The effects of atmospheric refraction of rays on the geometry of high-resolution images such as the KOMPSAT-EOC images are described. An atmospheric refraction mechanism is modelled and the geometric errors caused by the refraction are calculated from the model simulation. This paper shows that a maximum geometric error of 1 pixel (7m) occurs from the standard atmospheric condition. Severer geometric distortions in images cause from an atmopheric abnormality.

This study was carried to find out the soil characteristics of landslide site and to develope landslide prediction method by seismic refraction prospecting. For these aims, landslide condition and travel time were investigated at 68 Landslide sites over the country during 1990 to 1991. The results were as follows. 1. The surface of rupture was included mainly in C layer. Its Hardness was less than 3kg / $\textrm{cm}^2$ at the upper pare of landslide. 2. When the profile line length was 20m, the range of travel time was 40 to 90 msec. The travel time did not differ between bedrocks. 3. Refraction distance ranged from 1 to 7m and mean of that was 2.5m. Travel time was increased according to receiving distance without large variance in the refraction distance but that was appeared large variance out of the refraction distance on slope that has shallow soil depth and discontinuous ground surface. Therefore, the spread distance must be shorten to 10-l5m. 4. The seismic velocity at the first layer(layer of rupture) was less than 500m1sec by degree of weathering and the velocity at the second layer decreased in order of Granite> Granitic gneiss >Sedimentary rock. 5. The first layer observed by seismic refraction was contained C layer that has parent material and weathered rocks of hardness 10-20kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 6. Among the range of seismic velocity was less than 200m/sec in 63% of the total plots, 200-300m/sec in 34% and 300-500m /sec in 3%. 7. There was a proportional relationship between seismic prospecting soil depth and executive soil depth, and seismic propection soil depth was about 10 to 20cm deeper than the order.
Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate effects of increased breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) which is the standard measurement of alcohol consumption in sobriety test under current laws on visual acuity and values of objective refraction. Methods: For twenty three males in 20s (average age $21.17{\pm}2.19$ years, body mass index (BMI) $22.09{\pm}2.16$) were selected. Distance and near visual test was performed at BrAC of 0%, 0.05% and 0.08%, and objective refraction with open-field auto-refractometer was also performed at different BrAC. Results: As breath alcohol concentration is increased, distance visual acuity was decreased, which was statistically significant, but near visual acuity was not changed. Also, values of objective refraction tended to be increased towards minus as breath alcohol concentration is increased. Conclusions: As breath alcohol concentration is increased, corrected visual acuity is decreased and refractive power is towards minus, it is necessary that visual acuity test and refraction measurement should be conducted under sober condition.
The law of refraction, which is called Snell's law in physics, has a significant meaning in mathematics history. After Snell empirically discovered the refraction law $\frac{v_1}{sin{\theta}_1}=\frac{v_2}{sin{\theta}_2$ through countless observations, many mathematicians endeavored to deduce it from the least time principle, and the need to surmount these difficulties was one of the driving forces behind the early development of calculus by Leibniz. Fermat solved it far advance of others by inventing a method that eventually led to the differential calculus. Historically, mathematics has developed in close connection with physics. Physics needs mathematics as an auxiliary discipline, but physics can also belong to the lived-through reality from which mathematics is provided with subject matters and suggestions. The refraction law is a suggestive example of interrelations between mathematical and physical theories. Freudenthal said that a purpose of mathematics education is to learn how to apply mathematics as well as to learn ready-made mathematics. I think that the refraction law could be a relevant content for this purpose. It is pedagogically sound to start in high school with a quasi-empirical approach to refraction. In college, mathematics and physics majors can study diverse mathematical proof including Fermat's original method in the context of discussing the phenomenon of refraction of light. This would be a ideal environment for such pursuit.
Purpose: We compared static retinoscopy in eyes opened with cycloplegic refraction depending on the hyperopia for school-aged children. Methods: There were 59 eyes (30 patients) who were divided into 3 groups - the mild hyperopia (+0.25 D ~ +1.00 D), moderate hyperopia (+1.25 D ~ +2.00 D) and high hyperopia (+2.25 D or more). They all had 0.8 visual acuity or more. Autorefraction and retinoscopy were performed prior to cycloplegic refraction, and then copmared with manifest refraction and cycloplegic refraction. Results: Hyperopia measured with static retinoscopy tends to be measured higher than manifest refraction for school-aged children. Changes of spherical power was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Changes of astigmatism was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The difference between cycloplegic refraction and static retinoscopy was not significant for hyperopic school-aged children. The use of retinoscopy was limited for opticians because of legal constraints. The usage of static retinoscopy in eyes opened for optician should be generalized under the conditions not using the cycloplegic.

