A New Reflective Display Mode for Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal.

  • In this work, we proposed a reflective antiferroelectric liquid crystal display (AFLCD) using a half-wave cell whose tilt angle is $22.5^{\circ}$. To check the validity of our design, we fabricated a reflective half-wave AFLC cell of which tilt angle is $24.9^{\circ}$, and measured viewing angle dependent reflectance and VIS reflection spectra. In the results, the half-wave AFLC cell in the reflective configuration exhibits high brightness, high contrast ratio of 20:1.

  • 본 논문에서는 명암대비와 밝기를 높일 수 있는 반사형 쌍안정 TN셀의 광학 조건을 최적화 하였다. 세 파장(450 nm, 550nm, 650nm)의 광 특성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 편광판 각도를 다른 광학 파라미터보다 더욱 정밀하게 제어해야 하며, dΔn 값이 밝은 상태의 색 특성에 영향을 미침을 알 수 있었다. 광대역 Ν4 필름을 사용해서 반사형 쌍안정 TN셀을 제작해 10.6:1이라는 명암대비를 얻었다.

  • This paper proposes a transflective configuration of the dual operating mode liquid crystal display, which has transmissive dynamic and reflective memory parts in its pixel. By employing a wideband structure and optimizing the cell-gap of the liquid crystal layer, the reflective memory part shows a very low reflectance in the dark state, good dispersion properties for the entire visible range, as well as high reflectance in the bright state. The transmissive dynamic part is designed to have the same cell-gap and rubbing direction as those of the reflective part. The driving voltage of the dynamic part and transmittance of the bright state can also be controlled by using compensation film with a positive a-plate, which can compensate the reflective part. Experimental results in the memory part operation demonstrate that the contrast ratio is over 50:1 and the reflectance in the dark state is reduced to 56% on average of that of the conventional dual mode configuration for the entire visible range. The contrast ratio of the dynamic part is 300:1.

적색 비닐멀칭과 흑색 비닐멀칭의 반사광 특성과 참외와 토마토의 품질과 수량에 미치는 영향 (Characteristics of Reflective Light over Red and Black Plastic Mulch, and Effect on the Quality and Yield of the Oriental Melon and Tomato)

  • 우리나라에서 주로 사용되고 있는 흑색 비닐멀칭과 신개발된 적색 비닐멀칭의 표면 반사광 특성을 분석하고 참외와 토마토에 대한 영향을 구명하여 작물생산에 대한 적용 가능성을 검토하였다. 적색 비닐멀칭의 표면에서 반사된 적색광과 초적색광의 일일 누적 강도는 흑색 비닐멀칭보다 2.6배 강했다. 적색광과 초적색광 반사광의 강도는 적색 비닐멀칭의 표면 높이 30 cm에서 가장 강하였다. 일중 태양광 강도가 강한 오후 1시 20분의 흑색 비닐멀칭의 Red/F-Red는 1.14, 적색 비닐멀칭은 0.93, 태양광은 1.16으로 적색 비닐멀칭이 흑색 비닐멀칭보다 초적색광 강도가 높았다. 적색 비닐멀칭의 Red/F-Red는 표면 높이 30 cm에서 가장 낮았으며 표면높이가 높아질수록 초적색광 강도가 감소하여 Red/F-Red는 증가하였다. 적색 비닐멀칭 반사광의 Red/F-Red는 정오부터 오후 4시경까지는 흑색 비닐멀칭보다 낮게 경과하였다. 흑색 비닐멀칭 처리구보다 적색 비닐멀칭 처리구의 참외 과실의 무게가 증가하여 수량이 증가하였고 당도가 높았다. 토마토의 과실 무게와 당도도 적색 비닐멀칭 처리가 흑색 비닐멀칭 처리구보다 높았다. 지중온도는 적색 비닐멀칭 처리가 흑색 비닐멀칭 처리보다 다소 낮은 경향이었다. 따라서 적색 비닐멀칭으로 토양을 피복하면 작물생산에 적색광과 초적색광을 더 많이 이용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

  • Multi-layer films of $SiN_x/SiO_x$/InSnO with anti-reflective effect were grown by new-concept plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system (PECVD) with hybrid plasma source (HPS). Anti-reflective effect of $SiN_x/SiO_x$/InSnO was investigated as a function of ratio of $SiN_x$ and $SiO_x$ thickness. Multi-layers deposited by PECVD with HPS represents the enhancement of anti-reflective effect with high transmittance, comparing to the layers by conventional radio frequency (RF) sputtering system. This change is strongly related to the optical and physical properties of each layer, such as refractive index, composition, film density, and surface roughness depending on the deposition system.

  • 본 논문에서는 Kerr 매질로 채워진 반사형 Fabry-Perot etalon 구조(Kerr F-P etalon)의 광스위칭 소자를 제안하고 편광회전특성과 편광회전의 쌍안정 특성을 분석하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과는 100% 정도의 높은 편광회전효율과 입사 펌프광의 세기에 대하여 넓은 쌍안정 영역을 가지는 것으로 나타났다.

All-optical Regenerator Using Semi-reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier

  • We have proposed and theoretically verified an optical regenerator using a single semi-reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (SR-SOA). To explain the operation characteristics and the operation condition of the proposed opticalregenerator, the simplified gain model for the SR-SOA is introduced and confirmed by comparing the result of the SOA simulation based on the transfer matrix method (TMM). The simulation results show that both extinction ratio (ER) enhancement and signal amplification can be achieved in the proposed regenerator.

편광 흡수성 광기전성 고분자 박막 연구 (Polarizing Photovoltaic Polymer Films for Reflective Solar-LCDs)

  • We present the results of a study of the polarizing photovoltaic (PV) effects in an aligned polymer bulk heterojuction PV layer. The fairly uniform in-plane uniaxial alignment of the PV layer with a macroscopic axial orientational order parameter of 0.40 was achieved by means of a simple rubbing technique. Moreover, reflective polarizing PSCs having the aligned PV layers were applied to power-generating reflective type liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which exhibited a maximum contrast ratio of 1.7. These results form a promising foundation for various energy harvesting polarization dependent opto-electrical LCD device applications.

Enhancement of the Optical Performance by Optimization of Optical Sheets in Direct-illumination LCD Backlight

  • The structure of the prism sheet and the reflective polarizer sheet in the direct - illumination liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight is optimized and fabricated. The apex angle of the prism sheet was changed from 90 degree to 96.5 and 101.5 degree and the angular spread of the diffuser films attached on the reflective polarizer sheet was changed from 7 to 1.5 degrees. The measured view angle, the normal luminance, and the contrast ratio from the optimized backlight unit showed improved optical performances.

An Analysis of Reflectivity and Response Time by Charge-to-Mass of Charged Particles in an Electrophoretic Display

  • A reflective electronic display that uses negatively and positively charged particles has excellent bistability, a welldefined threshold voltage, and an extremely fast response time in comparison with other reflective displays. This type of display shows images through the movement of charged particles whose motion depends on the value of q/m (charge per mass for a particle). However, the ratio q/m can easily be changed by the forces acting on the charged particles in a cell of the panel and by friction that occurs after mixing oppositely charged particles and in the particle-insertion process. In this study, we propose a method to determine the appropriate range of q/m by using the reflectivity and response time of charged particles to modify q/m. In this manner, the electrical and optical properties of reflective displays are improved.
