  • Gas phase and particulate phase radicals in mainstream cigarette smoke were determined Electron Spin Resonance(ESR) spectroscopy. The free radicals in particulate phase have been investigated by benzene extract of Cambridge Filter Pad containing the smoke condensate. Spin trapping method in conjunction with ESR was used to investigate free radicals in the gas phase of cigarette smoke. Several analytical experiments were conducted in order to determine the optimal conditions for maximum signal intensities and reproducibility of results. All the tests were optimized and normalized using the University of Kentucky 2R4F reference cigarette. The optimal conditions were 0.6 mL for analysis volume of ESR, $4{\sim}5\;mL$ for collection volume of spin-adducts, and PBN for quantification of free radicals in gas phase. The radical levels of Kentucky 2R4F cigarettes were found $2.18{\times}10^{14}\;spins/cig.$ and $2.10{\times}10^{15}\;spins/cig.$ in gas phase.

  • Urinary free and acetylated polyamine profiles have been investigated for their potential usefulness as biochemical markers of cancer in a control of group comprised of healthy volunteers (32 cases) and patients with various types of cancers(48 cases). The nine (5 free and 4 acetylated) endogeneous polyamines were simultaneously determined by a sensitive capillary gas chromatography/nitrogen-phosphorus detector (GC/NPD). The newly modified (simple and convenient) method was developed and the compounds were isolated by adsorption onto silica gel and derivatized by heptafluorobutyric anhydride to enhance their specificity on gas chromatograms. The good quality-control data were obtained through the precision and accuracy test and the recovery range of them was 48.6 ~ 101.2 %. The Korean reference values of urinary polyamines were established and significant differences were found in cancer patients compared with normal subjects. Also, to eliminate subject variations, precursors to product concentration ratios were compared between cancer patients and control group. The ratios of both putrescine to spermidine and total (free plus acetylated) putrescine to total spermidine were significantly greater in cancer patients than in normal subjects.

  • The differential equations governing free vibrations of the elastic arches with hollow section are derived in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Natural frequencies is computed numerically for parabolic arches with both clamped ends and both hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and reference are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the breadth ratio, the thickness ratio and the rise to span length ratio.

  • Fasciclin 1 (FAS1) is an extracellular protein whose aggregation in cornea leads to visual impairment. While a number of FAS1 mutants have been studied that exhibit enhanced/decreased aggregation propensity, no structural information has been provided so far that is associated with distinct aggregation potential. In this study, we have investigated the structural and thermodynamic characteristics of the wild-type FAS1 and its two mutants, R555Q and R555W, by using molecular dynamics simulations and three-dimensional reference interaction site model (3D-RISM) theory. We find that the hydrophobic solvent accessible surface area increases due to hydrophobic core repacking in the C-terminus caused by the mutation. We also find that the solvation free energy of the mutants increases due to the enhanced non-native H-bonding. These structural and thermodynamic changes upon mutation contribute to understand the aggregation of these mutants.

  • The authors aim to design further an upgraded and self-contained position fixing system to meet the future commercial requirements. As a first step this paper is to investigate the theoretical structure of position fixing based on the nature of free gyro, in which the tilt angles of the two spin axes at an arbitrary position are measured respectively and the elapsed time with respect to a reference position or starting point is observed And it illustrates some limitations to be expected in this system.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine some acoustic characteristics in the ear canal. It was assumed that a sound outside the external auditory canal could be different from the sound inside the external auditory canal. The acoustic signals were captured by a probe microphone placed at a distance within 1 cm from the tympanic membrane, and a reference microphone was placed over the upper pinna. Three vowels /a/, /i/, /u/ were recorded from a normal adult male speaker. The parameters such as the formant frequency ($Fl\simF5$) and the peak intensity were measured using a speech analyser, PCquirer. It was found that the entering part of the external auditory canal functions as a narrowing point as to the speech that passes through the free field. Results show that acoustic characteristics were changed for speech discrimination rather than speech perception.

