheral blood of each patient, and then cultured in vitro. A total of $6{\times}10^6$ DCs were packed into a vial($DCVac/IR^{(R)}$, 0.5 ml) at the convenience of each patient's schedule. On the day before and on the day of each vaccination, each patient received a 4 Gy radiation dose to the target tumor. On the day of vaccination, the indicated dose of autologous DCs was injected into the irradiated tumor using ultrasound-guided needle injection procedures. A total of four vaccinations were scheduled at three 2-week intervals and one 4 week interval at the Dong-A University and Busan National University Hospital. If the tumor status was deemed to be stable or responding to therapy, an additional vaccination dose or two was approved at 4 week intervals beyond the fourth immunization. A tolerance test for DCs was conducted by injecting a range of doses($3{\times}10^6\;to\;12{\times}10^6$ DCs) after the 3rd injection. Moreover, the maximal tolerable dose was applied to additional patients. Treatment safety was evaluated in all patients who had at least one injection. Treatment feasibility was evaluated by the 10th week by assessing the response of patients having at least 4 injections. For systemic toxicities, the evaluation was performed using the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria, whereas adverse effects were recorded using common WHO toxicity criteria. Results: Of the 24 registered patients, 22 received the DCs injections. Moreover, of the 14 patients that applied for the tolerance test, only 11 patients completed it because 3 patients withdrew their testing agreement. A grade 3 or more side effect, which was possibly related to the DC injection, did not occur in additional patients. The $12{\times}10^6$ DC injection was identified as the maximum tolerable dose, and was then injected in an additional 8 patients. Patients tolerated the injection fairly well, with no fatal side effects. In order to assess the feasibility of DC immunotherapy, the response was evaluated in other hepatic lesions outside of the targeted hepatic lesion. The response evaluation was performed in 15 of the 17 patients who received at least 4 injections. Stable and progressive disease was found in 4 and 11 patients, respectively. Conclusion: The DC-based immunotherapy and radiotherapy is theoretically synergistic for the local control and systemic control. The $DCVac/IR^{(R)}$ immunotherapy combined with irradiation was tolerable and safe in the evaluated cases of refractory colorectal cancer with multiple liver metastases. Future work should include well designed a phase II clinical trials.

  • In terms of resources recycling and resolving waste disposal problems, it is very important to recover precious metals like Au, Ag and Pd and valuable metals like Cu, Sn and Ni from the scraps of waste electrical and electronic equipment(WEEE) that consists of detective electrical and electronic parts discarded during manufacturing electrical and electronic equipments and waste electrical and electronic parts generated during disassembling them. In general, the scraps of WEEE are composed of various metals and alloys as well as refractory oxides and plastic components. Precious and valuable metals from the scraps of WEEE can be recovered by gas-phase-volatilization, hydrometallurgical, or pyrometallurgical processes. However, the gas-phase-volatilization and hydrometallurgical processes have been suggested but not yet commercialized. At the present time, most of the commercial plants for recovering precious and valuable metals from the scraps of WEEE adopt pyrometallurgical processes. Therefore, in this paper, the technical and environmental aspects on the important pyrometallurgical processes through literature survey are reviewed, and the scale-up result of a new pyrometallurgical process for recovering the precious and valuable metals contained in the scraps of WEEE using waste copper slag is presented.

  • In this study, rare earth elements (REE) leaching from a refractory REE ore containing goethite as a major gangue mineral was conducted, introducing a two-stage method of chemical decomposition-acid leaching. At the chemical decomposition step, using one of alkaline agent, NaOH, the ore was decomposed, changing NaOH concentration from 20 to 50 wt% at 10% (w/w) of pulp density and the maximum temperature achieved without boiling at each NaOH concentration. With increasing NaOH concentration, light REE (Ce, La and Nd) and iron were concentrated in the solid phase which is the decomposed product, while aluminum (Al) and phosphorus (P) were removed to the liquid phase, and their concentrations in the solid phase were down to 0.96 and 0.17%, respectively. In addition, through XRD analysis, it was found that the crystallinity of goethite was considerably decreased. At the acid leaching step, the product decomposed by 50 wt% NaOH was leached at 3.0 M HCl and 80 ℃ for 3 hr, then the REE leaching efficiency was above 94% (Ce 80%), and the leaching efficiencies of Al and P were decreased to 12 and 0%, respectively. Therefore, in terms of both REE leaching efficiency and impurity removal, those decomposition and leaching conditions were chosen as optimum processing methods of the investigated material. In terms of REE leaching mechanism, because REE and iron leaching efficiencies showed the positive correlation each other, so it can be concluded that decreasing crystallinity of goethite affect the improvement of REE leaching.
