  • As the distance between GPS rover station and GPS base station increases, more decorrelated positioning errors limit the ability for PDGPS(Precise Differential GPS). The objective of this paper is to present the improvement of using VRS(virtual reference station) based on multiple GPS reference station network to single reference station for static positioning in post-processing mode. For this, the VRS observations from GPS observations of real reference stations are derived by using Web service in post-mode. The coordinates of check point post-processed by 27 kind of VRS observations compared with the known ones.

  • Detection and identification of targets from remotely sensed imagery are of great interest for civilian and military application. This paper presents an algorithm for target detection in high spatial resolution imagery based on the spectral and the dimensional characteristics of the reference target. In this algorithm, the spectral and the dimensional information of the reference target is extracted automatically from the sample image of the reference target. Then in the entire image, the candidate target pixels are extracted based on the spectral characteristics of the reference target. Finally, groups of candidate pixels which form isolated spatial objects of similar size to that of the reference target are extracted as detected targets. The experimental test results showed that even though the algorithm detected spatial objects which has different shape as targets if the spectral and the dimensional characteristics are similar to that of the reference target, it could detect 97.5% of the targets in the image. Using hyperspectral image and utilizing the shape information are expected to increase the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • Most of the way shape estimation method using reference sources assume that the reference sources are in the farfield. That is, the reference sources are assumed to be far from the array. However, in applications of the array with reference sources, the reference sources are not far from the way, so that in practical ocean environments, the conventional method using farfield source model fail to estimate the positions of the hydrophones. In this paper, based on the nearfield source model, a subspace-based array shape estimation method was proposed. In the proposed method, nearfield reference source is modeled using the differential time delay at each hydrophone, and nearfield parameters are derived. Using these parameters, a subspace-based array shape estimation method that generalizes the existing farfield subspace fitting method which can work regardless of the range of the source is proposed. The Cramer-Rao lower bound for the proposed method is investigated. The results of the numerical experiments indicate that the proposed method performs well in estimating the shape of a perturbed way regardless of the ranges of the reference sources.

  • Based on the radio wave propagation measurement of DGPS land-based reference stations, the DGPS service coverage and signal quality in the receiving points are analyzed in this paper. The DGPS signal strength and SNR in the receiving point are measured in the winter and summer season, respectively. In case of DGPS reference station that can not provide the designed service coverage, the solution to improve the service coverage is presented in this paper. Almost all DGPS reference station except reference station with low ground conductivity or mountainous terrain provide the DGPS service coverages of 80% or more of the designed service area. The service coverages of DGPS reference stations can be improved to pre-designed service area in case of installation management of DGPS site on the plain terrain and good ground conductivity. It is necessary to get the high efficiency of transmitting antenna to improve the service area.

  • A new reference point location method based on an edge map is proposed, where an orientation map is defined and used to find the edge map. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively detect the core point in poor quality and arch-type fingerprint images and produces better results in terms of the detection rate and accuracy than the sine map-based method.

  • In this paper, we propose a new positioning scheme for accuracy improvement of Relay-based Navigation System. The conventional relay-based system occurs larger vertical error than horizontal one due to structural characteristics that positioning references are located toward same direction and a location of user is estimated by triangulation technique. In the proposed positioning scheme, the user position is reestimated using an additional virtual reference which is generated based on position information of reference stations in navigation signals and estimated initial user position. The nearest reference station from the estimated user position is selected as a virtual reference to minimize the effect of geometrical factor. The vertical error decreases by using reference points on multi planes, therefore, accurate positioning is possible than the conventional scheme. We demonstrated that the accuracy of a user is improved through simulation results.

  • The non-minimum phase characteristic of a flexible manipulator makes tracking control of its tip difficult. The level of the tip tracking performance of a flexible manipulator is significantly affected by the characteristics of the tip reference trajectory as well as the characteristics of the flexible manipulator system. This paper addresses the question of how to best specify a reference trajectory for the tip of a flexible manipulator to follow in order to achieve the objectives of reducing : tip tracking error, residual tip vibration, and the required actuation effort at the manipulator joint. A novel method of tip-based learning controller for the flexible manipulator system is proposed in the paper, where a model of the flexible manipulator system with a command shaping filter is used to generate a smooth and realizable tip reference trajectory for a tip-based learning controller.

  • The main objective of this study was to assess reference evapotranspiration based on multiple GCMs (General Circulation Models) and estimation methods. In this study, 10 GCMs based on the RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) 4.5 scenario were used to estimate reference evapotranspiration. 54 ASOS (Automated Synoptic Observing System) data were constructed by statistical downscaling techniques. The meteorological variables of precipitation, maximum temperature and minimum temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation were produced using GCMs. For the past and future periods, we estimated reference evapotranspiration by GCMs and analyzed the statistical characteristics and analyzed its uncertainty. Five methods (BC: Blaney-Criddle, HS: Hargreaves-Samani, MK: Makkink, MS: Matt-Shuttleworth, and PM: Penman-Monteith) were selected to analyze the uncertainty by reference evapotranspiration estimation methods. We compared the uncertainty of reference evapotranspiration method by the variable expansion and analyzed which variables greatly influence reference evapotranspiration estimation. The posterior probabilities of five methods were estimated as BC: 0.1792, HS: 0.1775, MK: 0.2361, MS: 0.2054, and PM: 0.2018. The posterior probability indicated how well reference evapotranspiration estimated with 10 GCMs for five methods reflected the estimated reference evapotranspiration using the observed data. Through this study, we analyzed the overall characteristics of reference evapotranspiration according to GCMs and reference evapotranspiration estimation methods The results of this study might be used as a basic data for preparing the standard method of reference evapotranspiration to derive the water management method under climate change.

  • The human reference genome, maintained by the Genome Reference Consortium, is conceivably the most complete genome assembly ever, since its first construction. It has continually been improved by incorporating corrections made to the previous assemblies, thanks to various technological advances. Many currently-ongoing population sequencing projects have been based on this reference genome, heightening hopes of the development of useful medical applications of genomic information, thanks to the recent maturation of high-throughput sequencing technologies. However, just one reference genome does not fit all the populations across the globe, because of the large diversity in genomic structures and technical limitations inherent to short read sequencing methods. The recent success in de novo construction of the highly contiguous Asian diploid genome AK1, by combining single molecule technologies with routine sequencing data without resorting to traditional clone-by-clone sequencing and physical mapping, reveals the nature of genomic structure variation by detecting thousands of novel structural variations and by finally filling in some of the prior gaps which had persistently remained in the current human reference genome. Now it is expected that the AK1 genome, soon to be paired with more upcoming de novo assembled genomes, will provide a chance to explore what it is really like to use ancestry-specific reference genomes instead of hg19/hg38 for population genomics. This is a major step towards the furthering of genetically-based precision medicine.

  • To investigate applicability of the reference stress approach as simplified inelastic stress analysis to estimate local creep rupture, detailed finite element stress analyses of a T-piece pipe with different inner pressure and system loading levels are performed. The reference stresses are obtained from the finite element (FE) limit analysis based on elastic-perfectly-plastic materials, from which the local reference stress for creep rupture is determined from R5. The resulting inelastic stresses are compared with elastic stresses resulting from linear elastic FE calculations. Furthermore they are also compared with the stresses from full elastic-creep FE analyses. It shows that the stresses estimated from the reference stress approach compare well with those from full elastic-creep FE analysis, which are significantly lower than the elastic stress results. Considering time and efforts for full inelastic creep analysis of structures, the reference stress approach is shown to be a powerful tool for creep rupture estimates and also to reduce conservatism of elastic stress analysis significantly.