A lake seismic survey was carried out to investigate possible geohazards for construction of the underground LPG storage at Namyang Lake. The proposed survey site has a land-lake combined geography and furthermore water depth of the lake is shallow. Therefore, various seismic methods such as marine single channel high resolution seismic reflection survey, sonobuoy refraction survey, land refraction survey and land-lake combined refraction survey were applied. Total survey amounts are 34 line-km of high resolution lake seismic survey, 14 lines of sonobuoy refraction survey, 890 m of land refraction survey and 8 lines of land-lake combined refraction survey. During the reflection survey, there were severe water reverberations from the lake bottom obscured subsurface profiling. These strong multiple events appeared in most of the survey area except the northern and southern area near the embankment where seems to be accumulated mainly mud dominated depositions. The sonobuoy refraction profiles also showed the same Phenomena as those of reflection survey. Meanwhile the results of the land-lake combined refraction survey showed relatively better qualities. However, the land refraction survey did not so due to low velocity soil layer and electrical noise. Summarized results from the lake seismic survey are that acoustic basement with relatively flat pattern appeared 30m below water level and showed three types of bedrock such as fresh, moderately weathered and weathered type. According to the results of the combined refraction survey, a velocity distribution pattern of the lake bottom shows three types of seismic velocity zone such as >4.5 km/s, 4.5-4.0km/s and <4.0km/s. The major fault lineament in the area showed NW-SE trend which was different from the Landsat image interpretation. A drilling was confirmed estimated faults by seismic survey.
In land seismic exploration, irregular surface topography and weathering layer in near surface distorts the reflected signals of data. Therefore, typical land seismic data should be compensated for this distortion by static correction. To perform the static correction, near-surface velocity is required, which can be obtained by seismic refraction survey. However, land seismic data is often acquired in a limited form of geometry depending on the equipment availability, accessibility condition, and permission for the survey site. In this situation, refraction analysis should be performed using reflection data because it is impossible to acquire refraction-oriented data due to limited source and receiver geometry. In this study, we aimed to analyze the reliability of the results obtained by refraction traveltime tomography when using reflection data with a limited number of sources and receivers from irregular surface topography. By comparing the inversion result from irregular topography with that from flat surface, we found that the surface topography affects the reliability of the inversion results to some degree. We also found that the number of sources has little effect on the inversion results unless the number of sources are very small. On the other hand, we observed that velocity distortion occurred in the overlapped part of receiver arrays when using a limited number of receivers, and therefore suggested the size of the least overlapping ratio to avoid the velocity distortion. Finally, we performed numerical tests for the model which simulates the surface topography and acquisition geometry of the survey region and verified the reliability analysis of inversion results. We identified reliable areas and suspicious area of the inverted velocity model by applying the analysis results to field data.

The refraction expansion joints have been newly developed by complementing the problems of shock, noise, replaceability, displacement in the direction perpendicular to bridge, vertical difference, which are problems of existing expansion joints. The Refraction expansion joints are characterized by continuous surfaces with small impact and low noise. The behavior of the Refraction expansion joints performs the bridge expansion behavior by rotation of the link. In the rotational behavior of the link, the bolt is the central axis of the behavior. Therefore, it can be said that the durability of the bolt is very important. However, the theoretical and experimental verification of the bolt durability of the Refraction expansion joint is lacking. In this paper, to verify the fatigue durability of the bolt, test specimens with a 300 mm Refraction expansion joint were fabricated. A strain gauge dedicated to the bolt was installed inside the manufactured test specimen bolt. The test method was applied in accordance with KS F 4425. The fatigue durability of the bolts assembled inside the diaphragm expansion joint was confirmed by the repeated fatigue test of 2,000,000 cycles.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of a VR (Virtual Refractor), which is a simulator for a PR (Practical Refraction), as an educational tool. Methods: Twenty four third year students enrolled in the department of visual optics volunteered for VR education. Each student attended a VR training course and practiced with the VR by themselves. One month later, each student tested three virtual subjects on the VR and one real subject on the PR and were given a performance score for each refraction. And the scores for the virtual and practical refractions were compared. In addition, a self-report questionnaire based on a five point Likert-scale was designed, consisting of domains such as spontaneous participation, contribution for the refraction, confirmity of the VR and PR, and necessity of the VR. Results: The Spearman's correlation coefficient between the testing score of the practical and virtual refractions indicated a significantly correlation (R=0.71, p<0.001). In the questionnaire, the mean score of the domains was 3.67${\pm}$0.96 and it indicated that students expressed that using the VR was beneficial. The correlation value among these domains was a high significant level, 0.91~0.68 (p<0.001). Conclusions: Although the VR required certain improvements in its concentration and systematic approaches for practical situations, it showed a high correlation between the VR and the PR and represented a positive evaluation in the PR.

The purpose of AR and HR coating is acquire the very low reflection rate and the high reflection rate through the deposition of a thin film using the refraction ofmaterial. Basically if the high refractive material and the low refractive material are chosen and the condition for the experiment is determined, then we solve theproject with the optical design and multi thin film coating. First of all, we choose $SiO_2$for the low refractive material and $TiO_2$ for the high refractive material and apply Sputtering System easy to control the refraction rate and excellent in reconstruction to the equipment of thin film multiplication. For the control of the refraction rate and growth rate we modify RF Power and the ratio of Gas(Ar:O2), And we use Ellipsometer for estimation and analysis of the refraction rate and growth rate and AFM&SEM for the analysis of surface and component.
