  • This paper develops a four-unknown refined plate theory and the Galerkin method to investigate the size-dependent stability behavior of functionally graded material (FGM) under the thermal environment and the FGM having temperature-dependent material properties. In the current study two scale coefficients are considered to examine buckling behavior much accurately. Reuss micromechanical scheme is utilized to estimate the material properties of inhomogeneous nano-size plates. Governing differential equations, classical and non-classical boundary conditions are obtained by utilizing Hamiltonian principles. The results showed the high importance of considering temperature-dependent material properties for buckling analysis. Different influencing parametric on the buckling is studied which may help in design guidelines of such complex structures.

  • Equilibrium equations of a porous FG plate resting on Winkler-Pasternak foundations with various boundary conditions are derived using a new refined shear deformation theory. Different types of porosity distribution rate are considered. Governing equations are obtained including the plate-foundation interaction. This new model meets the nullity of the transverse shear stress at the upper and lower surfaces of the plate. The novel rule of mixture is proposed to describe and approximate material properties of the FG plates with different distribution case of porosity. The validity of this theory is studied by comparing some of the present results with other higher-order theories reported in the literature. Effects of variation of porosity distribution rate, boundary conditions, foundation parameter, power law index, plate aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio on the deflections and stresses are all discussed.

  • In this paper, a size-dependent dynamic investigation of a porous metal foams microbeamsis presented. The novelty of this study is to use a metal foam microbeam that contain porosities based on the refined high order shear deformation beam model, with sinusoidal shear strain function, and the modified strain gradient theory (MSGT) for the first time. The Lagrange's principle combined with differential quadrature hierarchicalfinite element method (DQHFEM) are used to obtain the porous microbeam governing equations. The solutions are presented for the natural frequencies of the porous and homogeneoustype microbeam. The obtained results are validated with the analytical methods found in the literature, in order to confirm the accuracy of the presented resolution method. The influences of the shape of porosity distribution, slenderness ratio, microbeam thickness, and porosity coefficient on the free vibration of the porous microbeams are explored in detail. The results of this paper can be used in various design formetallic foammicro-structuresin engineering.

  • The current paper discusses the dynamic and stability responses of cross-ply composite laminated plates by employing a refined quasi-3D trigonometric shear deformation theory. The proposed theory takes into consideration shear deformation and thickness stretching by a trigonometric variation of in-plane and transverse displacements through the plate thickness and assures the vanished shear stresses conditions on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate. The strong point of the new formulation is that the displacements field contains only 4 unknowns, which is less than the other shear deformation theories. In addition, the present model considers the thickness extension effects (εz≠0). The presence of the Winkler-Pasternak elastic base is included in the mathematical formulation. The Hamilton's principle is utilized in order to derive the four differentials' equations of motion, which are solved via Navier's technique of simply supported structures. The accuracy of the present 3-D theory is demonstrated by comparing fundamental frequencies and critical buckling loads numerical results with those provided using other models available in the open literature.

  • This paper presents a free vibration analysis of plates made of functionally graded materials and resting on two-layer elastic foundations by proposing a non-polynomial four variable refined plate theory. Undetermined integral terms are introduced in the proposed displacement field and unlike the conventional higher shear deformation theory (HSDT), the present one contains only four unknowns. Equations of motion are derived via the Hamilton's principles and solved using Navier's procedure. Accuracy of the present theory is demonstrated by comparing the results of numerical examples with the ones available in literature.

  • In this paper an efficient and simple refined shear deformation theory is presented for the free vibration of Functionally Graded Plates Under Various Boundary Conditions. The theory accounts for a quadratic variation of the transverse shear strains across the thickness, and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. The number of independent unknowns of present theory is four, as against five in other shear deformation theories. The plates are considered of the type having two opposite sides simply-supported, and the two other sides having combinations of simply-supported, clamped, and free boundary conditions. The mechanical properties of functionally graded material are assumed to vary according to power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle. The results of this theory are compared with those of other shear deformation theories. Various numerical results including the effect of boundary conditions, power-law index, plate aspect ratio, and side-to-thickness ratio on the free vibration of FGM plates are presented.

  • In this research, mechanical buckling of hybrid functionally graded plates is considered using a new four variable refined plate theory. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The theory presented is variationally consistent, does not require shear correction factor, and gives rise to transverse shear stress variation such that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness satisfying shear stress free surface conditions. The plate properties are assumed to be varied through the thickness following a simple power law distribution in terms of volume fraction of material constituents. Governing equations are derived from the principle of minimum total potential energy. The closed-form solution of a simply supported rectangular plate subjected to in-plane loading has been obtained by using the Navier method. The effectiveness of the theories is brought out through illustrative examples.

  • In the present paper, a simple refined nth-higher-order shear deformation theory is applied for the free vibration analysis of laminated composite plates. The proposed displacement field is based on a novel kinematic in which include the undetermined integral terms and contains only four unknowns, as against five or more in case of other higher-order theories. The present theory accounts for adequate distribution of the transverse shear strains through the plate thickness and satisfies the shear stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate, therefore, it does not require problem dependent shear correction factor. The governing equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle and solved via Navier-type to obtain closed form solutions. The numerical results of non-dimensional natural frequencies obtained by using the present theory are presented and compared with those of other theories available in the literature to verify the validity of present solutions. It can be concluded that the present refined theory is accurate and efficient in predicting the natural frequencies of isotropic, orthotropic and laminated composite plates.

  • A novel three variable refined plate theory (TVRPT) is developed in this article for laminated composite plates for the first time. The theory takes into account the nonlinear variation of transverse shear deformations, and satisfies the boundary conditions of zero traction on the plate surfaces without considering the "shear correction factor". The important characteristic of this new kinematic is that the unknowns numbers is only 3 as is employed in "classical plate theory" (CPT). The numerical results of the current theory are compared with 3D-elasticity solutions and the calculations of "first order theories" and other higher order models found in the literature.