  • Free viewpoint image synthesis technology is one of the important technologies in the MPEG-I (Immersive) standard. RVS (Reference View Synthesizer) developed by MPEG-I and in use in MPEG group is a DIBR (Depth Information-Based Rendering) program that generates an image at a virtual (intermediate) viewpoint from multiple viewpoints' inputs. RVS uses the mesh surface method based on computer graphics, and outperforms the pixel-based ones by 2.5dB or more compared to the previous pixel method. Even though its OpenGL version provides 10 times speed up over the non OpenGL based one, it still shows a non-real-time processing speed, i.e., 0.75 fps on the two 2k resolution input images. In this paper, we analyze the internal of RVS implementation and modify its structure, achieving 34 times speed up, therefore, real-time performance (22-26 fps), through the 3 key improvements: 1) the reuse of OpenGL buffers and texture objects 2) the parallelization of file I/O and OpenGL execution 3) the parallelization of GPU shader program and buffer transfer.

  • This paper presents the minimum submergence depth of an underwater vehicle that can remove the effect of free surface on the resistance of the underwater vehicle. The total resistance of the underwater vehicle in fully submerged modes comprises only viscous pressure and friction resistances, and no wave resistance should be present, based on the free surface effect. In a model test performed in this study, the resistance is measured in the range of 2 to 10 kn (1.03-5.14 m/s) under depth conditions of 850 mm (2.6D) and 1250 mm (3.8D), respectively, and the residual resistance coefficients are compared. Subsequently, resistance analysis is performed via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to investigate the free surface effect based on various submergence depths. First, the numerical analysis results in the absence of free surface conditions and the model test results are compared to show the tendency of the resistance coefficients and the reliability of the CFD simulation results. Subsequently, numerical analysis results of submergence depth presented in a reference paper are compared with the model test results. These two sets of results confirm that the resistance increased due to the free surface effect as the high speed and depth approach the free surface. Therefore, to identify a fully submerged depth that is not affected by the free surface effect, case studies for various depths are conducted via numerical analysis, and a correlation for the fully submerged depth based on the Froude number of an underwater vehicle is derived.

  • In this study, the force and moment acting on a Joubert BB2 submarine model at depths near the free surface were measured through a captive model test with the scale ratio of 1/15. Based on the experiment, the pitch moment and heave force due to the "Tail suction effect", including the change in surge force with depth near the free surface, were quantitatively analyzed. The change of force and moment according to the relative position of the sail and the free surface was reviewed with the free surface waves generated for each depths. As a result, the angle of attack of the hull to counteract the pitch moment induced by the tail suction effect was derived. The effect of the hydrostatic moment component according to the angle of attack on the equilibrium of pitch moment was also taken into account. The control plane performance tests for the X-type rudder and sail plane were conducted in snorkel and surface depth conditions to figure out the control plane angles for the neutral level flight of the submarine at near free surface. The results of this study are expected to be used as a reference data for the neutral level flight of the submarine at near free surface operation in the free running model test as well as numerical studies.

  • In this paper, the structure of modified multiplication-free adaptive filter(M-MADF) and convergence analysis are presented. To evaluate the performance of proposed M-MADF algorithm, fractionally spaced equalizer (FSE) is used. The input signals are quantized using DPCM and the reference signals is processed using a first-order linear prediction filter, and the outputs are processed by a conventional adaptive filter. The filter coefficients are updated using the Sign algorithm. Under the assumption that the primary and reference signals are zero mean, wide-sense stationary and Gaussian, theoretical results for the coefficient misalignment vector and its autocorrelation matrix of the filter are driven. The convergence properties of Sign. MADF and M-MADF algorithm for updating of the coefficients of a digital filter of the fractionally spaced equalizer (FSE) are investigated and compared with one another. The convergence properties are characterized by the steady state error and the convergence speed. It is shown that the convergence speed of M-MADF is almost same as Sign algorithm and is faster that MADF in the condition of same steady error. Especially it is very useful for high correlated signals.
