  • In this paper, we propose a heuristic method to select features using a Two-Phase Markov Blanket-based (TPMB) algorithm. The first phase, filtering phase, of TPMB algorithm works by filtering the obviously redundant features. A non-linear correlation method based on Information theory is used as a metric to measure the redundancy of a feature [1]. In second phase, approximating phase, the Markov Blanket (MB) of a system is estimated by employing the concept of cross entropy to identify the MB. We perform experiments on microarray data and report two popular dataset, AML-ALL [3] and colon tumor [4], in this paper. The experimental results show that the TPMB algorithm can significantly reduce the number of features while maintaining the accuracy of the classifiers.

  • The carrier-based space vector pulse width modulation(SVPWM), which is considered as highly simple and efficient PWM technology, can be also used in multilevel inverters. The method was originally designed for the two-level inverter and developed to the diode clamped multilevel inverter structure. however it may be noted that it also cause bad switch utilization in cascaded multilevel inverter. This paper introduces an improved carrier-based SVPWM scheme, which is fully suitable for cascaded multilevel inverter topologies because it can achieve the optimized switch utilization through the redistribution of the triangular carrier waves considering leg voltage redundancies while having the advantages of the conventional carrier-based SVPWM. Using simulation and experimental results, the superior performance of new PWM method is shown.

  • This paper presents a method for reliability evaluation of a telecommunication network with variable link-capacities when the simple paths of the network are known. The LP-EM, suggested by Lee and Park (2001), identifies a composite path as a subnetwork and adds only a minimal set of links at each step which gives maximal increase on the maximum capacity flow of the subnetwork. Thereby the LP-EM reduces the possible occurrence of redundant composite paths significantly over other existing methods. Based on the LP-EM, our method further reduces the possible redundancy by identifying such simple paths that could give no increase of maximum capacity flow on the current subnetwork and excluding those simple paths from consideration in the process of constructing composite paths.

  • This paper proposes a new voltage reference generation method for Four-Switch Inverters(FSI) with compensation of the neutral DC-link voltage variation. Since FSIs have the split DC-link causing the inherent problem of voltage fluctuations in the upper and lower capacitors, it is required to take account the voltage difference between the top and bottom capacitors. In this paper, to reduce the effect by the voltage variation, reference voltages are modified by adding compensation voltages proportional to the voltage difference between upper and lower capacitors. Simulation results showing control performance of induction and permanent magnet motors demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

  • A new HBT current source model and the corresponding direct parameter extraction methods are presented. Exact analytical expressions for the current source model parameters are derived. This method is applied to scalable modeling of HBT, Some techniques to reduce redundancy of the parameters are introduced. The model based on this method can accurately predict the measured data for the change of ambient temperature, size, and bias.

  • The compression of video for both full HD and UHD requires the inclusion of extra vertical lines to every video frame, named as the DTV essential hidden area (DEHA), for the effective functioning of the MPEG-2/4/H encoder, stream, and decoder. However, while the encoding/decoding process is dependent on the DEHA, the DEHA is conventionally viewed as a redundancy in terms of channel utilization or storage efficiency. This paper proposes a block mode DEHA method to more effectively utilize the DEHA. Partitioning video block images and then evenly filling the representative DEHA macroblocks with the average DC coefficient of the active video macroblock can minimize the amount of DEHA data entering the compressed video stream. Theoretically, this process results in smaller DEHA data entering the video stream. Experimental testing of the proposed block mode DEHA method revealed a slight improvement in the quality of the active video. Outside of this technological improvement to video quality, the attractiveness of the proposed DEHA method is also heightened by the ease that it can be implemented with existing video encoders.

  • A kinematic control for redundant manipulators is consisdered. An efficient computation method is proposed to determine the joint variable solutions for a given Cartesian path of the end effector. In the proposed method, the Jacobian matrix and its pseudoinverse matrix are calculated intermittently only when the errors exceed the prescribed tolerance. Thereby, the computational burdens are greatly reduced, and at the same time, the errors are maintained within a tolerable range. To show the effectiveness of the mehtod, the result of the simulation is provided in which the redundancy of the manipulator is resolved to avoid the singularity.

  • Rapid progress in the modeling of biological structures and simulation of their development has occurred over the last few years. Cellular automata (CA) and Lindenmayer-system(L-system) are the representative models of development/morphogenesis of multicellular organism. L-system is applied to the visualization of biological plant. Also, CA are applied to the study of artificial life and to the construction of an artificial brain. To design the L-system and CA automatically, we make this model evolve. It is necessary to code the developmental rules for evolution. In this paper, we propose a DNA coding method for evolution the models of development/morphogenesis of biological multicellular organisms. DNA coding has the redundancy and overlapping of gene and is apt for the representation of the rule. In this paper, we propose the DNA coding method of CA and L-system.

  • A kinematic control method for the redundant robot manipulator is proposed, where redundancy is utilized to avoid the limit of joint positions and velocities. For the given tadk, the joint positions are obtained in such a way that each joint is placed as close to its center point as possible by considering the velocity limit. The robot is, therefore, controlled so that the joints move with the acceptable velocities and lie within the reachable ranges. To show the validities of the proposed method, two examples are illustrated by computer simulations for the RHINO-XR robot with sliding base.

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) adopts intra transform skip mode, in which a residual block is directly quantized in the pixel domain without transforming the block into the frequency domain. Intra transform skip mode provides a significant coding gain for screen content. However, when intra-prediction errors are not transformed, the errors are often correlated along the intra-prediction direction. This paper introduces a residual differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) method for the intra-predicted and transform-skipped blocks to remove redundancy. The proposed method performs pixel-by-pixel residual prediction along the intra-prediction direction to reduce the dynamic range of intra-prediction errors. Experimental results show that the transform skip mode's Bjøntegaard delta rate (BD-rate) is improved by 12.8% for vertically intra-predicted blocks. Overall, the proposed method shows an average 1.2% reduction in BD-rate, relative to HEVC, with negligible computational complexity.
